View Full Version : Why does Mean Streak have such a bad name?

I mean, like, everyone comes off of it complaining, saying it's rough, and people on this forum say that it's rough as well...in my opinion...it's one of the smoothest woodies I've ever ridden...and, I've rode the Texas Giant, which in my opinion, is already the roughest woodie, but becoming ROUGHER! The Mean Streak is 100% smoother, people come of complaining...but on Texas Giant, 100% rougher, people come of cheering...(and holding their necks)

Well, having been on a lot of wood coasters, I certainly wouldn't consider Mean Streak to be one of the smoothest, but I also think it isn't as rough as many people say.
I've been on plenty that are rougher, and plenty that are smoother. Beech Bend Park's Kentucky Rumbler, for example, is remarkably smooth.
I think part of it is that most of Cedar Point's coasters are much smoother than Mean Streak, hence making it look bad on direct comparison. But, that's just a guess.

I dont think it is rough at all, its too slow to be rough, I've heard that when they turnt the trims off it gives you a great, rough fast ride but on the downside they cant keep the trims off for long because it rattles the bolts out and it tears the ride apart so the trims are rarely ever off.

I wouldn't call 65mph slow.

I think Corkscrew at Alton Towers has the same problem. It's rough yes, and it's probably the roughest coaster there. However in comparison to some other coasters I've ridden (Gauntlet at Camelot is one that's definately rougher as is Big Dipper and Wild Mouse at Pleasure Beach Blackpool) it's not that bad. I certainly try to ride it once everytime I go, it's a fun coaster that generally has a short queue.

The Beastie at Alton Towers is rougher than that.

Thats far from the roughest woodie i've ridden (See The Villian @ Geauga Lake)
The thing is... its just not fun. Hardly any air, the trim brakes totally suck the fun outta the first drop, and honestly, its just a big waste of space for a better coaster.

Well, it is rough. And they made it super sucky because they trimmed the crap out of it.
THATS why it sucks.

I don't consider those hybrid woodies with the metal frames woodies at all. I hate Villain as well.
I have noticed that Mean Streak seems to be vastly improved this year, but then again, I haven't been since June, so it may be slowly declining through the summer again.

^ Hades?
Voyage?
Those are most def woodies.
With characteristics like woodies to back it up. Voyage is SO out of control.

That makes me want to ever ride Hades and Voyage less. Now I have little to live for.

I was there in June, and I thought it was parallelled with the Texas Giant...it seemed fast...but, yeah, I did noticed it was very trimmed...it seemed fast and smooth. And, that was my first time riding it, so...

I don't see alot of people getting off the ride complaining. Most people know it's gonna be fairly rough and take it for what it is. Mean Streak has grown on me through the years, and I always ride it several times during each visit.
That said, the trims do kinda ruin the first drop, they're so strong, you actually move forward in your seat while going down the hill. A unique experience I suppose...

I totally agree with you. I didnt always think that though because the first year I could ride the "big" coasters at CP the tallest and fastest one I rode was Mean Streak and I thought it was amazing but a few years went by and I progressed to better rides and now I think riding Mean Streak is just a waste of time, even though the coaster is 3:30 or something like that I really dont think there is anything to it, theres no airtime and not really too much speed, I agree that it is a waste of CP's space and money.

i will have to say son of beast is horribly rough as well as the beast but they are 2 of the best coasters around........the roughest woodie i have been on was at worlds of fun in kansas city....it is called timberwolf.

Wooden coasters should never be smooth. It removes the fun.

You got to remember that when you first rode it, it was fun. and now that your older you like bigger rides, well remember that there are ids out there who still think it's fun. so remember that next time you say it's a waste of space.:nono:

Haven't rode Patriot, but Mamba is BORING!!! After riding Magnum and Millenium, Mamba WAS BORING

You cant compare Mamba to Millennium Force, to me a lot of exciting coasters are boring when you campare them to Millennium Force so I dont do that, I try not to compare anything to it because to me nothing compares to the ride Millennium Force gives you.

To me, the smoothness is in how they are taken care of. To put it plain and simple, Cedar Fair needs to oil there tracks better!
Its something when you can hear Blue "Squek"'s trun around from the front gate.

Woodies are supposed to be rough, but what does roughness have to do with the Blue Streak squeaking around the turn? Sure, it could use some WD-40, but...

What I ment is take a look at how kw takes care of there woodies. No only do they oil the track, but this past year, when the Racer got just a little rough, the retraced that trun, and improved the ride quality.
I rember hearing this on one of the CP forums "Cedar Fair puts just enough into there woodies to keep them safe and nothing more"

It's true, but I like rough woodies...just my opinion I guess. I mean, most people don't like Texas Giant and Mean Streak because they're rough, but I do. But, I don't even notice Mean Streak being rough, so...

I enjoyd Mean Streak. I remembr leaving the Dave's BBQ by the Marina 2 get a ride at night on it. BTW:they recooked the food 4 us.
Mean Streak 2 me is underated. Just cuz it's rough dosent mean its not a fun ride! I liked Mean Streak alot.
I Like woodies 2, cuz they bring back the thrill of old times, and it also gives u the out of control experince. The first real smooth woodie I rode was Toro.

IMO, just b/c a wooden coaster is rough, dosen't make it a good woodie.. most people will say that's how a wooden coaster feels, but as snowspeeder said, take a look @ KW... I've been to Six Flags America, Kings Island, Cedar Point, and Busch Gardens Williamsburg, and out of all the parks, KW has the best coasters...
They have some old coasters (jackrabbit, racers), and they take care of their rides.. these rides could easily get rough, but they make sure they are in top notch.. a good wooden coaster isn't a rough ride like SOB, it's more smooth... sure it's always going to be a little shaky rolling through the track, and sure it has that unique feel from a steel coaster, but that feeling isn't always "rough and jerky".. though yeah.. i guess it's all in opinion..
BTW, how rough is Texas Giant.. i want to ride that sooo bad.. and since I "might" be moving to Arizona with a friend, well.. i'll be able to visit Six Flags texas :D

If you think KW has the best coasters outta what you listed... you must be on some serious drugs. Crack? Cocain? Acid?
KW is awesome and all, but not in the same league as CP, BGE,or PKI.

I never said "coasters" but their Wooden coasters are great...
and also, I never said they had the best... I listed them because they show a wooden coaster is not always rough... a good, well kept woodie should be less rough...
oh , and BTW.. my favorite actually is Beast.. my list of top wooden coasters is:
1. Beast
2. Thunderbolt
3. Son of Beast

I don't mean to be difficult, but, actually, it looks like you did say KW has the best coasters.
I like Kennywood, largely because of their old coasters and other unique old rides. However, I would rate Thunderbolt as among the roughest coasters I've ridden. (I really like Thunderbolt, and think it's the best coaster at Kennywood, but it definitely isn't smooth!) Note: It is definitely not THE roughest I've ridden -- I've ridden coasters that are far rougher than Thunderbolt, but it is rougher than most of the coasters I've ridden, and I've been on a LOT of coasters!
