Two 12-year-old sixth-grade boys were arrested in Gadsden, Alabama on Thursday for a notebook that allegedly listed their school staff and fellow students in a manner similar to the Death Note anime series. According to Etowah County Sheriff's Department Sgt. Lanny Handy, the supervisor for school resource officers, the lists were in a notebook that was discovered by school staffers on Wednesday afternoon. Handy said the students were inspired by the Death Note series on the Adult Swim network, but he also said there was no indication that the student were serious about planning an attack.
Etowah County Superintendent of Education Mike Bailey issued a news release that said that the students were suspended from the county's schools, pending a juvenile court hearing. The students, their parents, and school officials had met with Handy and a junior probation officer.
There were at least two previous incidents in the United States where school officials linked Death Note directly to students being disciplined. One high school senior in Richmond, Virginia was suspended in December over a list of his classmates' names that the school principal linked to Death Note. A middle school student in Hartsville, South Carolina was "removed" from school over a "Death Note" notebook in March. In neither case were there any arrests reported. In the fictional Death Note supernatural suspense story, a teenager finds a notebook with which he can put people to death by writing their names.

Your thoughts?
I think that people are obviously not teaching their kids what the difference between reality and fiction. Obviously the person had some sort of problem dealing with the teachers/staff at the school, which made them try to "kill" them using the "Death Note". Are kids that messed up these days? Back when I was in school, you never heard about any school shootings. Now a days there seems to be a steady increase in the violence at schools.

I personally find this **** ridiculous. Let people write names in their own notebooks, damnit!.

Ok, this show is on at like 1:30 in the morning. Who really stays up that late just to watch a show? And who lets their notebook get confiscated unless they wanted the attention? Idiots.
I hope those two dorks realize they've made it even easier for people to make fun of them, for emulating a TV show. Geez.

Who really stays up that late just to watch a show? You must be living in a secluded place, or simply behind the times if you think that the majority of people hit the bed at 9:00 because it's the right thing to do.

No, but if I'm up that late, I'm partying with friends! Though, I did see about 2 minutes of it when I got home Saturday night...at 4 am! :p

I never knew this could happen until I checked my list of names. Been writing them down since the sixties, and man a LOT of them have all died. Never should have written it.
ANyway, 1:30 a.m. IS too late for school kids to be up. Again, like always, the blame is the parents who are not paying attention to what their 30 hillbilly inbred kids are up to.

Oh man, Skipper, don't put my name on there! :bulb:
Ya, when I was a teen back in the '90s (like that was that long ago) I did get to stay up occasionally to watch SNL. I definitely didn't stay up to watch any show later than that; it was usually only because of a special event that I was up any later than 1AM.
But , I guess in times of TiVO and such, you don't necessarily have to stay up that late anymore...

I think kids should be allowed to stay up as late as they want. As long as they're in the house, they shouldn't have to be forced. When I was 8, I used to stay up all night, just because it was Monday.

Um, just to let you know. Most people could watch it the night before on Cartoon Network's website. Also some people do have Satelite dishes, so therefore it is on a little earlier (like 12 am) where I live. With the recent schedule change (Bleach is on at 11:30 now, followed by Death Note, and soon after that will be Code Geass.)
BTW I hope we don't hear some stupid person trying to make people do stuff by looking at them with their left eye (yeah I read an article about the show in Anime Insider).

Of course, there are simpler means, like recording it?

Hopefully nobody would need to get in contact with Pizzabutt to be able to even attempt that.

Nobody really wants to record things anymore. People nowadays would rather catch a rerun than go through the inconvenience of recording something.

I have an idea that its because they were six graders that the book was discovered. When I was in elementary school I had a compass to draw circles with. I had not even had a chance to use it yet for art. Thank god the teacher dident over-react and call down the thunder on me,like so may of the unfortunate ones to be ousted by Zero Tolerence. Turns out teachers look through students things when they aren't looking.
-Or it could be that they simply lack the I.Q. to be able to get away with such things. did you know that China had baned that Anime because they believe it promotes evil and bad hearts? (yea they are supersticious like that)

That's not how I interpreted it at all. To me, it sounds like some kids just made this for laughs and got in trouble because a few grown-ups made a big deal about it. I hate all those people who try to look for hidden meanings when there aren't any. Hell, if more of my friends knew about Death Note, I'd probably make one too just to get a laugh.

And yet again some stupid kids and the anime "Death Note"...
The Kopachuck Middle School in Gig Harbor, Washington expelled one student and disciplined three others on May 14 for writing 50 names in their own "Death Note" book. In the Death Note suspense manga, live-action films, and anime, a teenager finds a notebook with which he can put people to death by writing their names and the proscribed manners of death. Authorities said that the students' book included names of fellow students, a teacher, President George W. Bush, Paris Hilton, and other celebrities.
According to Pierce County Sheriff's Department spokesperson Ed Troyer, another student found the four disciplined students' book on the floor at the school and gave the book to a teacher. The teacher contacted the office of Principal Dave Colombini, who contacted the authorities. Colombini sent the following telephone message to the parents of his school's 620 students on May 15:
“Recently, an event at Kopachuck has raised safety awareness to an even higher level. A few students wrote some fear-provoking notes in a published book, and the matter has been thoroughly investigated. There is no credible threat to the school, students or staff.”
Troyer added, "This is typical Japanese horror movie stuff and is not a credible threat. We see how it could upset parents, but the appropriate actions have taken place, and there is no threat." The school's district superintendent, Terry Bouck, said that such a book is inappropriate for school, but declined to say that books like these will be banned. A father of one student who was suspended for three days said that the book was an outlet for frustration from about two years of bullying.
There were at least three previous incidents in the United States where school officials linked Death Note directly to students being disciplined. One high school senior in Richmond, Virginia was suspended in December over a list of his classmates' names that the school principal linked to Death Note. A middle school student in Hartsville, South Carolina was "removed" from school over a "Death Note" notebook in March. In Gadsden, Alabama, two sixth-grade students were arrested in April for a notebook that allegedly listed their school staff and fellow students in a manner similar to the Death Note anime series.

Here is a link about the "Naruto" related death, which also occured in the state of Washington...maybe all that rain does affect people's brain! Glad I moved away from there, before I went mental, or had a heart attack (I used to weigh about 205, now I weigh 170, cause I used to eat more junk, cause I was inside a lot more than I am now).
