dubbed anime looses the anime feeling

did you ever notice when watching a dub it doesnt even feel like an anime?


there are exception..some shows still seem like anime after theyve been dubbed...tenjou tenge, elfen lied, inuyasha, full metal alchemist, naruto, yu yu hakusho, bleach death note etc


but a lot of them seem like they loose their anime way


when i watch japanese pokemon it actually feels like an anime. it reminds me of inuyasha sometimes for reasons i dont know. when it is dubbed it just doesnt feel like anime anymore

dragonballz reminds me of naruto when i watch the japanese, it has an anime feel to it. when i watch the funimation dub its like watching an animated version of a marvel comic like superman or something

one piece from 4kids was so horrible it was like watching a cheap anime parody from mad tv or something. the funimation dub actually has an anime touch to it

I agree that some of the older shows have rather bad dubs. However some of them have great dubs as well. Obviously not everyone likes to read while watching a movie/show (probably why Foreign Films that are subtitled don't do very well in a US theater). Once I have seen the show several times to understand what is going on, then I will check out the Japanese VAs. Some are loads better than the US ones, but others are really bad. Goku for example sounds like a girl half the time in the Japanese version. Although the Japanese intro to DBZ (Head Cha-La) is really cool...
Some shows US voices sound almost exactly the same (except the different language). For example IMO Johnny Yong Bosch does a good job of sounding like Masaya Onosaka in Trigun.

Dubs get a bad rep. Sure there are some dubs that really ill fit, but those cases I have seen were usually pretty bad shows to begin with. The English dub of certain shows has even managed to be superior to the Japanese dub, bringing more to the show. I know I may sound one track, but the 12 part Guyver OAV's English dub is far better than the Japanese.

BTW this sounds alot like the infamous Sub vs. Dub topics that get way out of hand on busier forums. They usually involve lots of flame wars, name calling, and loads of bans.

Just my opinion. There are a lot of places in the English where someone makes a shocked exhaultation, screams, calls a name, whatever, and the Japanese track doesn't have it.

For an example, Attack Of The Hyper-Zoanoid Team 5...

Sho, Tetsuro and Mizuki are on the roof when Team 5 attacks the school, Sho see's Elegen threatening some students but hesitates to help because it would mean exposing his secret to Mizuki. He looks at her with hesitation...

Sho tells Tetsuro to look after Mizuki, and she bewilderedly looks to Tetsuro as Sho scales the railings on the edge of the roof. Mizuki looks back and sees Sho preparing to jump off the roof, and runs toward him...

Sorry this was so long, but I thought it was a good example of the English dub actually bringing more to a show, and not always being a bad thing.

because it was a girl who voiced him -_-, when he was a kid the voice was good, a lot of cartoon or anime male kids are done by womens (bart simpson anyone?) but when he's an adult it just sucks
I got to say that in the portuguese version his voice is really good, better than the american in my opinion

on topic: sometimes it can change the way you look at the characters, in the portuguse version of shaman king, yoh and anna sound more grown up, instead of sounding 13 they sounded more like 14 or 15,altough it's one best dubs in portugal in my opinion

yeah but as an adult goku shouldnt sound like a girl. thats the one advantage i think dub DBZ has over the original version. they kinda got lazy and gave goku, goten, gohan, bardock, kid goku, goku jr, adult gohan, adult goten and GT goku the same voice. in the dub chris sabat did a good number of voices but most of them where not major characters, and he had a way of voicing them all differently.

really? because in america we got stuck with 4kids dubbing shaman king.(the same people who killed the pokemon series, yugioh series and first 100 episodes of one piece)
