Hey all,

Is anyone else having problems with their framerates when you use a steering wheel?
I got a microsoft sidewinder wheel and when i try to use it my framerates drop to unplayable :(

When i use keyboard or gamepad i have no further problems.

E 6600
2 gig ddr
MSi 7900 GTP 512 mb

*edit* It seems that more people have the same problem and it looks like it has something to do with force feedback on some racing wheels

MS Sidewinder Wheels are a problem with the performance. Hopefully, this will be addressed in a patch. Other force feedback wheels (I use a Logitech Momo) work fine.

And welcome to the forums :). I hope you enjoy our Atari Community.

Im having the same problem but i have a Logitech Formula Force (USB).

If i disconnect the wheel all is well, steady framerates and all.
When the wheel is connected the game gets unresponsive after the first loadingscreen.

It works without problem with my MS Sidewinder Precision Pro joystick.

Which Logitech software/drivers are you using? I have not converted to Vista yet on my gaming machine, but will this weekend. I did not get any warnings from the compatibility checker with regards to the logitech drivers, but I have not run the game under Vista yet.

BTW -- What are you system specs including gpu and sound card/chipset? Also, are you running any voice chat programs?

I'm pretty sure it has more to do with nvidia solutions then microsoft wheels. I know all 3 betas for me were crap on my 7950GX2 once I plugged in a gravis gamepad, nostromo gamepad, or microsoft wheel.

Its nice to see the beta provided all that feedback, just to get ignored...

then again, so far in this thread we have one user on an nvidia machine with problems with microsoft wheels, and another user on an ATI machine with problems with a logitech wheel.

When i plugged in the wheel, Vista installed drivers for it automatically. If i check controlpanel/gamedevices it shows "Logitech Formula Force" and X/Y axis works ok.
Logitech doesnt have any drivers for Vista yet, says summer 07 on their site.
Im not using anyvoice chat progs.

OG -- something sounds different -- I did play for about a week with a 8800gtx and wheel and did not experience a performance issue. Although, the 8xxx driver are different than the 6/7xxx drivers.

Sipio -- What version Nvidia drivers are you running?

And Kalkyl -- Welcome to the forums. I will do a little research tonight on Vista drivers. If Logitech drivers for Vista are not available for a few months, I may hold off on cutting my system over to Vista.

My Logitec MOMO Racing wheel with force feedback gave me absolutely no problems. I also play with a logitec Rumblepad2 for bikes. I get a solid 75fps

PC specs: AMD Dual core 2.4Ghz, 1gb DDR2, 7900GTX XXX all on stock clocks.

P.S. I did have some problems with newer nvidia drivers, but reverted to older drivers and it ran flawless.

Hey thanks!

Well Vistas drivers works, i can play GTR2 and GT Legends just fine, its just TDU that doesnt work.

I have read somewhere (dont remember where) that people had the same problem with Formula Force on the beta, and that was under WinXP.

And i have an MSI K9N Platinum motherboard nforce 570 ultra with onboard Realtek HD audio if that makes a difference in porformance (dont know). But i do know that the audio quality is alot better than most hi end sound cards i've heard.

Tnx for the reply's so far guys, still having the problems though :(

I am running nvidia drivers version 91.47, i wil try and update my drivers and see if that works.

*edit* well i updated to 93.71 but still doesnt work, really too bad..been waiting for this game for some time now.
After olmost 2 months i finally got my 22" widescreen monitor back from repair and TDU in the stores..thought i would have a good time with it but i really need to use a steering wheel for the real fun.

Hope they adress it in a patch, problems really start as soon as i plug in my microsoft sidewinder wheel :(

Might have to buy a new steering wheel if it takes to long to adress the problem i a patch or so..

I hear you, feeling the same. Its just frustrating tho as it seems as a easy to solve problem, its not as our wheels are buggy, mine has never failed on me, in any game.

It really sucks indeed, good thing that you replyd in this thread too m8, i was looking arround for a new steeringwheel and my eyes fell on the Logitech Formula Force EX.

I see that you are having the same probs as i have and you are using this steering wheel..if i bought it, it would give me even more headache's then i already have!!

It's weird though..i know some peeps have probs too with a logitech G25, and some who dont have problems with this wheel.

Makes it even more difficult to decide what to do..

Doubt seriously that is has anything to do with wheels, if you check the fora where the game is out already (not many), posts about lousy FPS-performance are very frequent.

I've got no trouble whatsoever to run other "heavy" games like SupCom, GTR2, RACE, MED TOT WAR II,... in a high resolution (>1280x960) with most eyecandy turned on.

TDU "runs" like a turtle with a hiccup, certainly if you drive into the more urban parts.., with no more then 30 FPS and drops (actual freezes) well below 20  , which is unplayable for a racegame.

