Gee, you should have used a larger font size on the word "almost".
Just by reading one of the included doc files that came with the importer (one of the later versions) explains how to recolor textures. As a matter of fact, it's the updated method of recolorable textures which is by far better, courtesy of Belgabor.

Look here: http://www.vodhin.org/e107/e107_plugins/content/content.php?content.53 it might help... The tutorial covers both making colorable textures and transparent textures in one go...

yea thats how i learnt, it was awesome, you gota study any tutorial for a while though, it doesn't jump at you, i think i took 2 days (including regular breaks and going out) studying just that tutorial.... its easy when you know how, especially if you have previous experience with image editing, it made it so much easier when i found it the order of the recolours is RGB just like in image editing

so my textures need to PNG format?

PNG offers the easiest (in my opinion) way to make both Recolorable textures and Alpha textures. Other formats, like BitMap (BMP) also offer colorability, though the color assignments are controlled by the image's color pallette order (I'm not sure if that's changed with the newer versions of the importer, since PNGs were adopted, I went that route and never looked back ;) ).

Vodhin, I have to correct you there. It's not the format that makes the difference, but whether the image uses indexed colours or not. BMP also allows for unindexed images which should, for recolourability, work just like pngs.

Ah... Like I said, I changed to PNGs and never looked back. So BMPs can now use the same RGB set up as PNGs, right?

They always could =)
That is if they're not hit by the same bug of the image library pngs are.
