View Full Version : If I knew you were coming, I'd have baked a cake!

Ok, here's my big ass cake adventure.
I have made kinda impressive cakes before, but this is the MacDaddy of them all. The base of the care measures 13"x20"". The base is 23"x32".
So far I have used about 12 pounds of flour, 3 dozen eggs, 6 pounds of butter, a bunch of sugar, have 15 pounds of icing ready, 2 pounds of rice krispy treats for the fenders, and the cake will be covered with fondant. I have baked (10) 9x13 cakes so far. I started this morning, at about 10am (EST).
This is the first time I did such a sculptural cake, and first time using fondant, which tastes nasty by the way. :noob: I am pretty nervous about this cake. It will also have to travel 65 miles to the party.
This cake is for my dad's 72 (or something) birthday, and is modeled after his first car.

Here it is so far. :|
blocking it out first, then carving it into shape.

I'll and progress pics, as it goes.

Good luck! Nice oldie car there! My dad has two old porsches, both from the 70's and one of 'em is the silver anniversary model. There is also a place down the street from my house where every Friday, tons of old American cars show up at a parking lot. Really cool

A car cake that reminds me of a Halloween episode of South Park. Satan's sweet sixteen-like party. Keep it up Bitter It looks great so far. :)

At first, I thought the red car in the first picture was a cake and I was like, thats ridiculous. But it looks awesome so far.

Grrrrrr...
http://img261.imageshack.us/img261/9927/cake7ye8.jpg
Well, the fondant tore because I had to roll it so thin to cover it completely.
I guess 5 pounds of fondant wasn't enough. *makes notes* Fondant is a ***** to work with, too.
So I tried to fix it with some "spackle", and I think after I put the front grill on, I will pipe some icing flames coming from the grill and fenders to hide the massive boo-boo. Well, I'll finish the wheels, and call it a night. :bored:

Dang, thats a sick cake right there. To bad it's going to be demolished when it comes to desert time.
Fondant? I thought it looked like a layer of Rice Krispie treats :noob:
Can't wait to see the tires (black licorice strings?) and rims
Your dad is a lucky man, to have his son make such a special cake!

The fenders are formed from rice krispy treats. (I think I said that somewhere ;))
The cake tastes great. It's made from scratch, better than box.
But even if the cake is dry and tasted awful, the best part will be presenting this to my dad, and seeing his reaction, and him knowing I love him enough to spend 12-15 hours on a cake for him  with my own hands.
And thanks. It's nice to show you folks where my talent lies. I envy all of you who are so articulate and debate so well. This is what I do well. Or at least mediocre for trying something new for the first time.

You have some really good talent to have made that. When I stopped by earlier, I was trying to imagine the cake looking like the car, but I just couldn't see it. Once you cut away the edges, it was then I realized that this cake will atcually turn out well.
It's good to see someone is putting their mind, and talent, to work. Now for the fun part, DRIVING.

I did video the process, and I plan on putting it on YouTube, eventually.
Ok, so here is the finished product.
The silver luster dust didn't go well at all, and kept beading up and dripping off the car. Grrrrrr! I was getting frustrated at the end and left off some details too. Oh well...next time I try something like this, I know more what to expect.

Wait, he bought the car you were making a cake of? How did he find it? Yeah! He has always wished he could have his first car again.:) As a side note, he used to race stock cars before I was born. Something about a crash, and having a kid (my older sister) made him decide to quit.
I dunno how he found it. He's been looking around apparently. He even drove to Indianna (from Cleveland, Ohio) to look at one, but wasn't as nice as the people made it out to be.
