And the moment you've all been waiting for...Round 1!

In the first round of the Battle of the Forums 2007, the Los Perro-Calientes created the challenge.

Challenge A
Team Creations vs Third Eye Designs

The requirements:

1) The park theme must be set on a bayou, swamp, or marsh (which means lots of water and grime and old trees).
2) The park must have a spooky, or eerie feel to it (old architecture, fog, spooky trees, ruins, zombie hands in the water).
3) The park must have a canoe boat ride inside the main body of water of the park.
4) The park must have included a "haunted" maze (you may interpret this however you like).
5) The park map must be 80x60
6) The main attraction of the park must be a glider coaster.
7) There must be one dark ride set inside an old, abandoned home.
8) Three restaurants must be included.

************

Challenge B
Roller Toasters vs Improbable Belfry

The requirements:

1) The theme is Under the Sea.
2) Actual water may not be used. The underwater effect must be achieved using scenery only (this does not mean you have to enclose the entire park in some sort of blue structure. You can just build the park normally, but throw in certain details that make it look underwater, such as lot's of coral plants (instant wood, anyone?) and stuff like that. Don't complicate your lives TOO much).
3) Only ONE water ride is to be used (no more, no less).
4) 75 X 75 map size.
5) There must be at least two fully enclosed flat rides (meaning, at least a roof or shelter over the ride)
6) All coasters must have custom supports (that doesn't mean ONLY steelworx, you can mix scenery or use coaster tracks as supports, too)
7) Park must be split into 3 distinct areas. (no more, no less). (Examples: Each area could be named after a different sea creature with it's own coaster, or something like "Mermaid Pointe, Lobster Rock, and Poseidon's Lair; or each area could be a different area of the ocean such as Coral Reef, Ocean Forest, and underwater caves).
8) Each area must have it's own restaurant.

The deadline is:
4pm PST June 22nd
Any later and you will have points deducted.

"3) Only ONE water ride is to be used" Could you define 'water ride' please. Are they the 'coasters' in the category 'Flumes & Water tracks' or does a Pounding Surf count as one as well?

-Nuclear Fish-
06-09-2007, 05:58 AM
Also for the only one water ride to be used thing, can we use more than one water ride, but not intending the others to actually be rides? Using them for scenery or ride supports for example?

Jerr_Oen
06-09-2007, 06:12 AM
Anything used as scenery doesn't count as a ride, imo. It's just that using a flume ride as scenery, would include 'actual water.' Right?

-Nuclear Fish-
06-09-2007, 07:48 AM
But not if you don't use the water from the flume as scenery. If you just kept it in a tunnel or something...

I have another question. You say the park has to themed 'under the sea' - does this mean the whole park, or can parts, such as the entrance, be 'above' the sea?

DreamTheater2005
06-09-2007, 11:34 PM
No, the whole park has to seem like it's under water.

Jerr_Oen
06-10-2007, 03:26 AM
^ You're not making much sence.

If, same example, the entrance is 'above' sealevel and you 'dive' down towards the park, it only enhences the theme. Other example: How about a coaster popping 'out of the sea' here and there, like a dolphin or whale. If done properly it can truly give peeps the idea of being underwater.

edit for extra stuff: The rules:
1) The theme is Under the Sea.
2) Actual water may not be used. The underwater effect must be achieved using scenery only (this does not mean you have to enclose the entire park in some sort of blue structure. You can just build the park normally, but throw in certain details that make it look underwater, such as lot's of coral plants (instant wood, anyone?) and stuff like that. Don't complicate your lives TOO much).

These two rules are the only ones concerning Nuke's question. The second rule is just a scenery limitation. The first rules only tells us what theme to use, it doesn't dictate us how to colour that theme. So obviously we can build stuff 'above' sealevel. If it wouldn't be alowed, the rules should've said so in the first place. Now you're just making up requirement number 9. I'm not planning on conforming to rules you just make up along the line.

Basicly I could even build a park in an 'underwater museum' with rides and restaurants in 'exposition bassins' as long as the theme is Under the Sea, without breaking any rules.

Janitor 06
06-10-2007, 03:45 AM
^That's a great idea, Jerr_Oen.
Why do you guys all want to use particle effects for water? I don't see much waterfalls under water...
There are better underwater particle in nuke's particle effects... *blub*

Jerr_Oen
06-10-2007, 03:50 AM
But there are underwater waterfalls, in the north of the Atlantic Ocean cooled down (so it becomes heavier) water falls down en masse, creating the pump for the Gulf Stream.

