You know on Dive coasters such as Oblivion, Sheikra, and Griffon? And even Millennium Force's lift is at a steeper angle. So this makes Dive Coasters and such more realistic.

There's quite a large gap at the top of each piece; that should probably be looked into unless you want the mechanics to be excellent climbers.

I like the grey set in the 2nd pic... the added supports up to the handrail look much more realistic.
Will be an excellent addition to the game, no doubt... Hope you get the alignment problems worked out on curved bits.. and you'll probably be my personal hero every time I boot up RCT3 if you get catwalks on the diagonal accomplished. ;)

Yeah, I am going to try it. If I can get a hold of Jcat, I will ask him if he still has the textures. Though the catwalk might be different.

Defanitly planned.
Ok, so in between times of throwing up (sick day) I had a chance to work with this, and decided to try the diagonals. I have the positioning right but:
http://i19.tinypic.com/4ozrq8g.jpg
For some reason, the angle is different on a 45 degree than on regular placement. So I will keep you guys updated whenever possible.
Oh, and I will add some more supports to the railing. That was just the test one.

Looks like it's gonna take a lot of trial and error to get this one.
Are you going to be doing ones for the regular inclined lifts too, or just the extreme steep ones?

Probably, so that everything matches up together, with out it standing out. But I have yet to test to see the difference between mine and Jcats, seeing as I'm on my laptop which has No scenery except mine.
Edit: The 45 diagonal one is giving me hell. I can't get it right.
Edit2: This is really frustrating, so I am going to have to give up on it for the day. The curved ones however are progressing slowly but surely.
So here is what I have planned out, and the percentages so far.
-Steep- 60% done
-Diagonal Steep - 25% done
-Regular - 0%
-Regular diagonal- 0%
-Small Curved - 10%
-Medium Curved - 10%
-Large Curved - 5%
-Steep to flat - 0%
-Regular to Flat-0%
And some Misc. Objects that I haven't decided upon.

Since you're doing the whole lift elements... some interesting items to include would be a loudspeaker that attatches to the handrail, for music or auto-spiels... very common on many rides....
Also, not quite as necessary, but a simple addition.. would be a box containing a maintenance phone. Again, a common addition that would be pretty simple to do.
Platforms for underneath inverted coasters on the 45 would be nice, as well...

Anyway, just to let you know, I am having some troubles now, especially getting the whole object to show. I redid the model because I found some problems with it, but for some reason, it does not want to cooperate with me. Parts of the model aren't showing up in game, which I know why, but haven't had time to fix it yet.

And when you're doing the 60 degree angle diagonal, then remember 2.828427124...
1.414... is the square root of 2, which is the ratio of the hypotenuse to the length of the sides of a right angled triangle where the two sides are of identical length. By scaling the piece by √2 prior to rotation it means that after rotation it will stretch from corner to corner. All fairly simple high-school geometry, nothing complex.
I'm not sure where you got 2.828... from, it shouldn't factor into creating diagonal pieces at all.

It looks alright. Those are single plane steps right, have you set their texturing to double-sided (ex: SIOpaqueDS)? That might be your problem, although I'm not sure what's not showing up in-game, so I could be wrong.

Actually, I think I fixed it, I will have to check when I import it.
Oh, and those aren't single planes, which I am going to have to fix. I don't exactly remember why they aren't
Update sometime soon, working on diagonals still (I had to restart the model) and am currently looking for a better texture. This one seems a little too...bright And the curved ones aren't looking like they should. Just some more patience will do the trick I guess.

http://i12.tinypic.com/5yhghkz.jpg
Alignment is correct.
http://i19.tinypic.com/6ftayyw.jpg
But some of the steps disappear at certain angles.
http://i19.tinypic.com/6ba0jk1.jpg
The steps seem a little small to me, does anyone else thing so? Oh and I am going to get rid of the double bar on the railing.
Ok, so on to something new. I am going to try and get some steep to flat ones done tonight. Angled ones tomorrow, and curved ones sooner or later.

I'm fully aware of how you did your math, Cook. I believe the steep pieces in the game are at a 60 degree angle, correct? If so, then the length for a piece (the hypoteneuse of the triangle formed by the length of the diagonal and height of the track piece) going 60 and diagonal would be 2.828 (twice sqrt2). 30, 60, 90 triangles are very easy to work with; the hypoteneuse is trwice the length of the shortest leg, and the longest leg is the shortest one *sqrt3. That's where I got my number from.
And I took geometry in Jr. High :p

Ok, so I finally found some motivation to texture and get it imported. A few things are wrong, but easily fixable I think.
http://i11.tinypic.com/6exbdc0.jpg
Shows the transition between the flat one, and the curved one.
http://i11.tinypic.com/6241yfb.jpg
Close up shows the curved is a little smaller than the flat one, but easily fixable. The only thing was the flat and curve ones don't quite line up with the steep one, so I have to take some time to fix it. And the curved one is too small a radius to fit around the small one (on the outside) and I haven't yet tried it on the inside portion
Slowly but surely things are progressing.
Also, is there anyone who can tell me how to make recolorable textures in the Gimp? The only one I found was for Photoshop.

