View Full Version : [TRICK] Higher FPS in cities!

Hey guys!
I was just messing around a bit with all the settings, because I don't have a high end pc and TDU is just lagging TOO much when I drive in the city.
But I found out a trick to make your FPS rise!
Go to your TDU install folder, and RENAME the following folder:
\Euro\Bnk\Details to \Euro\Bnk\BAK_Details
The above will delete all flying stuff in the world: like birds and those silly papers flying around in the city which are causing FPS drops!
And ofcourse you can add the ini tweaks from NecroViolator! Found here:
http://www.ataricommunity.com/forums/showthread.php?t=574274
Let me know if my tweaks worked!

OK... I tried the first one an as it did remove birds an paper debris, it did not help that much in FPS.
As for even trying the second one, I wouldnt want to play the game with no traffic. So no use in me trying. Although Im sure it could help a little.
I think that the main problem for me in the city is the damn fake reflection on the buildings. I cant for the life of me find out how to remove them.

I wil considder this a cheat
\Euro\Bnk\Vehicules\Traffic to \Euro\Bnk\Vehicules\BAK_Traffic
removeing all traffic from the game its a cheat towards online gaming if you drive races with traffic in them there is none traffic

FPS would go up if the ability to disable/enable shadows were implemented, we all know shadows hurt FPS, it isnt as pronounced on high end Hardware but the choice to decide would be nice.

I agree
At high speed you do not notice a shadow.

Shadows is what I wanted since the Beta, but no answer yet on that subject... :(... But IF you remove Traffic and play Online you cant play properly because the Server tries to Synchronize Clients playing... Ive seen people drive through Traffic and they get stuck in the same place where they drove through... DONT Remove Traffic, it destroys gameplay for other people playing with it ON...

IMO playing without traffic is very boring, i am sure most of us can appreciate this feature, it makes the game feel more reel, it stimulates the senses.

Yea, I REALLY hope they put something in to turn off shadows....they always are a BIG hit for ATI cards :( (which I have)

Wow, with all the trees in this game, I can't imagine playing without shadows. My old GeForce 6800 has no problem with them.

Unfortunatly it didn't make any difference to my game.. - it is basically unplayable...
The thing that amazed me, was the game is usaing 1GB of my swap file, where-as in game I am only using 43% of my total ram (2GB) - something very wrong there...
I have a amd 4000+ with 2GB ram and the new Nvidia 8800GTS running under Vista Ultimate 32bit.
I can eat every other game with all options in them turned right up, but with Test drive Unlimited even with my settings as low as I can get them the game is virtually unplayable..:cry:

That's really weird. There seems to be no consistent rhyme or reason to what systems can run TDU well and what systems can't. It's almost like Flight Simulator X.

Hehe, Flight sim X I can max nearly everything out, the same with a really resource hungry game called X3, I can max it to the limits,....

well one thing you could try for giggles if you got 2 gig of ram, is disabling your virtual memory see if forcing the game to use your ram helps.

has nvidia came out with GOOD drivers for the 8800 series cards? im a CSS player and i remember everyone having a fit about how vista played games with the 8800 series cards.

I heartily agree. If you've got 2 gigs of ram, there is absolutely no reason to use a swap file (unless of course you're using the PC for some massive graphic editing or something, but if you're just gaming on it get rid of it.)

correct me if im wrong, but isn't virtual memory untouched unless your computer is using all of your physical memory? from what i've always understood, there can be NO performance increase from disabling it, and it is a pretty bad idea.

My System is
Motherboard - Albatron K8SLI
CPU - AMD Athlon64 4000+ (2412.519 MHz)
Ram - 2GB A-data DDR400
PSU - Enermax Liberty 620w
Graphics Card - Gigabyte Geforce 8800GTS
The Vista part of the machine is for gaming only, nothing else is installed, and I have cut Vista down (Using Vlite) so that all rubbish that's not needed (ie: defender etc) is not even installed.

Well in this case it isn't doing it...
I have the Logitech G15 Keyboard that has a LCD display on it which shows me exactly how much CPU and Ram is being used at any one given point in time.
Trying to play TDU the CPU is at 100% ALL THE TIME, while the ram useage only ever gets as high as about 43%. (In games like X3 it uses upto around 80% so I know there is nothing wrong with the ram)
From what I have read around the net, it is indeed a very bad idea to turn off the pagefile in Vista (more-so than XP)

Well I am using the 101.41 drivers, which up until TDU have given me no troubles at all, and from what I have read on other forums they seem to be the most stable and good drivers for Vista, I know the drivers that were originally installed with Vista were no good, so I got the 101.41 ones from guru when they came out. - As I said before, this is the ONLY game that's given me problems, and I have got games such as: SHIII, X3, FSX and Rise and Fall installed and running perfectly

still boggles my tiny mind how many people went rushing to vista.
not sure what the impact of turning off virtual memory in vista will have, but it certainly can't break the os if you do just to see if it forces your ram to get used.
play vanguard with has open environments and the game likes to cache textures to your hd even if you got tons of ram, one solution people found was to turn off vm to force all the textures to goto ram, and seemed to help the playability of that game for some people, tho not sure if people were on xp or vista.

Hehe well ya got to have the latest and greatest, and at my age I dunno how many more OS's I'll get to play with, so I try to stay up to date :D
I'll give the no page file a go and see what happens tho, the worst that could happen is it crashes the OS. :weird:

yea but any IT pro will tell you wait for a service pack before buying any os. as well many sound card manufacturers drivers are still sporked for vista, and some legal stuff built into vista seems to be pushing all video and audio drivers back in order to comply with protections and sampling checks ms built into vista to stop video piracy and the like.
also vista really hates non ms approved drivers so much so that many beta drivers and non ms released nvidia drivers and the like it will rollback automatically on an update or disable them entirely on a reboot.
now some say they run vista like a charm other say they have endless problems with it. me i am sticking with xp until i feel i need to make a move. but more i read about vista the less i like it. also on a side note ms release statement about their next os is really chilling.
also if your on 3dguru check out the 100.95s people say some good things about them might wanna read the forum thread about em.

i run the game on vista too with a 4000+ 2gb ram and a XFX geforce 7800 GT Extreme. no problems yet .
i think the 8800 is the problem since there a no good drivers.

Woow.. wierd about the differences in machines and issues..
I have:
Windows XP Pro 32 bit
Asus A8V-E Deluxe mobo
AMD Athlon 64 3200+ CPU
2GB Corsair XMS ram
ATI X800 256MB video card
160GB EIDE HDD
21" Widescreen LCD
I have the ingame AA to 4X details HIGH 1280x1024 refresh 60hz
I have my ATI catalyst control center settings to 6x AA AI overdrive is set 6Mhz over stock @ 506MHz only gets to 51C temp.
And I have a very lil bit of slowdown near downtown for about 1-2 seconds then thats it.. nothing more....I see zero lag or heistation. I thought I would be in a world of hurt with the video card I have..

Gah. Is there any tweak that can turn off the shadows? My FPS drops by around 5-10 when I play in 1680x1050. I play with 1280x960, 2x AA, high details on my laptop and I get around 25-30 FPS.

Wow, you are getting that kind of performance with a card thats older than mine. I get 800*600, 4AAA, low detail, no HDR. Something is really wrong with my card.
Also, how do i change the AI overdrive?
