TOKYO - A recovery in electronics sales offset losses in video games and helped boost Sony's profit for the July-to-September quarter more than 40-fold over the same period a year ago.

Sony Corp. saw $646.7 million in group net profit for the second quarter — or 73.72 yen, up from 1.68 billion yen in last year's second quarter. Quarterly sales jumped 12.3 percent to $18.27 billion.

For the fiscal half overall, Sony posted a $1.23 billion profit, about three times a year earlier. First half sales climbed 12.8 percent to $35.61 billion.

The major sore spot in Sony's results was in its game unit, where red ink worsened from a year earlier, partly because of losses related to its PlayStation 3 home console. The machine has been struggling against Nintendo's Wii.

Sony shares dipped 1.4 percent to $45 shortly before earnings were announced Thursday.

Sony, the entertainment and electronics company behind Walkman portable players and "Spider-Man" movies, has been restructuring in recent years to regain profitability in its core electronics operations, which includes televisions and digital cameras.

Those efforts appeared to be bearing fruit as sales in electronics jumped 20.7 percent and profit in the division surged about 13 times to nearly $939,000.

The Japanese electronics maker also reversed fortunes in its film unit, returning it to the black for the second quarter with the box office success, "Superbad," and cuts in marketing costs.

Sales in the gaming unit rose 42.9 percent, boosted by sales of the PlayStation 3, which hit stores last year. But losses in that division deepened to $848.2 million as Sony continued to sell the games for less than it cost to produce them. Sony hopes the unit will be profitable by the fiscal year ending March 2009, said Chief Financial Officer Nobuyuki Oneda.

The company sold 1.3 million PS3s during the second quarter for a total of 5.6 million so far worldwide.

In contrast, Nintendo said Thursday that it has sold 13.2 million units worldwide of the Wii, which launched about the same time as the PS3.

Sony raised its forecast for the full fiscal year, which ends March 31, to $2.89 billion from the earlier projection of $2.81 billion.

Its computer chip business has seen healthy demand; the chips are used in personal computers, digital cameras and the PS3.

Sony has been banking on a resurgence in its TV business, where it fell behind rivals in flat-panel TVs. It now makes them jointly with Samsung Electronics Co. of South Korea. But it booked a slight loss from its liquid-crystal display venture with Samsung and acknowledged its TV operations were in the red for the fiscal first half.

The company recently showed a superthin TV — just 0.12 inches thick — whose display uses a different technology called organic light-emitting diode that President Ryoji Chubachi said symbolizes Sony's big comeback.

The $1,750 XEL-1, which has an 11-inch screen, goes on sale Dec. 1 in Japan. Plans for overseas sales are undecided. Production is set for 2,000 units a month.

Both profit and sales were down in Sony's financial unit, which includes an online bank and insurers. But profit from equity Sony holds in affiliates, including cell maker Sony Ericsson Mobile Communications AB, edged up slightly from a year ago, and losses declined at Sony BMG Music Entertainment, which Sony runs with Bertelsmann AG.

Best-selling albums during the quarter included Bruce Springsteen's "Magic" and Foo Fighters' "Echoes, Silence, Patience & Grace."

If you didn't notice, I posted in all three (MS, Sony and Ninny) these results. Just because you don't like the fact that Sony's losing money in their gaming division, it IS news. No one was complaining about the other financial results I posted - and no, they aren't doctored one bit. When will you admit the truth, son?

Please, go troll somewhere else.

Really what point do you have?? Sony is recovering look at sales, A great list of games is coming out exclusive soon. I mean just this week i have seen a massive increase in games. I dont see why you feel the need to post every single piece of bad news for sony. There is very little point as its pretty much only you who abuses sony anymore. Update 2.0 has been released and it really shows what the ps3 can d given the right apps. Remote start: You are able to controll your ps3 from the other side of the globe without leaving it turned on. So as i have done you can be at a freinds house and show them a music track/video/photo without having it with you. YOu can even play some games stored on your ps3. SO you could play lair on your psp from across the globe. Argue with that.

Fool. You can't play games streaming through your PS3 to the PSP. You can play videos and music though. And the remote turning on thing is a neat feature, but everyone was expecting other, more important updates. Such as being able to access the XMB without havin to quit your game.

You really think that there's enough power in the PSP to run PS3 games? That is an automatic fail, kid. Besides the fact that Lair uses Sixaxis motion sensing, and last time I checked, you couldn't do that on a PSP.

You should read stuff more carefully next time you spout your mouth, sonny.

While the Remote thing is cool, it's for a very limited % of gamers. How many people own a PS3 AND a PSP?

Actually you can. Certain PS network titles and the blue ray disk of lair. http://youtube.com/watch?v=mASdFCTNA7I

And there are lots of people who own both.

I personally do not think that was ever the intention to imply... Generally if the PS3 actually calculates the games actions like normal the only action the PSP actually has to do is recieve the rendered picture, which is rendered by the PS3 & instead of sent to the TV sent through a signal to the PSP, & vice versa, atleast that is what I would probably attempt to do if my goal was to do something similar, not use the PSP power as it's very obvious it doesn't have it, but having the PS3 do the normal stuff but send the final picture to a different screen sure, the fact it's a small screen will keep down the datarate a fair bit more than if it's a 1080p picture, all I'm saying is it's a viable option to extent, but I don't know the bandwidth limitations of neither the PS3 nor the PSP, it's just an example.

Last I remember I don't remember Sony recovering, The last I read was shortly after the 40GB PS3 was released, they said about how it rose numbers but they questioned if it would be sustained through & more importantly past the holidays especially with XBox 360 & Wii bringing out their own bundles & deals. I'd say I agree with them, With the games that are coming out, the most promising ones at the moment in my opinion are also coming out for Xbox 360 hence alot will go for the XBox 360 versions.

Now I like this, It doesn't mean much, it really doesn't but just 1 time out of all of them, Xbox 360 did outsell the PS3 in Japan: http://www.reghardware.co.uk/2007/11/12/xbox360_outsells_ps3_japan/

It's a small margin but I'm just saying that the exact same happened in some other places but it were the PS3 outselling for 1 or 2 weeks, & I just happen to remember the PS3 fans saying this & that... So I figured hey, get a little, give a little. Also Dougy, it's just news, sure it's little negative against Sony, You've had no problems sharing the negative news on the Xbox 360, so what is the problem?

Inu and the other sane folks - do what I do when dealing with the troll known as Dougy109 - ignore.

On topic, has anyone seen the overall worldwide numbers? The Wii has sold 282K this week - the 360 hit 203K and the PS3 hit 127K. Oh yeah ... the 40gb PS3 is selling - but definitely not as fast as Sony has been leading people to believe ...

Well, I can understand that it's selling, while it didn't seem like a good idea to me at first, with the bc dropped, but then I took a look, and realized that there aren't any games that I own that I would play over again besides 3=4 (out of 30-40+) and one of them I can live without playing. The other 2-3 would be a part of the GH series. And I know I'm definitely not alone in having no real need for BC....

@ Around the horn

I have like 55 PS2 games that I don't plan on getting rid of ... and for me to get a PS3, I'd need that. The only ones I want are the 60gb and 20gb. That's it. The rest don't have the features I want. I am not impressed with the games - not a fan of BR at the moment - and could care less about future titles. When they hit, then I'll give it a second thought.