And how mature. Who was the 1-star voter? Please step forward and let me know why it's deserves one star. And if it is who I think it is, then you seriously need to grow up. Because these petty little games will make you look like a bigger fool, and quite frankly, makes you look like a baby.

It seem so, but tbh Stars dont mean jack to me. I as well as many other members on this fourm know that this set will be very handy when its finished. Oh and im glad you plan on having both solid deck and non solid deck for the flat peices.
I do have an idea about something else you might think about adding to the set.. Transfer track peices. As of right now the stairs have the railing placed on the transfer track side. Poor matinance men having to climb over railings to add another train to the track heh.

Why in the world are you worrying about stars? I sure wouldn't, especially since the only person I have to worry about liking what I do is me. the same applies here.
I don't. But it bothers me that I see them go up, have it go up, then down again. Especially since there is nothing of substance to really comment on, just a few model pics and a couple of trial and error pictures I took to show that I am actually doing something and looking for advice on how to improve it and such. If I had released this, I wouldn't care, or even if I was close to releasing it, then I wouldn't care.
And I am pretty sure one person voted out of spite, but I won't say who it is, because I don't want to start anything.

Screw the star system, bud.
My Gotham City park has been voted down to something like 2.5 stars... even after I specifically asked people to not vote on it since there's nothing much there yet...
It doesn't help that my brutal honesty around here has garnered me some 'enemies' (if you wish to call them that) that vote out of spite.
I don't even much look at the star system anymore.. it's flawed beyond reason. I look for names I recognize, and go by that.
Anyways, back on topic... what's the latest with the set? Will you be including a platform at an angle for underneath inverted lifts? Specifically, I'm asking about a 45 degree angle piece... there's a platform on the 90 in Jcat's Steelworx, but since you're tackling the tricky 45 set... I thought that I ought to bring that up so your set is as complete as possible.

Oh trust me, It was just irritated me being bothered by it. And now that I know who vote this down, it doesn't bother me anymore.
And yes, this set will include everything, Curved ones, Steep, regular, flat, and 45's for all of them.
Anyway, speaking of the 45's, I tried it again, and to no avail. I know I didn't do something right, but I think those will be pushed to the back burner for now, so I can get other things done, like getting better textures, lowering the poly count as much as humanly possible, some fine tuning things, and get all the curved ones correct also.
But, someone brought up a good idea from another forum, is the little "lip" thing at the ends of catwalks: http://www.rcdb.com/ig1.htm?picture=9 which is what I am going to do, seeing as it is extremely simple (I hope, things don't seem to have gone my way in the past)

PS: WHat if the train got stuck going stright down? Would need ladders err verticle catwalks to get off the coaster. (altho I have NEVER heard of a coaster getting stuck on a vertical section of track...
More seirous note ladders could be usefull for giga coasters I suppose? To connect the levels as the peeps have to climb down if it gets stuck at the top? Now I have senen that on youtube... thats great..

Ok, well, after some thinking, and looking at numerous pictures, I have decided that all pieces completed are to be redone. Plain and simple. I have noticed that they are a little awkward looking, and I want to strive for realism. And, I know that I can make these look 10 times better than before.
I do not expect this to take too long, but first, I am going to try and get the 45* catwalks and platforms done for Gravity's Six flags Gotham City, just because he seems uber desperate.
I know I haven't done too much, but most of it was trial and error, but now comes the final task of getting things to finally line up (mainly on the 45's) and making them look the best they can.

You aren't the only one....
Anyway, some news:
Slowly but surely things are progressing. I am trying a couple of different things for this. Though, like I said before, this shouldn't take too long, considering I know how things align and such, so.. yeah.
Here are 3 pictures of a new model, which is still the same size width and height wise, but the depth is now a whole .25 units wider, as to accommodate larger steps. The hand rails are a whole lot thinner, which makes them look better right now, but I won't have any clear indication until I can get these in game....
http://i15.tinypic.com/5zh51j6.jpg
http://i13.tinypic.com/66lnkmu.jpg
http://i13.tinypic.com/4p44sw2.jpg
So as you can see, it is a little different from before. The steps will come in later, as it is easier to group the textures together if they are off the object before hand.

Well said... those supports were made in the very, VERY early days of CS... and they were, and still are a masterpiece. Too often we find ourselves with a bunch of CS that is far too specific. Can't go using Star Trek scenery everywhere can you? Nope.. but something generic, that can work in any situation, and done beautifully has obviously stood the test of time. It's practically a necessity that you put those supports on your coasters now for fear of being shamed on the parks forum.
So yesh... show some respect to the fathers of CS, here.

