Is it possible to import one big mesh with multiple different textures UV mapped onto it?

Do you mean if Jonwil importer supports this? Should you work with MilkShape, I think this is not possible in MS.
I don't think it is possible in the importer either - you can assign 1 texture to multiple meshes, but not the other way round.

I know you can apply multiple textures to multiple meshes but I don’t see it being possible to make one mesh use multiple textures.

I have one big mesh in MS that uses many textures, all 256x256. It's easy to do, using groups. I just wondered if anyone had gotten something like this into the game, and how, before I went to the trouble of testing it myself.

If all your groups are seperate "objects" inside the mesh then in the importer you will be able to assign the different textures to them.

how do you make a part of a mesh a separate object?

I think if you only have one original object (a sphere, cylinder, etc) you can't. But if your item is made of different objects (e.g. a cylinder and a plane), each counts as a group. So, if you want to assign different textures to them, do not make the mistake and re-group them.
Each group will show up as a seperate mesh in the importer as well.

Bitturn will create separate meshes for each different texture used.

Simply look at the texture list of the new ASE file in bitturn- that will be the mesh order in the importer :D
