View Full Version : [WIP] Spanky vs SHREK - Far Far Away (New Wall Pieces) - Update: 28.07.07
RCT-Spanky

My western-Set is on hold, but I will continue it later. I spend my time currently with a new theme, that I have since many years in my mind and which my brother and I want to build since the old RCT2-times.
Welcome to the fantastic world of SHREK!!

It's great to see you're still showing us your stuff here. :D  I think these pieces look great so far, and it's always useful to have the original RCT3 sets expanded. Can't wait to see more, and I hope you get the textures looking how you want them.

Yay Spanky!
You've got designs for stuff that will really help fill some of the missing pieces. I really like each piece you've shown. One possible request? On the western wall there is a cornice piece on some of them (as you show in your screen), would it be possible to make that a seperate object, so it's like shygut's cornice, just smaller?

Hello Spanky,
I am glad that you decided to stay
I have to admit after eezee leaving I was quite annoyed that you wanted to leave as well - simply because we should be able to ignore the occassional idiots who try to ruin things for us. I am not talking about constructive criticism, but about peeps who try to provoke us. There are far too many nice people here to take the few idiots serious. I know not everybody can deal with this sort of behaviour, but feel as grown-ups we should be able to ;)
Now on topic - would you possibly share your trick of using the game textures? I cannot use them

But how should I know, if my latest ideas are okay for anyone without any feedback? I have enjoyed your support very much in the past and so I think it's time to draw a line and starting up again.
I wish I was the only forum member that only felt like that. It's not a very good feeling.
RCT-Spanky, I think this is a good idea, and will fit in perfecly with the other pieces when they are done.

 ... Good decision, Spanky!
Don't let the occasional jerks ruin our nice community...
I think this looks very promising, you have found niches that certainly can use some new life... Both the western and the oriental themes could use fresh pieces...
I look forward to this project! Kind regards, Magnum...:)

Thanks for the nice comments ... I'm sure we all have learned our lessons.
Now on topic - would you possibly share your trick of using the game textures? I cannot use them
Ooh ... nothing special. You just need the eyes of an frog, two pairs of hairy spider legs, some hairs of a rabbits ear, a little bit flour, and the blood of a dead smurf (just for the color) ... oops sorry, that was the recipe for viagra. I better send you the program with email.
Edit: The email returned, do you have a new email-address?
 ... Good decision, Spanky!
I think this looks very promising, you have found niches that certainly can use some new life... Both the western and the oriental themes could use fresh pieces...
I also think, that this sets need an refurbishment and some new pieces. The oriental theme is currently on my "I do it later"-list, but the western-theme should be my next set. Thanks to Osudenny for his ideas.
One possible request? On the western wall there is a cornice piece on some of them (as you show in your screen), would it be possible to make that a seperate object, so it's like shyguy's cornice, just smaller?
The cornices are on my list. I need them for the diagonal wall too. But I make them as seperate objects, so you can use them for other ideas too.

Oh, I really like it Spanky! Love the new signs, and the new walls line up well...nice job!
The original walls were re-colorable, I was wondering if your's are, and if not, maybe that's the cause of the color difference? I oftentimes color them gray to get the 'sun-bleached' look.

Yay! Spanky is back too. Thank you for sticking with us, the place wouldnt be the same without all of you wonderful German CS creators! If i may make a suggestion, (and it is just a suggestion.) Could you make some angled windows? This game is seriously lacking in that area.
Now my old west section of "Land of Make Believe" will be put on hold until i can add some of this excellent scenery! The other areas have been getting neglected lately, now i have the perfect excuse to go back to them. my thanks go to you and all of the wonderful people that make cs for the rest of us, the game is constantly enhanced by the things you give us to play with. Thanks for sharing.

Hi, Spanky wow! I love your custom Wild West as Dodge City or Old West.
you know I went to Ghost Town in Arizona and I know just look like Wild West. Grocery, Hotel, Jail, Sheriff, Blacksmith, Saloon, Storehouse, Post Office I think, and more. just I remember the Toilet outback with crescent shaped on door. Horses parking ties on rack and old water pump with bowl.
you want to add the swinging door? of course just I seen it as like a shortly swinging doors at saloon. I don't think I have pictures of wild west town.
Ok, Thank you and catch ya later.

On the picture you can see an angled western-wall, an angled western-wall with a doorway. I used the original texture, but the colours looks different. I have also seen, that I must turn the texture upside down.
I don't know which version of the dumper you're using, but the latest one should be in the source for the importer, or binaries are kicking around Vodhins forums. The dumper should tell you what texture style is used, often the Frontier pieces use different textures styles from the standard SIOpaque. The stone pieces in the Atlantis and Carribean sets all have an alpha map which controls how much glow occurs from moonlight. I can't remember the texture style offhand, you'll have to work it out using the dumper.