I have just thought of something that would make a fantastic addition to this set. I don't know the first thing about modelling CS, but I imagine this would be quite easy to do.
How about making a ladder? It would come in very handy for things like rollercoaster brake runs that are high in the air, or maintenance/escape ladders on large buildings for extra realism. Something like this:

Ok, a few things. Those of course are platforms, and the texture on them is not going to be the real texture. I just needed something to separate the objects.
The handrails are the exact same sizes on both objects
The texture isn't complete
And altogether, the platforms and both sets of catwalks are the same size as one In-Game Square, though both look different.
And that wraps it up! I will get them in-game ASAP, meaning most likely tomorrow after school.

You will need 2 textures-1 for each. I presume your current texture is blue. You will need to make a new copy and make it purple (not sure of exact value). Then ,apply the blue texture to the main bit and the purple to the railings, and select 2 Colours for both textures in the importer.
These are taken from DasMatze's texture site, they are not mine.
Use this for the main part of the catwalks:

And this for the 2nd

Great work again.
Thank you.
Dude, you are my hero. this is exactly what i need!
Thanks!
Anyway, I'll try to get an update in as soon as possible. I just need to work on re-importing some of the objects, because for some odd reason, they got messed up. That, and the first task of the RCT3 Survivor contest started, and I need to get to work on some of that too.

This will honestly be the most helpful set to the community that's come out in a long time. The amount of coasters I want to build with diagonal lifts is annoying because of them looking unrealistic. Hope it's going well

GOT IT! I don't know if you know it, but Surfinoz (on his website) has a small pack. It is here:
http://www.surfingoz.koolhost.com/index.php?p=1_35_Components-for-SketchUp
Just follow the instructions.
Anyway, they are just small pieces (deletable) for reference of tracks, like a steep diagnal slope or a helix, etc.! I feel they can be a hUGE reference for your set!

I'm not quite sure, but you can still do that with Jcats steelworx. But I am considering doing this: http://img221.imageshack.us/img221/7022/alpengeist6oj0.jpg

Haha, thanks.
Ok, so since I have been asked the question of when this is going to be released several times now, I will put it out there.
I will release this as soon as it is done. I have most of the regular catwalks and such done, and all that is left is the turns, which are going to take some time to get done.
I am going to send the beta testers that I have chosen the set soon, without the turns, to make sure that they work to the greatest extent. And please do not ask to test the set, as I have already chosen the people I want to test this.
So, I will work to get an update as soon as I can, but most of my time right now, for the rest of the week is to school and the Rct3 Survivor contest.

http://i8.tinypic.com/4xza03q.jpg
The net looks better now that it has smaller holes.
I also came to the realization that (unless I am mistaken) there aren't any in game coasters that have steep lifts at 45 degrees. D'oh. So that makes 5 pieces that I spent some time on today utterly useless....
Anyway, update sooner or later.

No, I think he means that there are no diagonal steep lifts. That is true; I don't think that the designers programmed diagonal steep lifts into any of the tracks for whatever reason.
Anyway, it all looks great, ATH! I can't wait for this set, it will be very useful.

05-20-2007, 06:16 PM
I've just thought of something else that would be very useful in this set...
I know that when the track goes from level - 30 degrees, a normal 30 degree catwalk will fit in fine. But when going from 30 - 60 degrees, I'm pretty sure it wouldn't work if you tried to have a normal 30 degree catwalk and a normal 60 degree catwalk. They would intersect each other.
So, if you're going to have 60 degree catwalks for steep lift hills, it would be a good idea to have a catwalk that fits the track piece that goes from 30 - 60 degrees, like you would find at the bottom of most 60 degree lift hills.
I hope that made sense, it's hard to explain :p

I don't think it would be too complicated to do the 30-60 piece. Wouldn't it just be something like a third of a 30 piece, then two thirds of a 60 piece?
That was just a thought, I'm not trying to tell you what you should build, as it's your set I don't have a clue about making CS. I just hope you consider it because I think it would otherwise turn into one of those "I wish this set had...." moments, like Steelworx was with the angled or steep catwalks.
BTW, I just remembered - did you look into that ladder piece or is it not worth doing?

Look down.
Recolorable and alpha should not be mutally exclusive.
Uh, not sure exactly what that means, could you explain it a little better?
Looks cool, what happened to the rail on the left hand side in the second pic?
Oh, probably hit something in the gimp that cause it to do that.
Anyway, I had some free time, so I have been working slowly on the curved catwalks, while figuring out textures and such, and getting it all in the game. So, while this is just a flat plane, I got the alignment right!
http://i7.tinypic.com/4xzgqph.jpg
So there you go. The plane that I am going to use is only 12 faces, as many as the other steps used, so it should be good.
