Hit space bar > Add Camera. Then your render should work

In the top try menu bar hit add, and from the drop down box hit Camera.
For some reason blender saves what you did last, If you added a mesh last, then when you hit space again only mesh will show up. In this case you must go to the top menu bar as I just said.

Hope this helps.

as far as milkshape vs blender, milkshape (iv heard) is much easier, If you start out using blender, and learn it and get used to it, it is fairly easy. Its the learning stage that is easier in milkshape than in blender. May I see something that you have tried to make in milkshape?

Thanks

EDIT: Also I may know the reason for the dissapearing vertices. When you select the vertices and hit "G" to move them, if you accidentally hit "H", it hides those vertices so that they dissapear, to make them reappear hold alt and press H

You most certainly can. One of the stickies in the CS forum is Custom Scenery help and tutorials, go there and read through those if you wish to try to make some ;)
