If im not mistaken. If you throw it into the fire. your still bound to the notebook and will die shortly after. Seeing you get rid of it while its contracted to you still. it will also get rid of you.

There a few to many rules that make it so anything you do to get rid of the book fail. Unless you give up ownership and hand it directly back to the Shinigami itself. However the memories and such also from the time first laying hands on the book to relinquishing ownership. all go away. Until you lay hands again on it and do a death of the second owner. For a good reference the Yatsuba Line is a good example.