Thanks The_Cook for that hint. I will check it out.
Currently i have no idea, why my textures are always too light, because I didn't change anything. Maybe I must test a fe of the flags. Fortunatly the whole sid-files are available from jonwil, so i could try to compare my objects with the original ones.
As I know, there's one flag for the collision detection, so i have to make sure, that I uncheck it, because I want to make a set which is so versatile as possible.

Hi again ...
thanks for your nice support. After a little break it's time for a little update.
First of all: I have managed my problem with the colourable walls. They have now the same colour as the original walls from the game. I'm really a little proud of it. :D
Okay, here are a few new screenshots:
http://img408.imageshack.us/img408/2111/western02nw8.jpg
^ Looks like your western town will get an Saloon next time.
http://img149.imageshack.us/img149/4169/western01is7.png
^ The Saloon-Sign came in two versions, one straight and one diagonal. The door has a problem with a missing face in the 3D-model. But this will be fixed soon.
http://img149.imageshack.us/img149/7409/western03hk0.jpg
^ On this picture you can better see the diagonal wall pieces. Any wall in this set will be released as straight AND diagonal version. BTW: Have you seen the cornices? Also as a straight and diagonal version with matching cornerpieces.
Any wall is recolourable. Have you noticed, that you can combine three colors in one wall (see undertaker walls). The little brown effects on this dark grey walls give them a touch of an unfinished painting. Not somethin' that I have planned, but much appreciated.

wow, Spanky, I'm impressed. I used to use the western scenery a lot, before custom scenery came into town. I guess I'll have to take a plunge in it again, when you release your excellent additions!

Looks fantastic-

Thank you
The "problem" on this picture is, that I have mixed the original walls with my walls together. The texture on the original walls was placed a little bit higher.
Because I also want to make 1H, 2H and maybe 4H walls, I'm not sure, if it's nessary to fix it.
A real problem could be to make the veranda roof and floor for the diagonal pieces.

Thank you too. I also think, that we didn't see enough old western themes in our current parks. Most parks have a western-town, but in RCT3 no-one would (or could) a great western-releated town.
About the cabinet. That's a raw billboard-version, just for this pictures.

I can see a thousand or more Frontierland and Knott's Berry Farm recreations with this set. I can use this for a Big Thunder recreation or even better, the perfect Phantom Manor recreation, which I was wanting to make with the in-game scenery like Hethetheth is doing for his rides, but this set could enhance it.

Because I need a small addition for my german village I've played around with a sandstone-texture. And it looks like that my next set will be a generic sandstone-wallset, and not the wild west-set (not canceled, just on hold).
Here is a preview-picture of the currently incomplete set:
http://img257.imageshack.us/img257/6973/castlewallsetkf4.jpg

Spanky love the walls but hoping you don't give up on the western theme set. Your work is great!!!
No, I don't give up the western theme. This new set allows me better to testing the size of the textures because of the pattern. I want to add the wooden beam with the shell-pattern from my german village-building to the western set, but I must change the texture for the diagonal beams.
from the way you took the picture, it looks like the only straight piece is the one after the curve. looks good! are you going to have all of your sets in one thread?
I think, we have more than enough threads with a WIP-Status. If I would start always a new thread with any new idea I have, I need a seperate board.
Take this a my research-thread. If one of the sets will be available or need more attention, I open a different thread.
I agree with you about the angle of that pic. It looks really, like the diagonal wall was straigt and the straigth ones are angled. In the next picture I have leave the grid for a better orientation.
On this picture I have added a plain wall (1H) without the pattern. As you also can see, some additional items for my hedges-set are on the way too:

Cutrrently I'm more than happy to get my scenery into the game. I'm unfortunatly very far away from playing with animations. But it's a good idea and I will add this door-animation to my list.
Milkshape has a very small range of options for making the scenery I really want. But I try to do my best. Here's another very small update with a new wall (4H with a window).
http://img115.imageshack.us/img115/6937/testscreenyb7.jpg
That window will be filled with a pattern, that looks like stained glass. In this version the window is visible from both sides. It could be, that I seperate the window from the wall and add it just as a simple window to this set, so anyone can use it also with other sets too.

I have a small problem wiuth the textures on my curved walls. Has anyone an idea, how I can fix this dark shadows and the edges of the curved walls?

