Now I'm pretty sure that nobody had swimming or jumping on their wishlists for D:PL, and with good reason- there's no reason they'd be taken out, right? But as we've seen with those and the film director, we can't take anything for granted.

So I want to hear from all of you- what were the little things, the little easily overlooked touches from the old Driver games that you really liked. I'm not talking about new ideas you have. I'm talking the features that are either currently in driver or once were, but aren't anymore.

And it doesn't even have to be Driver games. Any games. Mix and Match little features from any open world game and tell us why you'd like to see them all together. Here's an example.

Driver 1- the hubcaps flying off was great- just waiting to see them fly off was like a game in itself

Driv3r- having a road layed out like a circular maze in Nice was really cool. the jump in the middle was a great reward, too.

GTA3- The way you close your driver side door if you let go of all controls. Made me wonder why no other game's driver bothered closing the door too.

Mafia- a menu to replay every single completed mission from.

There's a few examples. What are ones you all liked?

I also enjoyed the hubcaps too, just 'cause it added some realism. I also enjoyed the small mountain roads in D3

Yeah, we probably shouldn't take anything for granted, so I'd like to see the following return in D5:

1. Speedometer
2. On foot
3. Tons of traffic in DPL (adjustable option)
4. Day/night cycle.
5. Tanner. (TK 2006 was cool though)
6. Four car road blocks from Driver 1 and 2.
7. Driver 1 style director mode.
8. 70's to 00's style vehicles, all in one era, like in DPL 2006.
9. Sportbikes, boats.
10. Climbing ladders, swimming, rolling, jumping, etc.
11. Interiors, like the Driv3r Mall.
12. DPL's speed and thrill camera, but zoomed a little farther out this time.
13. Guns, but the cops will on shoot on foot, not while driving.
14. More parking garages, tunnels, bridges, winding roads, etc.

From Midnight Club 3, tons of customizable options like Traffic count, pedestrians on/off, time of day, weather, onscreen display meters on/off, special effects on/off.

From Project Gotham Racing 360 and Test Drive Unlimited, the interior dash views.

Definetly one of my favorite little touches to driver is the door physics. In driver 3 when your door would fly open and you threw it in reverse, if your door hit anything it would bust off. Now that is sweet. I remember a cop hitting my door making it loose, then i backed up to get away from the cop. Of course, the wind kept the door wide open and another cop sideswiped me and took my door clean off. Now that is what i call cool. In D:PL this feature was buggy at best. The doors were still "solid" unlike gta, but in dpl they are like brick walls. If a pedestrian opens their door you could be going 100mph and hit the door and the car would react like you hit a building and the door would remain perfectly intact. Totally lame.

actually Driv3r had the same annoying door vs car collision that D:PL had. Here's something I once said about it in another thread-

"Wouldn't it be better if you just say the grind my gears once, and then dot point all your gripes? Like this?

"You Know What Really Grinds My Gears"? -these two things from D3 and D:PL

1. The way that pedestrians get out of their cars whenever a gun is just pulled out. After a firefight all you want to do is get out of there fast, but you can't as the road is full of abandoned cars.

2. The physics attached to car doors when said pedestrians leave their cars. You're weaving down the road, and all is well. Suddenly some stupid idiot spots your gun and decides the best and safest course of action for them is to get out of their car and stand RIGHT IN THE PATH OF YOUR CAR! You've already calculated your driving line to swoop neatly past the car, so when the door opens it's already too late to avoid it. Your car hits their door, and then the dumbest, most inane thing of all happens.

When you hit the door, you don't drive through it like in an arcade game, you dont wrench it off or slam it shut like in a realistic game...instead you hit it and the door adopts the bulk and mass of the entire car, and refuses to swing on its hinges. So while you're only hitting a thin metal door, your car comes to a sickening halt as if it's just T boned the car in the engine.

When I played GTA I used to wish I could knock pedestrians down with an open door. If this is the kind of price that comes with collision detecting doors, then I'd much rather GTA's system. In other words, KEEP THE DAMN CITIZENS IN THEIR CARS!"

Though it was fun to collect people with the doors. If the next driver could somehow get the doors to be affected by people and posts, but not cars, it could be much less of a headache.

And as fun as a FPS is with mouse and keyboard, driving is more fun with a joypad, and I sure ain't going to play a driver that makes you switch from one to the other every time you enter/exit a car. Bring on the Perfect Dark/Timesplitters controls on the gamepad any day.

good points brok, those car doors annoyed me too!

that's the exact same thing i said but it DOES NOT happen in driver 3, at least not that i remember. Man dpl sucks.

Good suggestion, those doors should break off or shut on impact, affecting the pedestrians in the way.

It happens all-the-time in D3- far more than it does in D:PL. I lost count of how many mission attempts were ruined because of that. Note that it usually happens if you have a gun wielding passenger, but if cops are firing at you then it also usually happens.

Back on topic- Another little touch I've always liked in Driver games is the way the headlights and brakelights have that particular way they glow. No other game does it quite the same- try rotating the camera around a car at night in one of the games to see what I mean. They sort of stay lit in the one place for a tiny amount of time after the actual light moves away. Looks great.

I guess it's just a small portion of the other things that make Driver different and a good franchise to come across.

can't believe I forgot to mention D1's Film Director. The rest of the gaming world STILL hasn't caught up with this concept yet!

But the simulator world has. +10 years ago.
Look at the simulators from Papyrus.

Yeh, Driver 1 had a great film director, in some games i wished they had a film director like it, expecially Burnout where you have all those great crashes and in Burnout they automaticly make camera angles and there very crappy in the replays and you can't even save them :S

Another thing I really liked about the early drivers was the crates and stuff in alleys- when you hit them it doesn't damage the car or alter it's course like it does in GTA, and they all flew neatly over the car and landed behind just like they do in the movie chases. In D:PL it's a joke- most of the stuff you hit in alleys flies out of the end of the alley before you get there. It was a bit weird in the earlier ones the way they just sank through the ground but it was still better than D:PL's system.

Did anyone else like the crates more in the earlier ones or was it just me?

The picket fences in Driver 1 where nice. In DRIV3R they come out in segments when you crashed into em. In Driver 1 they came out in tinyier pices making them look more realistic.

I like the ones in DPL in Englewood, New Jersey, but there were something about them that could have been worked on and I think they would be great.

not to mention the great paper hitting like noise with the D1 fences. It's bizarre- it sounds nothing like splitting wood, but maybe such a fragile sound works well with something like that being smashed with a heavy car.

Another small touch with all Drivers except PL- even when the car is seriously damaged, at high speed the smoke doesn't show up, which is good because the last thing you want is smoke obscuring your view like it does in D:PL. Stupid, stupid, stupid, PL.
