My dad won't open the NAT for our network. He thinks that if he opens it for the 360 then people can hack onto our network. Is an "Open" NAT compromising the security of our network? Please Help!!

I believe on most routers (i know i can on mine) you can choose to open the ports for EVERYONE or you can leave them open on only one IP on the network

thus, his security is fine and you get to play your Xbox 360

another option is to tell him to utilize a software firewall on his computer and open the network up....

if he's worried about kids stealing his wireless bandwidth, tell him to go buy some Cat 5 and a real router and do a wired network :P

If you enable just the Upnp option on your router, you should be fine, the Upnp is similar to a dynamic nat, and simply creates inbound routes to match outbound routes that are initiated by your xbox. This means that the Xbox live port 3074 are only opened and routed to your xbox when your are playing online.

Simply enabling an option like this doesnt mean you are open to attack by any means, because ports are not opened until outbound connections are detected and initiated by a device on your home network.

the idea that you cant open up ports like this without making your whole network vulnerable is retarded, Your dad needs to get out his users manual for his router and do a little more reading.

You need an Open NAT for online with this game to be able to ride with your friends in the freeride mode. just enable the UPnP in the router, then you should have an open NAT in the xbox live dashboard

My belkin router includes both firewall protected connections and separate CAT5 connections for going around the firewall. So I just used one of those outside connections and my 360 works perfectly. No need to mess with NAT. My PC is behind the firewall so it's protected.

I have made changes to my NAT settings where it should allow outgoing and incoming 88/3074 traffic and the network test still says "Moderate".

I heard one suggestion about the Upnp changes, what do I need to do exactly?

A friend at work suggested that I "trick" the system by doing a "Connect To PC" using the router and he said that it cleared it up for him right away from "moderate" to "open". He said that he did everything in the book with NAT, but it only opened up when he initiated a PC connection test....hmmm didnt make any sense to me!

Any help would be appreciate! Thanks fellas!

idk.....apparently he doesnt care what people say about this. I told him that the computer would be fine behind a firewall and he still wont open the nat up for the xbox. anyone have any completely reliable web sites or links where i can find info i can show him that it is proven that opening up the nat on just the xbox will be fine?.........thanks.....i really need help......

If you have a D-Link ADSL Router you can drop the ip address of the 360 (if its made static) into the DMZ which will give a status of OPEN only for the 360.

Look for a DMZ setting in your router and enter an IP addresss. Make sure you set that same IP up for your Xbox.
