Original Post
I was originally going to announce this set with a download, but ended up announcing it earlier, here (http://www.ataricommunity.com/forums/showpost.php?p=8744343&postcount=35)
As you can see from the banner above, I created the tunnel from Space Mountain. This tunnel is from my, much larger, Space Mountain set which will be released at a later time. The reason why I am releasing this piece early is because I know that it has been requested a lot, and because the rest of the set is far from completed.

There's your answer :D . I am actually making two sets, one featuring exterior pieces, such as the sign and "mountain" itself. The 2nd pack, features interior pieces such as the reentry tunnel and of course, this piece. The 1st pack should be done sometime in April. I'm not sure when the 2nd pack will be done, it is still far from completed.
These look great! a real help! Keep it up.!
Thanks!

Actually, the piece works quite simply. The hardest part was trying to get the turn piece to fit around the track properly.
In the 3rd pic is that a corner piece or just another straight piece?
The piece at the end is designed to fit around turns. I'm still trying to work it out though, because the track is a bit too close to the track, and while the track doesn't intersect it, the coaster train does. I'm not sure if this is visible in the video, I'll have to take another look.
Good work. Very Nice

There are two problems with the pieces. One is they need better textures. But that doesn't mater much.
But the second problem is pretty huge. It deals with the animation. It appears that you only did 2 frames of animation. Anyway, instead of creating the illusion of movement the tunnels are just strobing.
My advice would be to add 1 or 2 more frames of animation into the tunnel lights in order to establish the illusion of movement. It probably means you will have to move the light locations a little but in the end, the illusion of speed will be a hundred times greater.

About the textures, which ones are you referring to? The base of the tunnel, I already have better textures for, I just hadn't added them in when I recorded the video or took the screenshots.
Now, with the animation, yes, I only used two frames. And the "strobe" effect, is unfortunately more noticable in game. One reason, besides the fact that there is only two frames, is that the lights are not all the same size. Because of the way it is designed, the lights at the end of the tunnel are smaller then the ones in the center (http://img253.imageshack.us/img253/338/sizingjl7.png) (Yellow = 0.844 Units ; Red = 1.031 Units), and the only way it would be possible to fix is to completely resize all the lights and possibly overlap them. I hadn't realized this until I was almost completely done, but I felt that the slight differences wouldn't be noticeable. They aren't, unless the tunnel is animating.
Now the turn is a different story. Because of it's unusual shape, it is impossible to get the lights to be the same size, which may also cause the light effect to look awkward.

xss277x
03-11-2007, 04:55 PM
Hmm, it appears there are more problems with the set then I realized. I ran RCT3 to check for any problems with the objects, and there are still a few that need to be fixed, and I'm unsure of how long it will take to solve each issue. Which leaves me with 3 options. I could either update the set now, and release it later then expected, update the set now, and wait to release it with my entire Space Mountain pack, or not update it, and release it tonight.
Fifa06duDe
03-11-2007, 05:04 PM
how about not update it, and release it tonight, and it will keep everyone who wants the set happy for awhile, and then you update it later!
xss277x
03-11-2007, 05:27 PM
Well, I'm definitely going to update it for the release of my Space Mountain pack, but I'm unsure if I should release it as is. I just did a test with the animated textures that went well, so it wouldn't take very long to update that.
But there are still other minor issues to correct, and I don't want to release a half completed set.

I tried adding another frame in, but after viewing the tunnel again, perhaps it wasn't really a good idea after all. The effect just didn't turn out as well as I was hoping, and I even tried tweaking the speed of the animation. So the set will be released tonight, as is.
However there will likely be some changes when the objects reappear in my Space Mountain Pack :)

Size doesn't really matter. As long as the animation is more fluid and makes sense it wont really be noticable and people wont care.
xss277x
03-11-2007, 08:44 PM
^ How do you suggest I make it more fluid? I already tried changing the order that the lights light up in, (which allowed me to add more frames) and it didn't look that great. The animation looked lagged.

You may need to redesign the tunnels a little and I know you do not want to do that. But having the light panels closer together might help.
But if you aren't doing that.
Have the light pattern be this. Have at least 2 unlit panels between every lit panel. The number of unlits does not matter as long as it is more than 1.
Now the light should move at a good speed to maintain constant motion. Make sure the light does not stay at one panel for more than 8/24ths of a second. (When I animate, there are 24 frames per second.)
But anyway, make sure that the lights stay less than a third of a second.
Now the faster the rate, the better it will work and your brain will actually fill in the middle.
So in the end, you just need the lights to move faster.

Well, I actually was going to try and make it have two panels inbetween each lit panel, but I'm not sure how to because of the way that the tunnel is designed. The reason why they are spaced the way that they are is because I tried to make the tunnel as accurate as possible.

ooh, i tried it out, and the tunnel is a bit low, not high enough for my giga coaster
xss277x
03-12-2007, 06:45 PM
Well again, the tunnel was designed for use with the hyper-twister/extended coaster. I tried it on a giga coaster and it seemed to work fine, maybe it was the way you placed it?

