EDIT: 6/10/08 - download link fixed
**** Previously ****
Hi all! I've had a busy Sunday afternoon putting together this little set of Cafe tables. Well, actually, two so far. I have no idea what I will be adding to this set other than a few tables and chairs, maybe something like a desert trolley or something. Check out the pics of this one table so far:
The second table (not shown yet) is simply the same model with different flowers and the chairs are spaced a quarter turn around the table instead of opposite each other. The metal parts are recolorable (along with the seat cushon and napkin fold), but the light is not colorable. Making the light colorable causes the textures to become severly messed up, so I will leave it as is.

I'm interested in the details. Does it need to be a bench? How do you get them to twist (eg the left girl in the first pic)?

Yeah, I kow about peep points :p
I'm interested in the details. Does it need to be a bench? How do you get them to twist (eg the left girl in the first pic)?
Bench settings all around (First entry puts the scenery in the Path Extras menu, then you use the Bench setting in under Extra Parameters along with the other settings. Here is my SID file for it: Link (http://www.vodhin.net/CustomScenery/Vodhin/HowTo/VodhinsTableSets.sid)). Peeps rotate counter clockwise around their toes, so you have to kinda guess where the toes are (Half a MilkShape square is the length of their foot- but the legs are bent a bit).
The Bench setting triggers built in animation: When 2 peeps are on the same bench (the entire table/chairs set in this case) it makes them face one another and chat. Since you fixed the normals in your importer, I noticed that they now face each other instead of away- I'll have to go back and fix the ones in the Vermont set, cause they face away on those benches...
I wonder what kind of odd, twisted things I can do with that table. Are the chairs add ons, or are the tables and chairs one piece?
Hopefully some good stuff! Each piece has a table, two chairs, and the table settings as one piece. It attaches to the edge of a path as the regular benches do, but they are offset out of the path and there is enough room to plant all kinds of small goodies in the area- see below. I will be adding larger tables with separate chair sets, along with other goodies.
:haha:I like the first pic, I smell lesbos! LOL! Anyways this set looks freakin' awesome! Great Work you insane creator!:haha:
I'm not crazy... Just nuts! :noob:
Looks great so far. I'd love to see a host/hostess table if you don't mind. :bounce:

Bitter! How the heck are you! Thank you for all that you've given us, too! You've been a great innovator here and an inspiriation to all of us! I thank you! :D
And a big thanks to all for the compliments- it keeps me goin...
**Update**
Here's a couple of more shots, now including the 2nd table. The 2nd table is a little bit lower (I wanted to see if it looked better), has different flowers, and I lowered the backs of the chairs. Take a look:

All that's left for these table is a little adjustments to the peep placements and they're ready to get.

Here's the first download (http://www.vodhin.net/RCT3Community/download.php?view.347) :D Just the two tables for now. The peeps kinda sit in the right spots, but not as good as I'd like. Future updates will have them sitting correctly. These tables will stay without change, so it's safe to place in parks today. Please keep in mind this these are higher polygon objects (480 triangles and 536 triangles respectively) and might increase lag during gameplay.
These Cafe Tables will appear in the Path Extras menu (with all the other benches) and are recolorable. Enjoy!

Awesome--I can't believe you're already done with these! Question...approx. what is the poly count like on other objects? I don't know too much about the current custom scenery out there, so can you think of current objects that are around the same triangle count as these new tables? I'm curious how much lag I'll be adding specifically to my own park compared to what I already have in the park. Thanks for such awesome creations!!!
Vodhin
09-25-2006, 11:05 AM
There's really no way to tell. You could count the faced you can see and multiply by two (each fave is made of 2 triangles). If the object is optimized by removing unseen faces and using other tricks, then that becomes more difficult.
In this set- the table legs are only 8 triangles because I used4 2D planes with an image of the leg on them. I could have use only 2 but the "plane sandwich" is a nice trick to add some sense of depth (look at the wheels of a coaster sometime).
http://www.vodhin.net/CustomScenery/Vodhin/HowTo/Pic_Table1.JPG
The chair legs, however, needed to be 3D because I couldn't get a 2D plane to bend correctly and not distort the image. The legs are made from 3 sided cylinders, though, instead of 4 sided box tubes. Cylinders are the best piece to start from, especially if you leave the ends unclosed, since you have the most options available for shaping. Looking back, I realize I should have used a single 2D plane with transparent scetions for the chair backs... next time I will :D
**Edit** Peep rotations are better now, same download as above: Minor Update (http://www.vodhin.net/RCT3Community/download.php?view.347)

