what is the difference between an alpha texture and a normal one

I pretty much don't know anything about CS, but I'll try and anwser:

Alpha texture is a texture in mid-air (like nothing around it, just an image floating)

a texture is basicaly an image(on an object or not) (alpha texture is a subgroup of textures)

That is my dumbed down description.
