ok someone suggested this. And I am gonna try to oblige. Here's what I'm working on, a bowling alley. This set will include:
- pins
- bowling ball
- bowling bag
- bowling lane
- bowling shoes
- bowling return
- score monitor
- lane banners
here are two pics to show my progress so far. What do you think? My only real obstacle right now is texturing the alley.

How many polys is this looks like they have a lot.
Dkimber1974
01-16-2007, 01:03 AM
nope. Not a lot of polys. :) The pins have about 800 and the alley has 165. I can try to lower the number in the pins by even more. Maybe if i dont use meshsmoothing.

OK your pins are a little strange. The thinnest part of the pin is supposed to be where the red stripes are. The tops of the pins are a little to fat. The lane looks good though. Are you releasing pieces with the arrows and the dots that you stand on for the approach?
Dkimber1974

Ya as soon as I can figure out how. I'm thinking of maybe putting them on a path cover. but at this point i'm not sure how I'm gonna do it.

Have you ever used UV mapper? I've tested it once when I started to make CS and immediately threw it away. It didn't look like it's capable to do better than MS...

Seems a bit short to me. According to wikipedia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ten-pin_bowling) it should be 60 feet long and around 40 inches wide.

You should also make bumpers like the ones for littler kids.
Dkimber1974
01-16-2007, 07:44 PM
Belgabor - I will make it longer. That was just my test lane to see if i could get it to texture right. I havent put it in the game yet. I want to see exactly what it looks like in game before I do anything else. Cause that will tell whether I continue. I've realized that this is a bigger task than i thought it would be. The ball return is a real pain. lol

The lane crashes the game when i put it in, so I'm thinking I may just make the lane into path covers. The only problem with that is the gutters. Does anyone have any suggestions on what to do about the gutters?
Jonnyears
01-17-2007, 05:14 PM
You could try it as 2 pieces,
Use the path covers for the main alley and then
make a couple of half- tube pieces for the gutters
So then we can build the actual bowling alley ourselves,
Sorry if you don't know what i'm on about!

I managed to find the problem with my model. It was too large. Now it works. Thanks to Belgabor for pointing that out. :D I also made a piece that connects to the other piece so that it will make the lane longer. Vodhin made the pins from alpha channels, but they dont look right to me close up so I shall see if I can make new ones that are a little higher in polygon count to put in the set as well as Vodhin's. That way you will have a choice. Here's what I have so far.

ok here's some more. Path covers for the lanes. And separate gutters. The path covers can be raised to go above the gutters. The pins are new too, but i still need to fix the texture on them. For some reason when they are in Milkshape they do one thing, and in the game they do another. There are only 200 faces per pin, which i know is a lot when you put ten pins down, so I am leaving Vodhin's alpha pins in the set. Thanks Vodhin. I still have no clue how you did it though. :haha: I read through the alpha and the LODS tutorials and I'm still rather confused. Oh well, such is life. Anyways, here's a pic of the new lanes.

The pins in the last pic looks too big to me. The are nearly so high as a peep. The ones, that Vodhin has made for you looks more realistic in their size.
You could make a large pin that was hit by a bowling-ball as a larger statue, that we could place on top of a building or in front of a bowling-building, like this:
http://63.210.199.180/design/GrandSlam/sports/spg599.jpg.fpx?qlt=80&wid=322.&cvt=jpeg
It's just an idea, but that's what I miss in a lot of sets, some larger objects, that you can use as statue and to show your peeps what they will find inside the buildings.

This set is coming along real nice., are you going to include the rest of the bowling alley interior.... shoe hire, ball returns, bar area, food area etc, or are you just goning to do the lanes. what abot teaming up with yesnt and combine his arcade set and your bowling set into a major wet weather indoor complex set?

