Silverfall and Vista 64 Bit

Hey all,

Wondering if anyone else has tried to run the silverfall demo on vista (Ultimate) 64-bit?

I can install the demo, with out a problem, but when I try to run it I get an error message.

"Insufficient Privileges: you must be administrator when you run this application for the first time"

I have checked everything I can think of to fix it but with no luck.

Any help would be appreciated.

And yes i do have admin rights on my computer....before you ask.

That's strange. Don't know how the English demo installer works, but has it already installed PhysX on your computer? If not it might be that, then try to install it manually.

Actually, I have tried to install the PhysX manually. But it made no difference, vista by default doesn't have the PhysX software installed of course, so I tried to install manually after I could not get the demo to work. Thought that there may have been a vista update for PhysX but its already vista compatible apparently.

Was hoping someone would have vista installed, and be able to let me know if its just my install or 64-bit version or Ultimate. But I guess not many have vista installed.

I was able to get the game to run under windows vista.

At first I was having trouble with it. I would double-click the game icon and nothing would happen.

The reason for this I believe is the User Account security that Vista has.
Even if your account has administrative privaleges it appears as though it is not really and "Administrator" account like it would have been under XP.

So, to get the game to run you must run the game as Administrator.

Right-Click the game icon and select properties.
Select the "Compatability" tab and on the bottom you will see a check box for "Run this program as an administrator". Select that and click ok

The game should run now.

If 'Run as Administrator' do not get the demo working, I recommend trying the Vista compatible PhysX driver, here:

Well, it must be 64-bit Vista then.
Ive tried everything recommended here and have had no luck at all.

After I have installed the vista PhysX drivers and done the compatibility thing and the program just does not run, not even a splash screen....

If anyone else comes up with something please let me know, I really want to try this demo, and maybe buy the Full version. But if its not going to run on Vista 64-bit then whats the point...

Some other ideas:
- do you have all the drivers for Vista for your hardware (video of course, but audio as well)?
- if your card is not compatible DirectX 10 (very few are), are you sure you didn't put DirectX 10 instead of DirectX 9?
- do other games work on your computer with Vista 64?

Same problem here with Vista 64 bit. All drivers are up to the latest. Tried all suggestions with the physX driver as well as running in Administrator.

Looks as if this game is incompatible with Vista 64 bit edition. Maybe the dev's need to include this information before it hits store shelves in the US?

Well, I doubt it is plain incompatibility with Vista 64, as I saw reports on the French forum of people who were playing it with Vista 64. Don't know if they tested the demo with Vista 64 though (they were mentionning having better perfs with Vista 64 than with their XP, but as the French version of the game has been released in November, Vista was not really available at the time, so they prolly didn't test the demo on it, and hence it could be a demo only problem).

However, several people had problems with Vista (either 32 or 64) as well, so it's not straight forward (one of them had to use a no-CD to play in Vista, some couldn't even have the game launched).

Turn off the Vista User Account Control and try it again. You can do this by typing "msconfig" from the Run line. Once System Configuration window is open, click the Tools tab and scroll down to the Disable UAC setting. This will pre-populate a reg entry in the lower text field, click the Launch button. You'll need to restart your PC afterwards, but this should allow you to run the Demo. Note: This work-around effectively shuts off Microsoft's user security model in Vista... Once they come out with a fix, I'd recommend turning it back on.

Thanks for the input but turning off UAC and rebooting did nothing for me. Also, I uninstalled and installed a fresh copy of the demo with the same results. For whatever reason, the demo doesn't even display a splash screen when selected. I think I will have to wait until a more Vista 64 bit friendly version of the demo is released.

Doh... Sorry to hear that. I ran across the same error message with a few previous applications and turning off the UAC worked. I was assuming that it would solve this issue as well.

There was an issue with Vista Ultimate, but it has been addressed in the retail version :)

Hi, I recently had the problem but I managed to get around it. The prompt says you need to be admin, so the simplest way is to become the Computer Administrator, and I dont mean the admin of user account, I mean the top Computer Administrator which already has an account when you get the computer. Now follow the steps below to be able to unlock the account. THIS IS NOT DANGEROUS, AND WILL NOT HARM YOUR COMPUTER IN ANY WAY.

1) Click on your start bar
2) In the start search box type CMD (Do Not Press Enter YET)
3) Hold down CTRL + SHIFT + ENTER at the same time
4) Press continue if you get the UAC Prompt
5) Type in the command Line "net user administrator active:yes"
6) Press Enter, and it should say Command Completed Successfully
7) Now Restart Your Computer
8) On your log on screen you should now have two account, Your normal account and a second account which says Administrator.
9) Click on the Administrator Account
10) Run the Program in the Administrator User Account
11) Now Log Off and try to use it on your normal user account
12) To turn the Administrator account off simply do the same as above except, instead of typing "net user administrator active:yes" type "net user administrator active:no" and it will turn the admin account off.

If this does not work, try installing the TAGES driver which is located at http://www.tagesprotection.com/5.5.htm

and if this doesnt work try them both together because it worked for me.
