My sympathies for him, Alzheimers is not a good disease at all :(

And for someone like him, to face losing your mind as you know it must be frightening. Not a good year for fantasy authors :(
Pratchett has Alzheimer's disease (http://%C2%A0%C2%A0%C2%A0%C2%A0%C2%A0%C2%A0%C2%A0%C2%A0%C2%A0%C2%A0%C2%A0%C2%A0%C2%A0%C2%A0%C2%A0%C2%A0http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/uk/7141458.stm)

Author Terry Pratchett is suffering from a rare form of early Alzheimer's disease, it has been revealed. He said in a statement that with forthcoming conventions and the need to inform his publishers it would have been "unfair to withhold the news".
Discworld author Pratchett has sold more than 55 million books worldwide.
The writer, 59, who gave the news on the website of Discworld artist Paul Kidby, said the condition was behind a "phantom stroke" earlier this year.
'Mild optimism'
He said: "I would have liked to keep this one quiet for a little while, but because of upcoming conventions and of course the need to keep my publishers informed, it seems to me unfair to withhold the news.
"I have been diagnosed with a very rare form of early onset Alzheimer's, which lay behind this year's 'phantom stroke'."
He added: "We are taking it fairly philosophically down here and possibly with a mild optimism.
The author said work was continuing on his latest book, Unseen Academicals.
'More books'
"All other things being equal, I expect to meet most current and, as far as possible, future commitments but will discuss things with the various organisers," he said.
"Frankly, I would prefer it if people kept things cheerful, because I think there's time for at least a few more books yet."
He told fans the statement should be interpreted as "I am not dead".
"I will, of course, be dead at some future point, as will everybody else," he said.
"For me, this may be further off than you think. It's too soon to tell.
"I know it's a very human thing to say 'is there anything I can do', but in this case I would only entertain offers from very high-end experts in brain chemistry."
Pratchett was made an OBE in 1998 for services to British literature.Cross-posting this in both here and the WoT forum.

Oh no :(

I'm not really into his stuff any more, but I can't tell you how many happy hours I got out of his work as a child.

Is some conspiracy taking out the fantasy writers?

:(

I haven't read his stuff lately, but did read his stuff when I was a teen...

bugger!

bugger!

Bugger indeed, generations and eras slowly draw to a close.

Ow...

Pratchett's probably my favorite author out there. Terrible, horrible news.

I think the muttering's right. This has got to be some kind of conspiracy.

Aye, but remember, He ain't dead yet.

Hmm from the top of my head that is David Gemmel and Robert Jordan that have died this year and Pratchett is now sick. Then you have David Eddings who almost destroyed his original manuscripts and himself.

Wow this is sad.

Not to make light of the fact but, it might be kind of interesting to see what sorts of ideas he comes up with once the disease becomes prevalent...

Still... My sympathy goes out to him.

What happened with Eddings?

On January 26th, 2007 it was reported that Eddings accidentally burned about a quarter of his office, next door to his house, along with his Excalibur sports car, and the original manuscripts for most of his novels. He was flushing the fuel tank of the car with water when he lit a piece of paper and threw into the puddle to test if it was still flammable.

Dumbass. :downcast:

Oh, man! Jordan is dead? That sucks!

And also I didn't know about Gemmell. That sucks, too.

Oh, and the Pratchett thing sucks!

Apart from me stating the obvious, they've provided some of the best fantasy reading I've experienced in my life. I'm gonna be watching Neil Gaiman now, lest he fall to this conspiracy.

I know my main man Decoy is watching Robin Hobb (although I think that's for other reasons).

A lot of bad news for great fiction this year and the list goes longer.

On a side note, I am curious as to how Brandon Sanderson is going to finish up WoT.

While I always hated the Wheel of Time as grossly over-inflated fiction, I must say it sucks for Jordan's readers to follow him for 11 massive tomes and 16 years only to stop one volume short of the finish. Ouch!

What bums me out is the glacial pace of George Martin's "Song of Fire and Ice" series. These are good books, but the wait for each volume is endless. 4 books in 9 years? A 5 year gap for the latest? Gah. :(