I wasn't talking about the water particles in my previous post.

Also for the only one water ride to be used thing, can we use more than one water ride, but not intending the others to actually be rides? Using them for scenery or ride supports for example?

The ONE water ride must be a working ride. You MAY use water rides as SCENERY and RIDE SUPPORTS (as stated in the custom support rule).

Does our park have to be a working park or can it be an abandonded/ defunct park?

Um, it must be functional. That's the point of these challenges.
Does a swimming pool count as actual water??

YES. No pools. This is a theme park not a water park.
I have another question. You say the park has to themed 'under the sea' - does this mean the whole park, or can parts, such as the entrance, be 'above' the sea?

I said don't complicate your lives. BUT, there are NO said rules stating you may not have parts above the ocean (after all there is no real ocean). Just keep in mind, the general theme is UNDER the Sea. So keep the the parts above water to a minimum.

Again, interpret the theme how you like, as long as you don't break any of the said rules.

Also, Nuke's Particle Effects are not allowed. They do count as real water in my eyes (as they are meant to represent fountains, which consist of real water). However, bubbles may be used.

Sorry I wasn't here to answer these earlier. But I'm always away for the weekends.

-Nuclear Fish-
06-10-2007, 11:12 AM
Also, Nuke's Particle Effects are not allowed.

You mean just the water ones? Are the bubbles alright to use?

EDIT: I see you've edited it, so I'm guessing it is just the fountains and waterfalls.

Milkdud

I edited my post.

edit: EDIT: I see you've edited it, so I'm guessing it is just the fountains and waterfalls.

Correct.

edit2: Sean asked me this question via PM, so let me make it clear:
Questions for our challenge.

Does it have to be a working park usable by guests or can it be an abanded park.

Can the buildings look as though there not used/abanded or do they have to be usable working buildings?

And does the coaster have to be a working coaster. I.E can have parts missing to make it look old abandoned ect

Cheers Shaun

The park MUST be a working park, as in peeps must be able to access the park and coasters. Not all buildings have to be functional though, as real theme parks do have buildings that are strictly for show/decoration purposes.

Guess who got back early from his trip?

Wow. Good challenges! It's a shame there not hard enough.

Well, this is the first challenge. If we made it any harder, the challenges would only get ever harder...by the last round the parks would have been impossible! The first challenge sets the pace. If it was too difficult, the other teams would have no reason to make the next challenges any easier...they'd only get harder.

AND btw, I thought the Under the Sea challenge would be uber hard...glad I was sort of wrong? [i have some killer ideas for the theme too....it's a shame I can't give them out ;]]

No, you can't just build a facade and hide the ride behind it. There must be an entire house, with a ride inside of it.

I have another question - for the 'fully enclosed' falt rides, how enclosed does it have to be? Does the whole thing have to be covered? And if so, can certain parts of the shelter have gaps in it? So, for example, could the shelter just be four walls with a 'cage' sort of steelworx structure on top, even though there are gaps in the steelworx?

So yeah, things have gone kind of bad for us... but what we do have looks amazing, and even if I have to stay up all night tonight and tomorrow I WILL get our park finished, so Improbable Belfry, don't think this is going to be an easy win.

Since it's the only game I play on the computer at the moment, I never take it out of the drive. The guy that's fixing it told me that either the disk wasn't manufactured right, or that by never taking the disk out of my drive it caused the disk to be slightly deformed. Eventually the constant spinning of the deformed disk in the drive shattered it.

I know for a fact we don't have two of the requirements. So that's already 10 points we've lost... so you're not alone.

^ As I've said, there's no need, the deadlines already passed. I've sent our park in.

Anyway, I'm off to bed now, so I guess I'll have to wait until morning to see the parks. Good luck everyone.

Poekie, I'm so sorry you had to do everything alone. I really had to go to bed, as I've stayed up late all week and my mom was gettin' angry...
Do you have the canoe ride and the three restauraunts? If so, I think we have all goals. :D

Yes I have! I'm curious what you think about your "restauraunt", go ahead and download it fron the general forum thread. And it's not a big deal you had to go of to bed, I had planty of fun on my own :D I suddely had to finish half the park or so, but I think it turned out "decent" :p

Yeah... decent... :D You did a great job, finishing our park, making pics, and putting up the park file in about 2 1/2 hours! I love the second pic, the haunted mansion with the windmill.
But we're losing 16-0 :haha: :downcast: :( :sour:
I downlaoded all four parks, gonna look at them in a sec.
