View Full Version : My opinions of Silverfall.

First off, I apologize for the long post.

I bought Silverfall based on the review in PC gamer and my love of another game in the same vein. It stated that the interface was bad and I have to say I agree 100% with that. In fact I think the interface is horrible. The game itself is decent and I would normally say I could bypass the interface problems and still justify my expenditure of funds. But, then comes the freakin' horrible camera that has killed my character and my fun many MANY times (over 20). That really needs to be corrected in the next patch! I mean REALLY needs to be corrected! Having an option to lock on to your character would be great. To have it constantly follow your character from behind at a certain angle or even to have it snap to behind your character when the character moves would be helpful.

I was going to attempt to figure that out with the editor, but with all the horror stories I have read about the editor I think I will just stay away from that.

As for the interface. On the UK based forums there are links to pictures with a completely different interface. My question, as his was, and is Are the pictures fake and if not why didn't they go with that MUCH BETTER interface. Keyboard shortcuts would be a great addition to the game! As an example having a hot key set to allow you to switch from melee to ranged to magic by pressing it each time would be awesome! (Ex: pressing the Backspace key once would switch from melee to ranged. Pressing it again would switch it to magic. Pressing it once more would switch it back to melee.) Being able to hotkey several things around your movement keys will make it easier to play without lifting your hands to find keys elsewhere. I am left handed and my right is on the numpad, with any other game I am able to reset the keys to everything around the numpad, hence making it easier to play and quicker to react.

I got the previous link from the following post (Don't want you to think I am taking credit for this.)

Now I will go on with my other minor issues with the game. Tombstones are annoying at best. Do NOT die is what it tells me. The fact that you appear back at a city with no clothes on sucks. That was never the case with other games of the same vein. I do realize there is "insurance" and supposedly that allows for you to keep your equipment in some way. I just have yet to figure out how insurance works since I haven't been able to get it. I've died way too much to be able to figure it out. My first character got to 11th level and I still haven't been able to get insurance nor a chest (need to find another chest to be able to open my chest). I have yet been able to find a chest. The map needs a direction pointer on it. It is slightly annoying to open the map and just see a dot without a direction arrow noting which way we are facing.

I realize I may just suck at this game and that is very much a possibility, but I shouldn't be penalized for not being able to play it as well as the developers, who have gotten used to the game the way it is. Just my opinion.

With all that being said I would also like to say that not everything in this game is horrible. There is a definite fun potential if these issues with the camera and the interface are corrected. At least the camera issue. the interface ugliness and lack of use can be ignored at least it can for me. The fact you can play goblin is a plus. I love goblins. Even though I have yet to play one in this game yet. My personal rule Always play a Billy BadA$$ character (ala troll) first to see the difficulty of the game. I have played a troll and an Elf as of now. With all my issues with this game you would think I hate it but I don't. I like it and I want to love it. I just can't get past these glaring issues. The graphics for this game are unique and adds to the character of the game. the Nature or Technology branches also make the game interesting and well worth playing. The good physics help as well.

So to sum up. This game is REAL close to being a classic. If the developers see fit to listen to the community and fix the "problems" with this game they will have a sure fire hit on their hands and us fans may even see a sequel! Yippee!

Thanks for reading this long post.

Agreed. The camera is the most annoying issue with this game.

Not quite right. Diablo 1 and 2 did the same thing. And they didn’t offer any sort of insurance at all.

To get insurance you need to talk to the insurance agent (what’s-his-name?) and recover his safe. Then you can stash things in it and you can, for a not-so-modest amount of gold, avoid loosing your stuff when you die.

I just need to point out that there is an arrow for your quests on the minimap. you just have to have the side quest you want to do set as active.

Hit Q, go to the 'secondary' tab, and click the one for finding the chest.

Thanks for the reply. I know about the arrow on the minimap, but I was talking about the one on the big map. The one you see when pressing M. I guess I should have mentioned that. As for finding the Chest. I have yet to do so. The dying is discouraging me, though I refuse to give up. I'll just play in short bursts.

On the main map, there's an indicator as to exactly where your current quest is at...

True, but what I meant is which way you are facing. I see only a dot.

Nope. You got it wrong mrgrimm.

There can be up to three arrows on the minimap. The center one is the one showing where you are facing but on the rim of the minimap there is an arrow with a golden center (unsure of the color) that points to the direction of the Main quest's next step. Also, if you select a secondary quest, an arrow with a green center will appear, showing you the way to it.

I hope you'll notice next time ;)

I hope you'll notice next time That little saying bothers me. Seems rude to me, but I'll let it slide. If you read up a little bit you will see that I stated I was not talking about the minimap. I am and was talking about the main map. The map that shows up when you hit the M key. It currently just shows a little blue dot showing your current position. It does not show an arrow to indicate which direction you are facing.

I quote myself

"Thanks for the reply. I know about the arrow(s) on the minimap, but I was talking about the one on the big map. The one you see when pressing M."

[I added the s after arrow for this post]

I hope that clears things up.

Anyways.. I have figured things out and gotten comfortable with the camera. (though I still think it should be fixed.) I got life insurance (finally) and as much as I had died before, it is really expensive, but I am willing to pay it to have my booty.... as in stuff....not booty, booty... ;). it's amazing how the expensiveness of the life insurance can teach you the value of RUN AWAY!

You may have already realized this but you don't actually need arrows on the main map as it is always oriented with North at the top. I know this sounds obvious, as it was a standard we all learned in early elementary school; but I found the other shortcomings of the interface made me overlook such simple things.
