View Full Version : COMBAT MODES DON"T WORK! (and other AI problems)

Has anyone else had this problem? I try to set a combat mode, and it either won't turn on, or they turn it off at will. I have the characters set not to change combat modes in the behavior section, but they DO IT ANYWAY (usually things like switching Defensive Casting off right before casting a spell when surrounded.) I don't expect them to be very intelligent, but it would be nice if they didn't refuse my orders.
Also, certain characters don't follow. If I have Qara in my party I have to have her lead, b/c she won't follow anyone. Is this supposed to be her character being stubborn and independent, or are things just messed up?
Also, does anyone know why characters say they can't reach a target when there is a clear, easy path to it? I can move them to the target manually with nothing else moving, but sometimes on their own they can't figure it out.

If anyone has had these problems or has a solution, please let me know. This would be a really good game if it didn't make me want to scream at the AI defects..........
Any help would be appreciated

So would a patch.........

... yep, I've had that too. Especially the combat modes thing. *sigh* True greatness of game, dimished by technical flaws. Again.

The AI has defects?

The scripted Expert System does not come close to having enough knowledge of any of the weapons, spells, and feats of any creature to be called an AI!

Obsidian need to hire Even, at least he is working on the none existant AI.

There's a 4.9 GB patch?!? That's insane! Although if it fixes the AI, I guess it's worth it.
Do you know when it will be released (approximately) and exactly what it is supposed to fix? If it's soon, I may just play something else in the meantime, b/c I can't take another day of my characters suiciding themselves.
Anything you know about the patch (particularly any links to official info in case there are changes) would be much appreciated.....
Thanks

It was humour. 4.9 GB is the approximate size of a DVD. What the guy meant, was that EVERYTHING has to be redone.

When your party members are controlled by AI, they will attempt to change their behavior based on settings in the Behavior tab. To keep them from changing Combat Modes, you could try turning Combat Mode Usage off.

If you don't ever want them to change their behavior on their own, try turning on Puppet Mode in the Behavior tab.

I already said in my original post that I had turned combat mode usage off. That was the first thing I tried, and IT DOES NOT DO WHAT IT IS SUPPOSED TO. I just tried puppet mode, and it STILL will not let me control combat modes! I just want combat mode usage to actually have some effect on how they behave, b/c right now, they ignore its settings completely. I can't even turn defensive casting on most of the time, and when I do, they turn it off whenever they feel like it, even with puppet mode on and combat mode usage off!
At this point, the game is almost unplayable. If I get into an area where I can't rest, I'm doomed, since my characters are practically suicidal. Someone Help Me!

Also, is there any way to fix the other problems? (some characters don't follow the leader, and sometimes they can't see an obvious path to a target)

Seriously?

I take it you have not played the game at all then!
Sorry but you really do need to install a retail copy of the game (if it will let you - with SecuROM), then play it as a caster (if it will let you - with SecuROM), then turn on Defensive casting, then switch to another party member and watch the emote "Defensive casting turned off" scroll up the screen. Do the same and switch to a casting class member of your party and then switch back to your main and watch the emote "Defensive casting turned off" scroll up the screen!

While it's nice to see someone reply, it would be nicer if they demonstrated the slightest knowledge of the product they are commenting on!

Forget telling customers how to play the game, when you do not have a clue, and find out about the issues and get someone that can fix them to do so!
In the case of the modes, it isn't just Defensive casting, but almost all of the modes, it is just that 'Defensive Casting' and 'flurry of Blows' make a huge difference to those classes that have them! A simple fix would be a global check, did the user select a mode and is abuse modes on, if NO, never ever ever ever change it!

The PR guy may now return to his hole! No matter how you spin it, it's broke!

Yes, I have that problem too.
But I care less.

The mode I use the most is Hide mode, and have no problem with it so far.

It really bugs me when it comes to Qara. She casts her first Fireball, so every single enemy rushes on her. She then casts another fireball, centered on her, :beta:with lots of AoO all around her.

If she survives the gangrape, everybody else is dead. But I'm not sure that's how the Defensive Casting was meant to be.

With Power Attack, they seem to keep it a little longer. But could still be better.

I havn't tried the other "subtle" modes, like parry or tracking. I'm not a subtle RPG player.

The AI mod helped a lot with this, but I makes my game crash, so I can't play with it.

.. other than to use "Normal Rules" as opossed to "D&D Hardcore" when having users of damaging AoE affects. Otherwise, it's just too finicky.