If you plan to expand this, can I request a table with a (larger) table clothing for an elegance restaurant and with upholstered seats, please? Also a counter with some cakes would be fine. And/or a shelf with some bottles of good wine.

It is as simple as making a light, only harder :noob: The main thing is to have the correct SID settings. Peep rotation is the other annoying issue- just when you think you know where the peep's axis is, another peep comes along and seems to have a completely different axis point. My latest study seems to point at the left toe as the most likely axis point. I wish I has a 'dummy' model for this purpose... hmmmm... I think I'll make one!
When I have more info of peep effect points, I'll put together some base files and a tutorial. Hope to see you around ;)
This Set is Awsome! Do you have any more ideas yet on what else will be in this set?
A few have been presented here that I like and I think I'll add 'cozy' booth style seating. I'd also like to figure out some of the other peep interaction scenery- I think I found a "kissing" spot. Not sure yet...

As for Alphas... well, I never listen, do I? Marnetmar and a host of other folks had suggested using the SIAlphaMask setting and, well, that's what works. Just erode your edges on the Alpha image and Dialate the edges of the main image (both about 5 to 10%).
Also- if you are using a solid color in your alpha object, you need only the Alpha to cut it out of a solid color tecture in the main- like a cookie cutter. That's how I made the Trellis set a while back and I've been pulling that trick ever since. Just be sure that your alpha texture and your main solid color are the same size.

I assume you mean the Gas Lamp, since the tables are already out for download... The gas lamps will be added to the download between 9/28-9/29.

[re:trellis set] Did you have fix it yet?
The gas lamp will be recolorable once I get the texture working. There will be wall and hanging/ceiling versions.
As for the trellis set... Yes, and no: I got the transparancy working as I want to, but I want to add to it and I will:
The Trellis Set will be discontinued! and the updated sections will move into the updated Cafe set. I have learned a lot in the past few months since I made the Trellis set and have found a better way to make the pieces. You can keep the trellis set in your current installations for your existing parks. The new pieces will not upset things- you will just end up with duplicate sections in two different lists. I wil not be updating the trellis set.
More to come :D

I can't wait for the new trellises and I hope they'll be available soon. The very last thing in Phase Four of Wonder World will be Southern Plantation Restaurant, and I'm hoping to use them.
But take your time. I can put of finishing Phase Four for as long as it takes. No big deal. My thread can just lie dormant until you release your trellises. That's okay. I can use another break. I can just sit back and take it easy. No hurry...
But don't blame me if the Wonder World "groupies" riot. :p

The new gas lamp is beautiful Vodhin! You mentioned the gas lamp will be recolorable--does that mean that the lamp ITSELF will be recolorable, or the light coming from the lamp? I'm really hoping that you managed to make the light from the gas lamp similar to the flickering orange glow effect of the torch lamps... *crossing fingers*

Vodhin,
Downloaded your CafeKit but didn't work at all. I tried re-booting my computer after installation but same thing happened. The file went to the right category but it shows no photo at all.
Anyway, I thank you (and luckygirl, usf geeks n' maretmar) for your ArchKit, Luckygirls Harbor set (except that the harbor light doesn't work in my RCT3/computer, maretmars leftoverz and USf geeks steps and stones, which were all downloaded from your site. They are all surely of great help esp. I'm new to these stuff and working on my first park. I work on my park while I'm doing my laundry and my boys and husband are all asleep. Great past time for a mom like me!

If you open the file, you'll see a folder and a word document. It's just that one folder that goes in the /themed section.
I think, Ive got Wild with Soakes expansion pack called RCT3 Gold.