That would be great! The problem is that joint

nice though

I don't think the bowling pins need to be unwelded, but it looks like their normals are upside-down/backwards. This happens to me if I model stuff "inside" the axis grid in MilkShape and use the default fix matrix in the importer. To fix, you can try moving the models outside the axix lines in MilkShape, then re-map the texture and move them where ever you need to put them.
Looks like a great set :D
Belgabor

Looks like MS does some creative normal mangling :p
I don't think the pins should be unwelded, maybe the bottom, but you could rather remove that if you didn't already.
Isn't there a way to display the normals in MS so you can control whether they point outward?
Dkimber1974
01-18-2007, 07:07 PM
not sure in Milkshape. I actually modeled the pins in 3ds max and then sized them and textured them in Milkshape. Maybe I should just try going straight from 3ds max.
Here's a pic of the pins and the statue. You can see that something is off on them. I think it might be the normals, but i dont know how to change it in Milkshape. In 3ds max there is a flip normals setting.

Regarding the pins, in Blender there is an option to recalculate the normals, maybe 3dsmax has also such an option. Also 3dsmax probably has an option to show the normals, so have a look if anything is strange.
Could also be that the pins are unwelded at the visible borders, although I don't know how that could have happened.

I think the ball return could use some edges (as ridelovers pic indicates)...
And one other thing... Is it possible for you to make some variations of the pins, where some have been knocked down for instance? I think that would greatly enhance the illusion of a real bowling alley...

It wouldn't be extremely hard to make the stools "sittable", but that implies placability limits as benches can only be placed next to a path.

It wouldn't be extremely hard to make the stools "sittable", but that implies placability limits as benches can only be placed next to a path.
Not entirely true. you can make them so as to not be next to a path. The situation is that peeps need to find the bench, and if the "point of origin" (center in the modeler) is not placed on an existing path, then the peeps do not know about it, since their AI seeks out only things attached to the paths.
This can be overcome by moving the seats off of the origin as far as you like, but there is a pitfall (or peep pall, if you will) the peeps react to their current position relative to the effect point- when they get up, if the effect point is not on the path, then the AI will make them seek the nearest path, usually in the direction the peep is facing. Some folks have reported drowned peeps (and I've confirmed this) with the pavilions I made for the Vermont set, where peeps sit on a bench that might overlook a body of water. The peeps get up and commit suicide- walking over the edge instead of back to the path behind them.
To make these seats peep friendly, I'll gladly help you along. The general rules are that the item mist have peep1 and peep2 effect points, and the SID needs to have Extra Parameter set to Bench. Path Edge Inner (or outter) also needs to be set, to ensure that the the item is placed on a path. If you choose path edge inner, you will need to offest the object by -0.80 (that placing moved the object off origin that amount) or +0.20 if you choose Path Edge Outter.
Peep rotations. You will need to set up the peep effect points, first adding the X/Z coordinates (Y will depend on how high the seat is, and peeps vary in their actual animation when sitting). After adding the X/Y/Z coordinates, then you will need to add a Rotate Y to the stack matrix, and you can use this Compass (http://www.vodhin.net/RCT3Community/download.php?view.357) to determing the correct rotation- this model is just for merging with your existing seats and should not be imported. The link will take you to detailed instructions on using it.
I hope this helps, and I know you can do it :D

Belgabor - Thanks for telling me about that hole in my ball return. I didnt even notice it till you pointed it out. It's all fixed now. The only problem I am having now is the path covers that I turned into the bowling lanes seem to have gone corrupt. Nice layout, by the way.

Rideslover - I will see what I can do about the box (making it bigger) but as far as the rails being painted on, I cant get the texture to do it right, so you are stuck without the rails. Sorry.
Edit: Here is another pic of the new ball return.

Vodhin - I read the tutorial on effect points and I have no clue what it is talking about.
It has that effect... your modeler program probably has some data read out in the status bar at the bottom of the window, and if you point your mouse pointer to where theeffect point should be (where the peep's feet would be) it should give you the X/Y/Z coordinates needed. The new version of the importer (v14 and up) now has all that matrix stuff built in and automated, (thank you Belgabor) so it is a lot easier to set up now. Tell me what you don't understand...

