A little tip for anyone who started with custom scenery.
You should first have a look in the complete list of released custom scenery:
http://www.rct-theme-world.de/rct-liste/complete-list.htm
Then you will see, that we have two simlar sets like this:
One is made by Phil:
http://img355.imageshack.us/img355/2530/supportsingame9gj.jpg
There exist also a second set with footers, but I can't remember, who made it. If anyone knows this set, please post a link, because I need this entry also for the CS-list.

I am aware of that , but are you aware of the fact that there are no corners in that set ?? or supports for curved pieces of track ?? or banked pieces ??
And i, also know that this set is going to countain, them.
( i also did a quick caculation , and came @ 167 supports models - from slightly inclined to large steep curved and banked corners - , currently i have 4 done ... )

This sounds great! So you'll be doing different heights of the triangle pieces? I'd be especially interested if you did some short ones like 1H, 2H, 3H ect. I've tried doing some supports like this with alpha textures before, but I never got it to work. Can't wait to see more.

So what? And we have 800 Space Mountains, 3 sets of Catwalks, star panels up the wahzoo, etc... From what I can tell, this will be a lot more extensive then the other versions anyway.

Cut one of the sides out, left on one model, right on the other, so that there is no "overlap" and it will save poly's too. All you need to do is delete one of the ends.

Thanks , for all the replies some helped me allot during construction , and others .. well .. they didn't helped , ooow never mind , lets get on to the pictures.
A footer + 3h box ( the footer does go deep into the ground, so when the terrain is sloped , the supports don't float. )\/

These really look nice, but I have to admit I'm a little leery about the possible high number of polys when used to fully deck out a complete coaster.
That's not to knock your work - it's VERY well done, you deserve a huge round of applause for it. I'm just wondering if it's possible to try something that more closely resembles the in-game wooden supports (even borrowing the same texture) but just adds all the missing pieces without racking up a huge number of faces.

well , first of all , Thanks :D
second , this is my first attampt in cs ever , i am not done with the texture , and still learning , but the high number of faces is indeed a big problem , not even speaking about problems with the importer , which i have never used before.
And useing ingame textures + style kinda gives me a bad feeling, because the only reason i am doing this , is because the ingame texture look horrible when place next to CS.

Nice job this should be an awsome set.
My only recommandation though will be to make sure you make them recolorble.
s for the supports in game the reason they dont look that good is because as far as I can tell there done by using alpha textures which saves alot of polygons and helps lag but in return they dont look as good.

OMG a thousand ... wtf , so then you will have a 9h corner, so 3 x a 3h = 3000 polys , + 3 sloped supports on the inside ( 3000 ) and 3 sloped on the outside ... ( 3000 )
Thats 9000 poly's for one corner , haveing 20 corners would mean at least 180000 poly's .. :eek::eek::bulb::bulb:

Spanky, the other support set is made by Tycoon10 (or something), and they are only structures made out of Shyguys Alpine sets - not custom scenery.
Have you concidered also texturing these as a steel texture, so we can make hybrid supports? Not saying you have to, just a suggestion, but I could imagine, that it would give many, many, many objects in this pack that way.
So far it looks top notch. Can we perhaps see some imported items? Thank you, Style.

Agreed. As for your textures, make them a 64X64 PNG. They are stored as smaller image types in the game.
A couple of helpful hints.
Delete faces on top and bottom of Stackable objects.
Curves work just as well with 5 sides instead of 6.
On the curve, put the wooden bar to the left or right of the corner, so that you don't have extra faces that way.
Delete any excess faces you don't need. Try and delete a line from somewhere, and if it deletes more than you wanted, just undo it. Trial and error is the key factor here.

thanks for the hints !
The 6 sides are needed because also the most wide corners are going to have them with 6 so the whole wooden construction looks slim.
And i just deleted some lines , and brought back the faces of that corner to 460 , just by deleting some lines.
and about the wooden bars , i am not sure yet , i think i am going to finish the set first , then import it , the make the changes , edit the faces , and then chek if i can delete any bars. ;)
And can someone help me with the importer .. cause i can't get it to work ... ( pm me )

