Always been a lurker here... Hello everyone! I feel now is the time to speak out. Noticing recent trends at Atari with regards to Digital Distribution I think we can convince them to do one of the I-War games as a Digital Download. I wanted to drum up community support for this classic game. One of my personal favorites.
Sign this petition if Atari should do a Digital Download of one of the I-War games on their site Atari.com/us
We should get people interested in this and maybe they can rerelease this classic game like they have been doing with other games recently...

perhaps they should.
Eidos does it, so why shouldn't Atari

Agreed, that would be very nice - it could very easily be set up through Steam or somesuch, and get a good deal of publicity that way.

Maybe we can have a version compatible with d3d this way?
Not very realistic - it probably means lot of work. Digital download of EoC is much more likely.

It is sad that there's even a question of this. Of course product that is this far past its earning years, and yet so beloved should be available somehow, and legitimately. I noticed some sadness elsewhere that the official site has passed into the darkness. In an ideal world Atari would let the community resurrect that, along with a distributable version of the code to the games, and for great justice: source code and resource files.
This is, of course, crazy unlikely.

Not a bad idea. Of all the games? Just Defiance? Just EoC?
It would have to come with some sort of guide to make it compatible with newer systems.

I say all, it is getting increasingly harder to come by the original disks anymore.
I am in full support of an I-war download.

Eidos sells all its game thru its own online store
and not just new ones, some very old ones too. Stuff you have to coerce into running on todays machines.
I don't think they provide support for older titles, which is fine, since they cost less than 10$

It'd be a great idea, except for the fact that I-War and Defiance don't work well on modern machines. If only they could be updated to run on modern hardware.
I-War 2 works better, though there are some incompatibilities with some modern video cards.

Indeed, that would be my main concern. Then again, the people who want the game usually know they will have to tweak their systems. Their biggest problem is not being able to find the game.
Some kind of troubleshooting guide for newer systems could be made...

I am sure there will be someone working on a Emulator soon enough.
Then i will be able to play I-War1, till then i suppose they could do some kind of deal with places like GameTap, which do have emulators in place to let you play some very very very old games.

Hey all!
I've asked the Engineering team to take a look at the fesability of doing I-War 2. We need to see if we have a clean copy that we can prepare for Digital Distribution. If we do then we should be good to go :)
I think that an emulator could do the trick.
If they get to create a working emulator for older PCs in different modes, to support older games, that would be a heck of a real nice product.
I would buy it with my eyes closed.

Any chance of Iwar1? I know it'd take a fair bit of work to re-release it, since you would need to write an OpenGL renderer (Or D3D, but OpenGL is closer to Glide (I think) and thus should be easier), and the timing code and memory allocator need work, and no doubt you'd find a whole list of other things to do, but Iwar1 is one of those games that should not be permitted to fade away.

Good to hear! But I still think I-War1 could be released with some sort of warning that it doesn't run well and a link to some sort of compatibility guide. I think it's a harder game to find that many people are interested in because of how different it is.
Then again, it's probably harder to make a digital release of a game that's spread-out onto three CDs. Which is why Defiance may be the best choice, but still :)

I too would like I-War1, repackaged so that i can install it on XP64.
But do start with IWar2 (since i expect it to be technically easier)

The issue with digital releases is that they are not technically any different. IE, the sourcecode doesn't change at all. They are just "re-packaged" to be downloaded. Which has plenty of benefits— people who want these games (and we do get people coming in here asking for where they can buy I-War) can buy it, even though it's an old title and would cost too much money to actually physically distribute.
*Dreams of an Iwar & Defiance remake in glorious DX9/10 using the old pre-render models as the realtime models*
*Wakes to the sad truth*

We can always hope. In particular, we can hope for a moddable Iwar3 to provide an engine for an Iwar/defiance remake.
But Atari wont do that unless they think they can make money from it, so lets how the IWar2 re-release happens and sells well.

Been a long time since I've been here.... "Last visited: 11-18-2006" haha.
I definitely think a download version would be nice even though I still have all the CDs around.
