Hi everyone,
I just started on a new set of rocks which I will release as soon as I'm finished with them - before the release of the park I'm building them for - THE ISLAND (http://www.ataricommunity.com/forums/showthread.php?t=573892)
There will be 7 or 8 of these, all different and at various angles, but designed to work together for building various formations. They are roughly 4u (one tile) wide. I'm still texturing, but here's a sneak peek:

Reminds me a lot of the volcanic rocks along the Columbia River gorge...very nice!

At the moment they look like those tribal walls. They would go great on some places and could do great cliffs.

Thanks! I'm actually using pictures from the island of Straffa in Scotland, but the formations are all very similar. I'm going to make a couple more sets that are lighter and darker for other areas.

Thanks! It takes me a LONG time to find pictures suitable for textures and to make these models, so I only make what i absolutely need. However, it would be cool to have some... I'll think about it, and maybe add a cave to the island. BTW, your TOT is awesome.

Tribal walls?
You know, those big log walls, I think they are in the prehistoric set.

Come to think of it, I think the biggest problem would be finding the right image for the texture - I troll the web for images without hard shadows (usually taken on overcast days), and most pictures of stalagmites/tites are taken with flashes - creating glare and shadows... but I'll look into it.

I guess a little bit, but these textures are much more detailed, and will look like piles of rock when finished, and viewed from a distance.

Thanks! I'm excited too!
First piece is finished, and I rotated it to the angle I had in mind when i started - approximately 45 degrees. I'm going to make several versions though, at different angles and diagonals.
Poly count is 173, texture is 512x512.

Basalt columns ARE crystalized lava. That's why they take that shape.

i think you need a better texteure. a larger hi quality texture.

You're kidding, right? The texture is 512x512 - the largest allowed by the game. If you think it looks stretched in places, it's not - that's how the rocks like that actually look. I created the model based on the texture, and pulled out the geometry as indicated by the texture - this, along with all the pieces in this series are from a very large digital photo I found of a whole wall of these rocks. this piece is roughly 10% of that picture.

CB (can I call you CB?) I was thinking about what you said about the textures for stalactites and stalagmites...you could actually probably use a texture similar to this one or similar to the ones in your first rockwork set...I think the shape would be the key...long skinny pyramid/tapering prism shapes with a texture like in these shots would make perfect stalactites and stalagmites in my opinion. What do you think?

Nice to see you making another set. There loking good. I wouldn't worry about the texture it looks fine.
IF you also want to make pices that pull of the in game texture like in my rock set in the importer when selecting the texture stile select terrain texture (above ground) or cliff textur (under ground)

You can call me Andy. I hate my username. I don't know what I was thinking.
Anyway, about the scenery... I was thinking the same thing. The thing I'd like most to capture - aside from the proper shape - if I do cave formations is the smooth and often wet or wet-looking texture they have. Maybe this could be accomplished with a simple texture plus experimentation with the speculative settings in the importer. I've been thinking more about this since you mentioned it, and I think it's worth exploring. Like a cave. As for the Big Thunder style limestone pieces, I wouldn't hold your breath. I probably wont get back on those until I finish the Island and get back on my Disneyland recreation.

They look very nice. I immediately thought "Giant's Causeway" though :p. By the way, 1024x1024 is the largest allowable texture size iirc. 2048 is the first that leads to crashes.

Thanks! Straffa, where the pics/textures are from) is the Scottish end of the Giant's Causeway!