Spanky, in this case I have to agree. Phil's seem to be welded, so any properly unwelded replacement is better :)
I'd just like to add, I did these way back in the start of scenery making. I was totally rubbish back then, and also, just another thing to say is that nobody knew about the unwelded and welded advantages back then.
Also what's up with everyone using sketchup I always thought that was considered a bad program to use?
surfingoz
06-18-2007, 07:37 AM
^^^now sketchup has become very easy with the script belgabor wrote, since Sketchup is very easy it has become very popular. The biggest advantage that I have come across is that alignment is so easy in sketchup thanks to the placement boundaries that belgabor created, it makes creating CS very quick and accurate.
Back on track now, if you are having trouble with the importer then PM me and tell me what errors you are getting or post pictures of all your settings etc. and I should be able to point you in the right direction.

yeah , surfingoz , also explained it to me in PM , but still i think it will take me about 3 months to learn the importer , and i would rather spend that time on buidling more pieces for the set ..
You'll need to learn it eventually anyway, load up one of the sid files and untick flag 33 (I think it's 33 not got the importer on this pc to check and I'm just going out...) to remove collision detection.

Yes set all unknows to 0.... the first 2... make the firss # 0...
unckeck all flags
size and position... set them to 0
and for the size.... well you turn for ex. set the size in squares to 3x 3y and so on.... of you have one thats 2x 2y then put it in the 2 boxes... then below that you will set the position... 1 rct sq 1/4 sq 1/2 sq ext.... put 1 sq...

On side: Select "Fix Orientation" in the matrix window (its in the mesh window of the OVL-Converter).
Beams invisible: Be sure every face is on the right side. In SU you have a view, where you can see which face is inside and which is outside. Every face has to be outside.
Wrong position: When you create a Full-Tile-Template in SU and select 1/4 Tile in the importer, its offset. So select Full tile or allign it in SU to an 1/4 Tile.
Collision: Try to change all unknowns to 0.
BTW: Would be even more useful, if the texture would be recolourable.

Are you sure you did the fix orientation? You must always do that when importing sceanery.
Also, I don't think you really need "Group" on the importer enabled. When I was importing, I was told to disable that. But you'd be better of askign dasmatzes, I still can't import a wall correctly :p.
wabigbear
06-21-2007, 12:29 PM
"Location within the theme" is the overall name for your set...like "Wagi's Useless Building Set". This remains the same for all items in your set.
"Group" this is the main icon for a group of like items within your theme - say "walls". For instance the icon in the #1 spot on my icon sheet could be a picture of a bear with "Wagi's Useless Building Set-Walls" written on it. The icon would be x01/y01. The string name also says "Wagi's Useless Building Set-Walls". This group setting remains the same for all individual items in the set that are of the same group (like all walls, or all objects, etc., or even a mixture of items if your group is made up that way).
"Scenery" is the icon for ONE SPECIFIC ITEM in this group. Say for instance my set has a purple wall. I have added a icon of a purple wall to the #2 spot on my icon sheet. The icon then would be x02/y01. The string name should be "Purple Wall".
I've only just started CS, but these selections have worked for everything I have created and all three set's I've made so far.

The texture could be because some of the faces are reversed in Sketchup. You can quickly check to see if that's true by opening the object in sketchup, and then under View setting the Face Style to Monochrome. Faces that are correct will be white, faces that are reversed will be light blue. To fix it just click on the blue face, click your right mouse button and select Reverse Faces from the dropdown menu.

ok , i'll try but i have another problem , everytime after i have made a theme file ( common and unique ) and placed it in the style/ themed map and it didn't worked , i deleted it again.
but when i run the game and go to scenery there are 5 maps saying "wooden coaster support pack" and evertime i excidentaly hoover over them with my mouse i get the 'no siv: for sid:' warning ... WTF :bulb:
Save the sid file again....and it should work.
Also the importer has an install sceery set option for it just use that instead of manually copying it all.

yeah , but the problem is , that there are no more sid: files , i deleted them all , and all of the other files that i placed in there. I even tried to empty out the whole map , and then there were still 5 ingame sets saying "wooden coaster support pack' :bulb:

But it does not seem verry logical because( in SU )the model is 16.1 x 16.1 meters so thats why i took 4x4 squares , why should i the fill in 1x1 ??

when you install the theme do you after trying it go into C:/atari/rollercoaster tycoon 3/style/theme and delete the folder?
If not... they stay there until you do and every time you install a new theme(with same name) it overwrites the old one with a folder inside of it.
so you may have a folder named wooden coaster support with 5 folders with same name inside it.