Well then you can make the tunnel section two squares long.
But in terms of accuracy. It wont really matter for something like this. As long as the tunnel looks like the tunnel you are refering to, people will see it as the blue light tunnel from Space Mountain. Try it some time. But in many of the classes I take, we are encouraged to exaggerate stuff all the time.
For thumbnailing for any kind of art work, it is essential to test your boundaries and see how exaggerated you can get. Don't take the full exaggeration, just know your boundaries.
But before anything, make sure you can make an accurate model. And you have done that already. So give it a shot when you have free time. It is a great way to learn.

Actually you brought up something that I had considered when I started the tunnel. After the first test I did, I noticed that at certain angles it was obvious that the tunnel was only switching the lights, so I considered making it two tiles long. But I decided to make it one, because if you were to make a track section, 5 tiles for example, one of the tiles couldn't be covered by the tunnel without intersecting the pieces.
Now one thing I'm not sure I understand. You're saying that I should try to exaggerate the tunnel?
hm... are u making space mountain dome ??

Not exactly. I am saying you can do simple changes to the tunnels design and it will look accurate even if it isn't. Say change the scale of the lights or something like that.

Don't worry, I'm currently working on both the interior and exterior packs. I just don't know when they'll be released. I may release pieces from them early, like I did with this piece.
Not exactly. I am saying you can do simple changes to the tunnels design and it will look accurate even if it isn't. Say change the scale of the lights or something like that.
Well, not all the lights are the exact same size. There are some that are over .200 units under the normal size of 1.031 units.

What I mean is really change the proportion of all the lights overall. Like say, if there were 3 lights across each tube piece (I don't know the actual amount.), you could make it 6 pieces by shrinking it down. Of course it would mean you would have to double the number of lights on the tube's circumference as well. But in the end the tube would still look like the Space Mountain tube.

03-13-2007, 01:55 AM

very cool very realistic..
I tried to create a space mountain/tomarrowland am still working to improve it but it was a (well if no one else is going to make one then I will) deal so if someone's making a great version along w/great cs, i'll prob retire my attempts or use it as some other park.
I think you mentioned that it animates.. I would like to say something about the sound though. I tried to put sound, originally (using the speakers pack) into my space mountain time warp tunnels but I noticed, if you made it too low, you couldn't hardly hear it and if you made it too loud, you heard it more through the rest of the ride then in the tunnel.
Is there any way to create walls that seal off sound?? This way, they can be built around your tubes so you can make the sound loud and it doesn't echo throughout space mountain. If not yet, please, cs guru's, thats the thing to play with.
Thanks for listening :) :)
xss277x

I don't see why shadows would affect such a small piece. Besides, I tested the set on two different computers, one with only the original, unpatched version of RCT3 (Retail). The other, featuring all the expansions/patches. I'm not sure what could be the problem, you could try redownloading/reinstalling it and see if that helps at all. :)
...I can't wait to see the other pieces!!
This tunnel is from my, much larger, Space Mountain set which will be released at a later time. (Update 3/14: The set has been cancelled)
Perhaps you may still be able to see them, though =/

I'm using an older version of Google Sketchup. (The beta version)
The beta version is no longer available, but the final version is. There aren't many changes between the two versions. You can download it here:

xss277x

Firstly, the beta version is no longer available.
Secondly, I'm not sure what you mean by import. Are you trying to import a model into Google Sketchup?

As you can tell from the thread title, the limited release period is over. This set is no longer available and at this time I'm unsure if the full pack will ever be released. Check back for possible updates.

Personally I see no reason, why you have removed the link. What have you expect? More response? As I know the community they share your set further without your knowledge.
When I post here something like "Miss the download-period, can anyone please help out?" I'm sure that someone will send me the send. And I would do the same for anyone else here.
I'm not sure, If I should leave your set on the list of released custom-scenery any longer. On this list is normally any custom scenery, that you can download somewhere and not scenery, that isn't available.

To me this is wrong but it is not... I think people who join Atari are going to want to downloade this, but soon to find out they can't! Why make it then? Why make it, if your not going to share it with everybody??
We will just have to ask people for the file... Yeah its cool but why not share the Cool?

Go ahead and remove it from the list, I don't care.
The reason why I removed the set is because this piece was more of a demo. Don't think of it as an actual set, think of it as a preview of what's to come.
The community can share it if they want, it's not a big deal, but if I catch file sharing somewhere you won't see the full set any time soon.

Well this set wasn't really a set. It was a preview of the entire set, where this piece will end up in the future.
any idea on when the full set will be released
I don't know, the poor feedback on this piece isn't really encouraging me to release the entire set.
To everyone else, if you want me to rerelease this preview set, I will. Just ask.

Don't rerelease the preview set but work on the full set instead. You will learn many new things and totally amaze people.
What I really want to see done is the light tunnel turn for the wider turns. Because remember the outside perimiter of the Space Mountain is a curve.

^ Gah the turn pieces are so difficult! :p I suppose it would make the set better though.
If I rerelease the preview set, I won't include the modified pieces in it. I would simply add the link back.
With the full set, in it's current state, it's not very amazing. That is why I am holding back on making a thread for it. No pics, no clicks, and I don't want to have to show poor pics, just to get a few clicks.

Maybe you should show some pictures, that will keep this thread alive.
And also, you get better with practice. So,you should(you do't have to)show pictures of the set.It would make people want this set so when you finish it you will get lots of downloads.
This is just a suggestion. And also, very nice tunnel