I have also tried to build my first more complex model. Maybe you know now, what my next park object should be.
http://img261.imageshack.us/img261/5628/schoolbusfy3.jpg
The texturing isn't complete yet. And don't ask for the polygons. If I make the wheels with alpha-textures on simple boxes, anything is in the green area.
StarRngr4.0
07-06-2007, 05:41 PM
yeah. move the edge back maybe 10'th of a modler unit and extrude an additional flat face that aligns with the moddeling grid. do this for both sides of the curve. This will provide a flat seam who's normals automacially match and will remove the shading oopsie.
The_Cook
07-07-2007, 04:53 AM
It's your surface normals. You've welded the curved surface to make it smooth, but the very end surface normals have been welded to the polygon around the corner. You need to separate out the triangles that make up the curved portion and weld them as a block to get them smooth.
Try not to add an extra face since that means extra triangles which take longer to render.

Love what you are doing here!
I have dozens of ideas already for those new stained glass windows! Could you possibly consider creating three pieces for the window, (bottom, middle, and top) so we could make windows of various heights? Similar to what the Cook did with his gothic windows? Thanks a million!
And by the way, hurry up, already!!! (LOL) Totally kidding!!!

I know what I always miss in other sets, that's why I make this curved and angled pieces too.
The planter has also made his way in the game. The giant barrel is an object, that i've made for "The Poison Apple" and the courtyard of Duloc Castle. (And offcourse for the german village!!!)

Wow, love it. I love the texture as well.
I had a quick question. I noticed you made a new tree (which looks great by the way) and along the lines, I was wondering if you were considering making your hedges work on diagonals as well. I use them primarily as path borders in my park, and I would love to see if you would consider working on angles, which would add much more flexibility. Don't think this is a request, it's not. I am just wondering.
Anyway, do I see some new flowers on that windowsill?

Nah, they're the flowers from DasMatze's Swizz It!, I think...
Anyways, looks awesome Spanky! Are there plans for a curved base wall?

Thanks for your responses.
The idea with the diagonal hedges is great. Because I need some more more of this trimmed bushes and hedges for some parts of the Far Far Away Romeo Drive (which is a medievil version of the Rodeo Drive in Beverly Hills BTW), I'm sure an expansion for my hedges set will come with this new set too.
I have plans for a curved base wall and also for curved cornices and parapets. Because Milkshape is in some way not so flexible for some of the objects I needed, I want ask Eezee for his help.
The flowers in the windowboxes (and the boxes) are from DasMatze's SwizzIt-Set. The fern in the flowerpot is from the Romania Asmodia-Set by Asmodis.

Again another small update ... I have added the new cornices (straight and diagonal parts) to my set. I must add some plugs for the corners
BTW: The railings over my cornices are from eeZee's upcoming Haunted Mansion-Set. I want add some more railings to my set later too.

Hi everyone,
I have updated the set with a very few new objects. Maybe you know, that the Main Street of Far Far Away is a medievil look-a-like of the Rodeo Drive in Beverly Hills. In the movies it was called Romeo Drive.
This is my version of Tiffany, with a Farbucks Coffeeshop on the first floor.
http://img513.imageshack.us/img513/945/far009ji3.jpg
New Pieces are the window-walls with a base (glass, clock by The_Cook, door, railings by eeZee, windows, awnings by Shyguy, fountain by LuckyGirl, pavement by aceana) and small curved pieces (quarter tile, four curved pieces fill one tile in RCT3)

Spanky had a computer crash recently, and lost a lot of his CS and his parks. I do not know if this set was among them.
If you run a search on Shrek, you will undoubtably find his other threads.
BTW, welcome to the forums!

Unfortunately Citytrader is correct. I've lost a lot of my Parks (and it's always me who tell other users here to make backups :o) Fortunately I have a backup of this set (and of the other Shrek-Sets too). The computer is fixed meanwhile, but I'm currently also a little "busy" with my real life (I have a pinched nerve in my right arm and some "trouble" with my father). So please expect no updates on any of my projects for the next time. Thanks for your patient and understanding.

Well here is a get well wish for you, and hope it is nothing serious.
I can't believe I missed this set as Shrek is a great theme. I personally like how light the textures are since everything on Romeo drive was kind of clean and bright. Your attention to detail is amazing, the barrel texture made my jaw ache from hitting the floor.
Whether it takes you a day or another year to get back to this set, or even if you decide to scrap it, it really matters not. All that matters is what really counts in life, family, and friends. Hope you get things fixed and sorted out Spanky.

OK, if you are referring to the random stone wall, it is part of Shyguy's Alpine set, and he borrowed that particular texture from another CS set, one of the original dark ride sets, I forget who's, however.
Now if you are referring to the cut stone, that is the whole point of this thread, it is new CS Spanky was working on over a year ago, but he has not generally released it yet.
I sincerely hope you are referring to the former, and not the latter, as that just means you did not even bother to review the thread before posting. There is more here than just pretty pictures.