Ok I finally got the importer to work :D
But no pics , because after some good thought about what ATH said , and after seeing the mrPKI coaster tunnels , I have now sawn the Light !
First of all , I will quit doing tunnels , because they are already in mrPKI set , i they will be compatible ;)
Second , the models will now be much more slimm , more versitle , and have less poly's.
And third , I am now looking for a good recolorable texture .. I need 2 of them , one for the conrete footers , and one for the wood.
Pictures will come when I have good textures ;)
btw. does someone have the mesures for steep and average slopes for SU ?? thanks
MrPKI
06-29-2007, 11:52 AM
Average slopes go up 2H or 2 units and steeps go up 8H or 8 units. Glad to hear you got the importer to work, and I'm looking forward to seeing more of this set.

beam - 1h - 2h - 3h
box - 1h - 2h - 3h
crossbeam 3h ( will make a 1h - 2h - 6h )
horizontal beam

what about having a bottom piece that already is attatched to a footer?
cause sometimes footers dont always line up that great on some parts.
just a suggestion
This is where an extensive alpha-mapped set might come in handy for the woodies. That way you could halve your poly count by getting rid of unseen and un-needed polygons. I haven't worked in the importer for this game, but from my experience in other 3d programs, if you can fake the model by texturing, it's highly recommended.
Very, Very nice, I wouldn't use alphamaps for this myself, might save some polys but there isn't that many in them anyway, probably like 8 polys in the vertical parts?

I am making footers for all the types of corners + some footer for the square ones ( those will also be offset for the supports which are lowered into the ground )

To be honest .. i have no clue of what you both are talking about ... it's sound really usefull and extremely difficult ...
Now for the update , i have imported almost all of the models i made so far ( some aren't in the picture because of allignment problems .. )
this are all the finished pieces :
box 1h,2h,3h
horizontal beam
Vertical beam 1h,3h
crossbeam 1h,2h,3h,6h
angled supports 3h,6h
( note that these are the working pieces , not all the pieces )
http://img263.imageshack.us/img263/993/shot0313cy6.jpg
as you can see , they are fully recolorable

This is what i build with it , in 5 minutes ;)
http://img165.imageshack.us/img165/3740/shot0315lb4.jpg
I still need to make some connecting squares for those crossbeams, and as you can see , i used the supportkiller from The_Cook's 'trackbeds' as i don't know how to make them ( yet )

Looks nice so far. Two things:
- You should make pieces to enlarge big supports without overlapping. What I mean is make versions of the big sloped support and the square supports that lack the left or right part so they attack to a existing full one.
- Your sloped parts are wrong. You made the end the same diameter as the vertical or horizontal beams, but that leads to a wrong diameter "during" the slope. You need to model them in a way that the diameter is correct, but the ends vary depending on the slope angle and what they attach to. The problem is plainly visible if you look closely at your steep sloped support, the beam diameter changes over the length.

wow thanks for those tips !
For the supports , i think of making just pieces for one support ( center beams , and a side )
as for those angled beams .. i didn't even noticed yet , so thanks !
and i found that the spacing for the diagonal beams was a placement problem , so i am going to work on those things and then report back ;)

And i have no clue yet on when t will be released , might be a few weeks , could be a month or 2 .. i have no idea ..
Anyway , i am now working on some corner pieces , and i notice the beams look a bit thin indeed .. does anyone know how big the beams are that are used in reall coasters ???
Because they now are 20x20 cm beams but i think of making all the vertical beams 40x40 (hight x wide ) , the horizontal 30x40 and the crossbeams also 30x40..
I'll keep you updated ,

Man, I thought of making a set like this. It would have been completely different from this. No big pieces, only beams. I've made lots of pictures, but... doesn't matter...
I can give you some good tips because I thought of the problems that would appear while making this set.
First of all we all need an invisible support killer for wooden coasters. These little dots look like stars...
Then, please change the texture. You're working with SketchUp so I can't really tell you options to set to make the object look best... I've got one. Just PM me and you'll get it (if you want ;) )
Then I'm convinced of the idea of single objects. Single footers, single beams, etc. I can show you some pictures of what I've done so far (PM) if you want. This way I count 33 pieces. You could save them as structures ;)
I'm really sad now... :(

I'm gonna be the good cop here. CS makers rarely make requests simply for the sake of doing them for others. Most sets are made by the user, for the user, and are released as gifts to the community. Stop waiting, since michielhe said s/he isn't working on it.