Come to think of it... yes, you do need Wild or at least the latest updates (which gives you billboards and custom stalls and such). Why? I realise now that this set uses the SIAlphaDS which I don't think was available until Wild got programmed- It might be something else...
Make sure that your Themed directory has VodhinsCafeKit -exactly like that. In that folder should be the TableSets folder and the style.unique.ovl style.common.ovl files. Delete the readme file if it is there (it shouldn't cause problems, but who knows?). If you only see another folder for VodhinsCafeKit then it is installed incorrectly. Delete and try again.
Make sure that you have No ZIP files in any RCT3 directory. This will cause problems, too.
I will be updating this set soon enough, probably by this weekend....

that is fantastic. I'd change that marble texture though, it doesn't look good when tiled. Small detail, it would be great it you could come up with a very simple spoon model, and lob 1 or 2 in the dishes. Perhaps also hanging them up on the end of the wooden lighting? I'm also hoping you'll make a few plate models, perhaps a stack of like 20 plates, so we can put them on a table nearby?

***Important ***
The pre-release Small Tables have changed- the new versions will not automatically appear in your existing parks!
I'm using a new technique for making the Cafe Set pieces that will (hopefully) decrease lag, but may also make the set incompatible with earlier versions of RCT3. If you haven't updated your RCT3 with the latest patches then this set may not work.
Asside from using double sided Alphas and Opaques, I'm relying heavily on using texture OVL files- instead of each piece having it's own texture set, these pieces get their texture patterns from a master file. From what I understand, this may make a little lag when placing the first piece of a subset (like the Buffet sections), but the rest should place normally and there should be less resources needed to draw each one.
So far, I have not witnessed any more drop in frame rate if I place one or fifty New Small Tables- as opposed to a noticable drop (down by 18 FPS) when placing as many of the old tables and chairs.
Between this new optimized scenery design and plans for other pieces in the set, I realized that I needed to alter the existing tables- enough so that that the old tables had to go by-by... But on the bright side, the silverware on the new tables is nice and shiny now :D
More To Come...
Belgabor
10-05-2006, 11:40 PM
When I told you about the lag I was referring to a 12 Mb texture ovl that contains 10 1024x1024 textures =)
Iirc my snowset has only a litte lag beyond the normal if any more at all (1.5 Mb texture ovl with 6 512x512 textures).

I think that with great scenery like this, we are going to start seeing
less amusement parks and more village or street scenes.
I am kind of getting tired of the same old rides and I am starting to get into
more detailed scenes like a recreation of a small village or even a nice street
scene with resturants and shops.
That is until Vodhin figures out animation and we get new rides.
Its just my opinion, I may be wrong.

Don't know it I will make it peep friendly- I have a few ideas, though. There are 11 meshes with 11 textures- three of those textures have 16 images on each one for the food items and other goodies (oh, an one more with the alpha masks I need). It turns out that MilkShape has a very powerfull and easy to use texture coordiante tool built in, and several plugins that can also tile map the object just by giving it XYZ repeat n times figures- very usefull for keeping an even flow of textures across multiple scenery pieces.
The Soda Machine made it into the game, BTW, but not without one little problem- the whole thing ended up backwards:

If you use MS and convert from ms3d in biturn, probably the latter is to blame.
Vodhin
10-10-2006, 05:18 PM
If you use MS and convert from ms3d in biturn, probably the latter is to blame.
I doubt it: If I do my own rotate in MS (the text is still correct), then go to biturn (the text is still correct) and use your importer- the text come out incorrect... been that way since day one.
But I have a feeling that RCT3 just draws X negative- It's an easy fix: I can just select the whole model and morror left/right and it solves the problem...
Good News everyone! I have figured out how to take a full, 16 million color image and convert it to the second and third color indexes for RCT3- that means that the base counter and the counter top will be recolorable and look beautiful!
This has been a bain for me as I use Pain(t) Shop Pro- a really good program, but lacking the ability to reindex the pixel maps. The results are looking really really good!
For all you Paint Shop Pro users, here's how to get color 2: it's just a matter of clicking "Image" then "Arithmatic" and follow these steps:
Make sure image 1 and image 2 are the same picture
Click Subtract
Image 1 should be Reds, Image 2 should be Blues
Divisor = 3, Bias = 86
Clip Values should be checked
The finished result will be an 256 color "gray scale" image with the primary components of the image remaining (technically combining Reds and Blues to make what would be green in a true rgb map).
Now that the image's pixels are all mapped to palette index between 86 and 170, the image will behave in RCT3 as the second color in a two color choice. All that's left to do is reorder the palette by luminence (will be brighter to darker). This may make a 'negative' version of your image- if it does, then redo the steps, but convert the image to a negative image first.
I haven't tried the third color yet, but I bet I can do it by setting the bias to 171.
More To Come :D

