View Full Version : [HLP] Making More than one Texture Recolourable

For some CS that I'm making, it's got to be recolourable, but two parts of the model need to be recolourable seperately. The model was of a tent, with stripes on (2 different colours for the stripes), so I wanted you to be able to change the colour of the first, third, and fifth as one recolourable option and then the second, fourth and sixth as the second reclourable option.
Call me stupid if you want, but I just couldn't work out how to set this up in the importer!! I thought of (In the modeller) loading up the texture, then applying it to what I want as the first recolour and then load the texture again and applying to the other recolourable option. Saving it, and then loading up the same texture twice in the importer. Tried that and got the 'Bad index' error in RCT3 which from experience, I am pretty sure is because of using the same texture twice.
Any help on this would be much appreciated, I just can't work this out myself!
Anyway, thanks for reading,
Jonny
Take a red/blue texture, load it, select two colors and apply it to the object.

Ah, didn't think it would be like that, none of the tutorials seemed to go over it. Thanks Errt :)

I made a striped tent wall by using two different recolorable textures, and grouping each separately in Sketchup, then in the importer set the two textures as recolorable and proceeded as normal, coasterman20076
Yes, but then you need a single face for each stripe, don't you?

Yes I did, which wouldn't work for Jonny's texture, but might for coasterman if he's making something that can be designed that way.

What Wagi is talking about would work, wouldn't it?!
That's the model, the red bit is what I want as recolourable option 1 and the blue, recolourable option 2! At the moment- when I make it recolourable, I get the two bucket icons on the piece (So it's set up for two recolourable options) but when I change the colour in the first bucket, it changes the colour VERY slightly (Still very white though), that's the whole model it changes the colours for. And the second bucket does nothing!!
I will keep experimenting, and spend another few hours on this! LOL
Yes, in this case, wagi's idea is the better alternative. I thought you wanted the single faces to be striped.

I dont know what programs you use. But you need to cut out the part of the texture, which shall have another color. Then you bring it to a new layer and color it in another color (in Photoshop: Image > Adjustments > Hue/Saturation > Check "Colorize" > Move the Hue bar > OK).

Jonny - I had a similar question a few weeks back, and Vodin referred me to THIS TUTORIAL (http://www.vodhin.net/RCT3Community/e107_plugins/content/content.php?content.53).
Scroll down until you see the graphic with the three color selections. When using a PNG texture, if you assign the appropriate color to the selection, it works better. The tut explains it better.

Yeah, what Wagi linked you to is what you want to use.
'Course, if you're handy enough, you could use a texture set up like this:

and the end result would be:

Ok, going back on task, just colorize the texture all red, all green, or all blue. R-1 G-2 B-3 in terms of which color option to use. So using red and green textures, you'd select Two Colors for recolorablity.

red, green, blue? How does that work? The colortable for recolorable textures is blue (1), pink (2) and yellow (3):

The latest version of the Importer has done away with all the hassles of dealing with Indexed color texture files. You can now just use true RGB. If you use a simple texture like aroundthehorn suggested, you just make sure that one color has ONLY red in it and no green or blue using Image > Adjustments > Levels... in Photoshop. Belgabor's page has a nice instruction set on this: http://belgabor.vodhin.net/importer/index.html#recol
It seems that this would be the easiest way and save on file size a bit. Use one texture at 64x64, then just UV map the required faces to the correct colors.

Not sure how it works, but it's much easier IMO. For any texture, all you have to do (in the gimp) is go to Layers/Colors/Color Balance and set all values (shadows, midtones, and highlights) to either 100 red, green, or blue and then set the colors you didn't use to -100.
Of course, that's for a basic recolorable, but playing around with levels of any color will change the results, or adjusting the brightness/contrast will do the same thing.
Plus, with everything I've done, it works 100% of the time.
