View Full Version : These unco controls aren't user friendly

I have to say im extremley annoyed with the unco control setup this game uses. After the amount of talk from the demo version I would have thought there would be a way to at least somewhat customize your own keys and camera controls.

Especially if you zoom to the 3rd person style camera view, for a start you cant do anything if there is a monster anywhere behind you on the camera, no matter where you click it thinks you wanto attack the enemy. A simple set of keys to manually move your character would have been a lot more user friendly. Secondly you cannot zoom out without panning when in that view and that seriously narrows down the FoV.

I might then decide to use the top-down view, but then I can't see near as far and most ranged enemys can shoot at me from off screen.

A simple system such as, hold middle mouse button and move:
Up/Down to pan the camera
Left/Right to turn the camera (already as it is)
and Mouse Scrolling to zoom in (without panning)
Also the camera should move around smoother with a faster acceleration (it starts off really slow when you first start turning)

Also I hate numbers 5-0 on my keyboard, its sort of ok having to use them with weapons but using 9 or 0 for potions results in me wasting a lot of the wrong potions, or selecting weapons when I need health.

No matter how much practice I have at this I just cannot get used to these controls. I play other RPGs similar to this and all of those are a hell of a lot more user friendly than this poor excuse for controls. Even if they arn't they at least let you change them to something that is.

I agree completely. I would prefer to be able to set the keys to do what I want. For eg. As a magic user, the 1 and 2 keys are pretty much useless to me (actually 3 is as well, since I would set the element missiles to be the default left click attack and never change it again).

And then, I MUST use 4,5,6,7,8 which I dislike. And why must 0 and 9 be assigned to potions??? Why can't I assign potions to some keys that are more convenient to press?

I won't even go to the camera issues, because that's been discussed a lot on the board already. Hopefully the devs will be fixing/improving that in the next patch (whenever that is).

Also, it would be nice to be able to use W S A D to move the character (with a assignable key/mouse button for autorun) if we so choose, since the camera controls being so unforgiving, don't exactly help you click wherever you want whenever you want.

It's not so bad once you get used to it, it's awkward at first, though. They should let you customize the layout though.

"Also I hate numbers 5-0 on my keyboard"

Really? I have it in for the letters A, F, I and ~. I just don't like their attitude.

metoo.

Customizeable controls

Manual (WASD) character movement

both would be extra-nice.

WASD are generally FPS keys... most RPG games have converted to the point and click method which generally give better results. For the camera and stuff like that the only thing I hate is that there is no way for the game to delineate if you're trying to pick up an item or talk to a character / attack. At a minimum there should be a hot key (like CTRL) that will highlight a different layer where drops are located so that you can acquire them without having to move yourself AND your companions away from the drop in order to pick them up.

Actually most of the newer RPGs which are set in 3D environments instead of isometric views (like diablo), or top down views, offer the option to move the char using WASD.

For eg. world of warcraft, neverwinter nights 1 & 2, and several other RPG games offer support for WASD. Of course you can still choose to do point and click if you so choose, but in a lot of the cases, since you are really playing a RPG but in a 3rd person viewing mode, WASD is more convenient.

Now, in Silverfall, the viewing mode isn't isometric, 3rd person or anything like I've seen in any other game. If you zoom in too much, it looks like 3rd person, where WASD would be great. If you zoom out too much, you can't see too far ahead, but point and click works ok.

Really the problem is not the lack of WASD but bad camera controls.