Well, I hope the next version will fix all of this. I have a suspicion why you get these results. Create a simple object that indicates the axises (or use the one I asked you to map) and DO NOT ROTATE it. Look at it in MS and in biturn, they should be mirrored (and the axises remapped).

Dear Sir/Madam,
I am writing regarding the development of RCT4. In course of my membership on your forum, I was able to see the progress of the custom scenery maker Vodhin. Not only is his work absolutely outstanding for a layman, but it also exceeds standards for professional scenery developers.
Due to his profond connections with the RCT community, he can furthermore provide a deep insight into the actual wishes and requirements of the community, hence your customers. Considering this, he would also be a valuable employee in regards to marketing and advertisement strategies.
He is currently working in sales, but should you make an appropriate offer, he would certainly consider a change of occupation.
Should you require further recommandations, please do not hesitate to contact either the community or myself.
I am looking forward to hear from you.

I can think of two solutions Voh... either invert the textures before you export, or try applying the texture mapping to the OTHER side of the model. Go ahead and have it backwards in ms and see if it comes out right 'in the end'?

Pure understatement ... you've created a new counter, right? With somethin like a coffee-machine and a teabag-case. Those ceiling-parts are awesome too.

Where's the X-Ray effect!?! I love that pic from the window.
The X-Ray effect is there- some color combinations work better than others to cancel it out...
...How much long[er] will it be till you release this master piece?
Hopefully soon ;)
Did the new set includes both table-types? One with the long table cloth (for use inside cafe's or restaurants) and the bistro-table (for street-cafe's)?...
The table cloths fit over the existing tables... New, larger tables will eventually be added into the set and these will have table cloths built in and also have separate, 'extra' working chairs ;)
...Too bad it's not going to be in my parks, my computer won't handle this piece of art...
It should, and without too many problems- my new method of building scenery pieces keeps the facet count really low and details high- the most complex piece (yet) is the full Buffet Bar and it is only 595 triangles and is mostly welded verticies. The other pieces have about an average of 300...
The iggest thing about this set is the new texture OVLs- Instead of each model storing its own textures, these models refer to a single file- this keeps the resources lower. It also causes a brief (less than a second) pause when you first hover over the icon for one of the pieces in a group. after it has read the texture data, it and the others in the group load normally.
I have no idea if this new seperate texture file process actually improves the performance of the game, but I'm hoping it will....

Its official, Your ten times better then shyguy, especially since he dosent do requests
Both are masters of CS. None is better than the other. Both make different scenery and the fact, that one request a piece from the other says nothing about who's better.
Why should Shyguy not ask ... or why shouldn't Vodhin ask Shyguy for a scenery piece. I think, both are in position to request somethin' from the other with a little difference to any other here. They will get their requested pieces.
Imagine what could happened, when both (together with some other of the high talented CS-Designers here) work together on a Custom Scenery-Pack.

