That may be true but he was dumb enough to risk getting hit by actually going in the water. The truth is Universal probably shut down the ride immediately after he got in. They do have security cameras that can catch this kind of thing.

My first year working at CP, I was working on Wicked Twister. We had to shut down the ride because a kid jumped over the fence surrounding the back spike to retrieve his hat that his buddy threw in there joking around. Thankfully, the ride was not in motion at the time and we saw it happen and prevented what could have been tragic... but, c'mon...

I straight up asked him if his life wasn't as important as his baseball hat... his response? "It's my lucky hat, man"

If the guard did in fact know about, but did nothing, he should be fired and the kid should be banned from the park for life. I know some of you probably think that's a bit harsh, but pulling some idiotic stunt like that could endanger others as well as the moron who did it.

In 1998, there was a 24 year old man who was killed at Paramount's Great America trying to retrieve his wife's hat from under the Top Gun coaster. A passenger's foot struck the man. She was hospitalized with a severely broken right leg. There were "Do Not Enter" signs posted on the fencing around the ride, but it was stated that the man did not understand English. Personally, I would have thought the existence of the fences would have been enough to indicate that the area should not be entered, whether the language is understood or not.

So, the remarkable stupidity of retrieving a hat (or other item) in a coaster area might not only injure or kill the stupid person, it might also injure or kill riders who are innocent of the stupidity.