This was the case with the following settings :
1280x960
HDR off
AA off
Detail High

Lowering detail to medium helped a bit +5FPS, but framedrops were still there but just less severe :bulb:

Specs are

XP
AMD 4000+
2 GIG Ram
Sparkle 8800GTX
Logitech DFP
VPP 3-pedalset
SST Shifter

Already closed several background programs and defragmented, and no virus or firewall running.

Hope this gets solved, otherwise I'll just return it to the shop, since lowering the resolution is not my principal with that kind of rig.

Feedback from Atari-Eden concerning the non-addressed BETA-probs and the actual poor performance would be appreciated :)

Just to make it clear: i have the original Formula Force, the one with rubber all around the wheel, not the EX one. Im going to wait a couple of weeks to see if a patch might fix it as it seems like lottery to buy a new wheel just to find out it doesnt work either.

I´ve been in contact with Atari Nordic (im from Sweden) but they told me to contact the store where i bought the wheel:eek: :bulb: :pout: I responded that my wheel works fine in other games and TDU was faulty and not the wheel. I will post their response here when i get it.

If you read our posts  you will find that our games run just fine without the wheel, its when the wheel is conected the problems start.

Im aware that some people have problems with fps too but in this thread we do have a problem with wheels.

Wow, talk about ignorance on Atari's end.
During the beta wheel issues were complained about since day one. Most people came to the conclusion it was poor coding for nividia based machines.
The wheel issue has been known for months now, Eden hasn't done anything about it.

Like kalkys said, it's really a problem with our steering wheels..try it out..unplug you're wheel and see if it improves fps.

This makes it sound like there is a flaw with the wheel, when in fact there is not. It a flaw in the programming of this ported game. It went from an ATI based console with proprietary drivers to a possible nividia based machine with a much larger selection of input drivers.
Its lazy programming, nothing more.

It seems like an easy thing to fix tho. On my machine it works like a charm with a MS precision pro joystick, a Logitech cordless joypad (rumblepad) but not with my wheel, witch works flawless in other games such as GTR2 and GT Legends.
Clearly its TDU thats messing things up.

Maybe has something to do with the way force feedback is handleld, maybe TDU enables ff during launch if there is a ff-wheel connected but i cant even start the game with the wheel, just freezes after first splashscreen.

No more talk on what was in the beta or coding. Thanks.

Let's stick with the issue that we have -- certain wheels and system configurations that are having issues. For those that are having this issue, post the wheel/controller that you are using with along with your system specs including gpu.

Appreciate your concern and input, and will probably unplug the wheel, but 1 thing is for sure, after spending imho a large amount of money on the wheel, pedals and shifter, TDU WILL be played with full setup, keyboard means return to shop :D

i 2 am having strange problem when using my Microsoft Force feedback Sidewinder Wheel or my PS2 pad with USB adapter.

without any of em plugged in and just using USB keyboard and Mouse the game runs smooth like silk @ 40/50fps high detail 4xAA 1280x1024@60Hz, frame rates drop to around 30/40 if i tern off AA and enable HDR. the problems start if i have my wheel pluged in or my PS2 Pad !
at the game start during the airport scene and during character select the framerate drops to about 1fps making it difficult to get passed this part of the game and once in the game the fps is running at about half than normal 15/20 but worse than the every thing is now running in slow motion, the 10 min rental time clock still counts down in real time but the car is in slow-mo and i have no sound at all !

I am now really sure it all has to do with force feedback on some steering wheels, you cant turn it of ingame as far as i know or atleast that didnt work for me.
I turned of the force feedback on my wheel in regedit and i can play the game smooth with my microsoft wheel now.
Not as much fun without the FF but alot better then playing a racegame with keyboard if you ask me.

Game stil need a patch asap though..

My specs are:
7900gtx
AMD X2 4600+
2 Gig Ram
onboard sound

Plays smooth as until i go into controls and enable "Use Steering Wheel" and then gets choppy. The faster i drive the more it stutters, completely unplayable. I can use my steering wheel (Logitech Wingman Formula Force usb) without "use steering wheel" checked, but i don't get force feedback, and my wheel gets a large dead spot that makes it too difficult to drive. P.s. the dead spot only develops in this game and with the option unchecked.

I'll pray for a fix soon! I am willing to buy a G25, but not before i know this is fixed. :)

Thanx.

Anyhow just to add to the list I have the same ol' microsnot force feedback and the reg trick worked wonders for me. Wheel works just no force. Running on a gigabyte 7N-400 Pro2 w/ an ATI x800 and an AMD Athlon XP 3200+ (all oc'ed of course)