I think the stools should be a bit closer to the table IMO

The peeps sit now!!! Yay! At least the first 3 seats are aligned correctly. I cant tell on the 4th because none of the peeps seem to want to sit in it so I can test it. I also finished the ball return and made some kiddie bumpers to put in the gutters. The only problem I am having now is that I have to redo the rest of the theme because the other one seemed to be crashing before I could even get to the main menu. So wish me luck in getting everything into the theme file. Other than that, the set should be finished soon. I have to take my computer in tomorrow to get a new memory stick in so I wont be on for a couple of days, but after that everything should go smoothly.

Great job on the peep effect points- I should point out that built into the code of the game is that benches will attract no more than 2 peeps per bench- as far as I've ever been able to see, at least- so if you have one object with 4 seats and 4 peep effect points, either the game is randomly selecting effect points, or perhaps there is room for three. I've never tried 3- only 2, 4, 6 etc... The easiest way to make the fourth seat work, if it is a max of three, would be to make the stools in groups of two (see the chairs for my medium or large sized tables in the cafe kit).

OK I have everything done but the effect points on the round chair. Her is a pic of how it works all together.

Alright everyone. The bowling alley theme has been released at
www.rctrevalutions.com in the downloads section under dkimber's playworld.
It will remain exclusive to RCT Revalutions for two weeks. Then I will release it elsewhere. A little perk to our members. :)

It's RCT-Revalation ... this site is well-known for their restrictions to their users and artists (exclusive rights only)

Then Why even post the cs here if you cant download it here... seems like that would be against the rules , either way congratz on the great set dkimber , looks great.

Read rules for a change and you would answer you own question, instead people post saying i cant do this, why? Read the dang Forum Rules and you will see why not.

I hate sites, where the admins mean they have exclusive rights for the content, that their members create. the only persons who had the exclusive rights for their stuff are the artists and NOT the admins. But as Jonnyears means ... wait two weks and you can get it anywhere else.

Spanky, your really close to being put in your place, if you look Dkimber is Admin, so drop it.
Dkimber1974
01-21-2007, 07:15 PM
Ok. To straighten people out here. I am part of admin at RCT Revalutions, and I do have some say in this. So dont blame the owners. It is partly my decision as well to keep them exclusive for 2 weeks. I think it is a fair amount of time for our members to get them first. I am a designer at RCT Revalutions and all the other designers work is totally exclusive to the site. Now it just happens that I am the only designer that does RCT3 stuff, but most other RCT2 sites require registration first. And since the site started out as an RCT2 site, that is the way things are run.
Now as far as our hosted designers are concerned, all of their stuff can be downloaded without registering.

if you ever update and make some changes in this set again, i have a few ideas.
1. Your set is great! but it needs one of those ball catcher things at the end. also including one of those bars that pull the pins in the back.
2. It would be great if you could get peeps sitting in the round seats!
3. The pins are missing the red stripes :/
4. Make the pins separate pieces, and if possible see if you can get the single pin as a piece. so you can place each one by one. that way it would be easy to put in some pins that have fallen over.
5. A bowling ball rack would be neat.
6. If possible, maybe a bowling themed pizza shack.
7. If it doesn't take up too many polygons, maybe add some plates on the tables. some with pizza on it and some with greasy pizza crumbs on it.
8. This is just an idea for using this set, but you could use the arcade set and make an arcade room! :)

I have a stupid question. After reading through all the posts on this thread and downloading it, (I haven't actually installed it yet) I was just wondering. Is this eye candy? Or do the peep really bowl. I doubt it, but was just curious.

Its CS in RCT3 not the Sims. You can't make animation then import it into the game. Its just Scenery.

you have to post at least 5 times to begin downloading then at least one post in between downloading sets.
It's to show the makers some thanks I guess.
Just say you like the set in between each download...

I have absolutely no problem acknowledging the fine work and time put in by the very talented creators of these custom sets, what I object to is having to make five vacuuous posts about diddley-squat just to play the numbers....