*** Update ***
Well, it's been an interesting day indeed! First off, I have got all the Buffet Bar pieces in game and seeming aligned the way I want them to be, and I stumbled across a new trick that gives me perfect Alpha transparencies- No X-Ray Effect! :D
This major hurdle was keeping me from creating the type of scenery I have allways wanted in RCT3, and now that I got it figured out, you'll see lots of new pieces that use this technique! Take a look at the new Iron Trellis Wall and Iron Fencing sections that will be included in the Cafe Kit:
http://www.vodhin.net/CustomScenery/Vodhin/CafeKit/Pic19.JPG
Draw distance and steep angles of view yield prommising results- and no X-Ray effect in sight. I must say that these images were resized and some of the detail has been lost- but not to worry- they look a lot better in game! Take a look at some night shots:
http://www.vodhin.net/CustomScenery/Vodhin/CafeKit/Pic20.JPG
http://www.vodhin.net/CustomScenery/Vodhin/CafeKit/Pic21.JPG
Everything is working just right, and the level of detail n the texture did not suffer a little photo-shop resizing to make smaller texture files - these two that I'm using in the Trellis pieces were over 1MB each, now they're less than a quarter of that and look ten times better!
Well, that's all for today-
More To Come :D

I think I've nailed down the Alpha thingy- there's still a little bit of experiments to do, but I now have them fully recolorable (and that process led to yet another discovery- I'll post that once I have confirmed it). Here's the trellis set now fully recolorable:
http://www.vodhin.net/CustomScenery/Vodhin/CafeKit/Pic22.JPG
This should make ShyGuy very happy, and many others too! If my guess is right, that little discovery I think I made while working on making thiese recolorable will lead to perfect glass, too...
Thanks for all your compliments and encouragement!

Vodhin, you just keep amazing me, and your latest set is of such high quality (detail, colours, alpha) - it honestly looks better than actual in-game scenery
How did you get the recoulerable option for the trollis? I thought this might not work, as th iron has different colours?
Also, is there a quick way of getting an alpha texture for a texture, which includes several colours?
Vodhin
10-15-2006, 11:12 AM
I will be adding other iron work pieces now that I have the road to a sucessful creation in place. I have invited some folks here and there to try out stuff so I know ahead of time if there are any problems (other then the fact I have yet to make icons for most of the pieces).
LG- you can take a full color image and make it recolorable. Here's the basics: you need to take the image and spilt the colors into their three primary colors- RGB through a subtraction process (make a new image out of each color). these will end up as grayscale negative images of each component (lighter will be darker, darker will be lighter).
You then need to recombine these into a single image with the final having it's colors decreased to 77 colors and offeset the index by 8 - you will end up with a photo that is made up of the entire colors of the original but with a palette of only the first 85 colors in a 256 color palette and it will be re-colorable with the first choice in game. If you offest by 86, it will be the second set, 171 the third (and you would decrease colors to 85, not 77 for the second and third index tiers).
Now, most photo palettes are sorted positively- from dark to light, the RCT3 palette is negative and will automatically have your light and dark in the correct shading order (I believe that they used this process so they could use full color images without loss). It's also why the palette is that garish Cyan, Magenta, and Yellow- they are the negatives of Red, Green, and Blue.
The first 8 colors in each color set don't seem to change and are not affected by color choice or lightness/darkenss (hence why some of the colors I used above have odd lighting shades). I think these first colors are meant to allow non changing colors to exist (blacks and whites, for example) and might also allow for special effects- transparancies, for example. Experiments continue.
Well, off to work I go- real work.
More To Come :D

...how hard would it be to add an end peice with a default cash regester and vendor?
That's what I started doing, but realized that buffet bars usually do not have a check out- instead there is place where peeps pay first (or later). So I started making custom covers for the custom stalls-
http://www.vodhin.net/CustomScenery/Vodhin/CafeKit/Pic25.JPG
They are in matching textures and more pieces will be added to make the 'Deli' set that will all work together. There's even an intersection piece that allows the buffet pieces to connect to these... I will if I can add some kind of effect to hopefully make the peeps stop at the various pieces- but don't hold your breath... A vista point might be the best option, though your peep groups wil constantly take photos in front of these if you have that option. That could get old real fast. Probably use a passport machine or something.
can we expect them soon. im refurbing a resturaunt a REALLY need them. its ok if not though
Hopefully this week... Gotta do a few more adjustments/tests...
