Cedar Point Coaster Closed After Crash, Injuries
May 26, 2007 08:15 PM

Magnum XL-200 will stay closed until park officials investigate the incident.

SANDUSKY -- Cedar Point amusement park has closed one of its roller coasters after a crash injured three people. The incident happened around 11:00am Saturday morning on the Magnum XL-200 coaster.

News 11 has learned a train loaded with passengers was completing its trip when it rolled through the braking system and hit another train that was stopped and waiting to enter the loading station. Two people were treated for minor injuries in the park's first aid station, while another person on the train went to Firelands Regional Medical Center after suffering an asthma attack.

Officials still aren't sure how the collision happened. Coaster operators estimate the train was going about 10mph when it hit the other.

"We closed the ride immediately," said Robin Innes, a spokesperson for Cedar Point. "We are doing our review, and it will stay closed until we finalize that and have a complete review of what happened."

Both trains were damaged, but it appeared to be superficial fiberglass damage.

According to Cedar Point's web site, the Magnum is a traditional "out and back" coaster that features 5,106 feet of track that winds its way over Soak City and along the Lake Erie shoreline. Opened in 1989, it was one of the fastest roller coasters in the world, zooming riders along at 72mph. In 2006, the Magnum XL-200 was voted No. 3 in the "Best Steel Roller Coaster in the World" category in a poll conducted by "Amusement Today."

In 2006, Cedar Point says more than 1.8 million riders rode the Magnum.

The collision happened on the same day Cedar Point opened its newest roller coaster, "Maverick." The opening of that coaster was delayed several weeks after the ride's manufacturer, IntaRide, found a "heartline roll" in the track put too much strain on the track and the coaster's cars.

A heartline roll is a roller coaster element in which the train twists, but the riders' hearts stay roughly in line with the center of the curve. It was supposed to be one of Maverick's signature maneuvers.

Crews removed Maverick's heartline roll, and replaced it with an "S-curve." The "S-curve" will not include an inversion. Nothing else will change.

After the new track was installed, Cedar Point says Maverick underwent additional pre-opening testing, then the Ohio Department of Agriculture's Amusement Ride Safety Division inspected the ride. After that inspection was completed and the ride was licensed, Maverick opened to the public.

In addition, IntaRide, the ride manufacturer, has recently revised the height requirement for Maverick. Riders must now be 52 inches or taller to ride.

Cedar Point is one of the world's largest amusement parks by ride count, and currently holds the world record for most roller coasters with 17. The park also has two water parks, two marinas, and several hotels. It is the flagship park for its parent company, Cedar Fair.

When it rains it pours! Cedar Point was having such a good track record for not having injuries. I guess the odds were against them. Probably still have the best track record out of the major park chains. I hope they isolate the problem and Magnum can be returned to service as soon as safe as possible. I love Magnum!

Things are always bound to happen, to any park. They are very lucky/fortunate, and keep up well so that it doesn't happen very often. It happens to every park and every park chain every so often.

^^ No one has still ever died at Cedar Point due to negligence of the park, so yes they still have one of the best track records around.

Hmm, I'd bet if it was a Six Flags they wouldn't have mentioned it.

Even yet, Cedar Point has an almost sparkling track record, especially when compared to Six Flags.

Just to add a few more cents, we checked in to Breakers about the time the accident occurred. We didn't know about it at the time. When we first entered the park, the little ambulance thingy was parked outside the Magnum exit, and a couple people got into it. I didn't think much of it, since people get carted away on a pretty regular basis in a park filled with thousands of people.

Anyway, I took some pictures of the two trains in "body bags" a few hours later, and later took some pictures that didn't really turn out, of a crew removing the trains after 10:30 PM. I'll try to post what I got after I get some sleep.

Sunday and Monday, Maggie 'rode on' with one train, and 1+ hour wait... On Sunday morning as I rode the Power Tower, I noticed an entire Magnum train parked in the area next to the building by the Corkscrew(Sorry, don't know what it is). On Monday, rode Power Tower again, and noticed only one car in the same spot. Don't know what that means, but just thought I'd throw that info out there...

Did they put the 2nd train back on?

Didn't the same thing happen to CS at DCA not too long ago?

Nope. Still running just one train. I only managed one ride on Magnum during my 3-day visit this weekend...

From what I heard, they were blaming it on wet brakes.

It's not the first "fender bender" at Cedar Point, and I'm sure it won't be the last. Unfortunately, mechanical issues can happen. From what I can tell, this issue was rather minor. I really don't know that it deserved to make the news.

You have to understand that Cedar Fair is quite different than Six Flags. At Six Flags, the bumps are expected daily. At Cedar Fair it is an extremely rare occurance, so it's DEFINATELY news!

Oh, believe me, I know that Cedar Fair is different from Six Flags. I've been complaining to Six Flags for years about their shoddy operations.

I was pleased to see that things looked quite a bit better at Great Adventure last Sunday, but it isn't enough to convince me that Six Flags is on the right track, it's just enough to convince me that they deserve another look. During my travels to 182 different amusement parks, I've found that the best of parks can have an off day, and the worst of parks can have a good day. While quite a bit can be learned from one day, it really isn't sufficient for giving an accurate assessment of a park.

Meanwhile, 2007 marked my 38th consecutive year of visiting Cedar Point (so far, been there for 4 days this year), plus I worked at the park for 4 summers (1986-1988, 1990). I've also been a Cedar Fair shareholder since 1990 because I firmly believe in the quality of their operations. But, the people running the parks are still human. As a result, mistakes will happen. If the mistakes happen repeatedly, that's an issue, and, in my opinion, is then newsworthy. But, if it's an isolated minor slip up, then I feel it's about as newsworthy as a bus stalling on the freeway in Detroit.

I feel it's about as newsworthy as a bus stalling on the freeway in Detroit.

That is newsworthy, because it would mean the bus is actually running in Detroit.

Would that be with or without marshalls on them?

So there's a chance it'll be open on June 3rd?

Well, a slightly more extreme accident was AT's Runaway Mine Train last year. That only reopened last month I think. I doubt the tests & correcting took that long.

It could be anything, it depends on the tests they're conducting and when they want it to reopen.

Magnum reopened the next morning. The two trains involved in the accident, however, were not in use, since they need some repair. From what I've heard, all the damage was to the fiberglass -- no structural damage to the trains. So, all three trains should be back in operation once the fiberglass repairs have been made. In the meantime, the ride has been running with one train.

Ya I was at CP on Memorial day and they day after.

Magnum was open but ran only 1 train operations as the other trains are repaired.
