View Full Version : Launch OR Lift? Take Your Pick...

This thread is not to flame Priemier Rides or B&M respectively, or discuss how awesome it would be if B&M built rocket coasters or Priemier built floorless coasters. It is just to see if launched or lifted coasters are more popular with our community of roller coaster lovers.
Please, vote in the poll first, then state your vote in your post, explain why you chose it, and then state your favorite coaster of that kind.
TAKE MY ENTRY, FOR AN EXAMPLE:
I preffer launch coasters because I don;t quite like the feeling of slowly climbing up lift hills, especially up those of older coasters, and I'd rather just take off, BANG, like that and head straight through the circuit. I can;t really say if I like Priemier or Intamin launchers better, I just like the feeling off launching (unless I bang my head against the headrest).
My fav launch coaster is California Screamin'.
YOUR TURN!

Im both. I really like coasters that launch but I also like going up a lift..... What does Maverick count as.... Its a lift but speeds up alittle going up...

P.S. Make a vote that is for both.

I also like both, so I can't pick just one.
The squished-in-the-seat feeling of a powerful launch is a lot of fun. However, I also like coasters that have a more traditional feel of being pulled to a starting point, then letting gravity take over from there. (It helps that I like heights, so I enjoy the opportunity to look around as the train goes up the lift.)
The one that I really dislike: lifts that slow down to a near stop when at the top of the lift. While I appreciate the view, I feel that it breaks the flow of the ride. It makes me feel like I need to get out and push in order to get the ride started!

I like them all.
Space Mountain Mission 2 has a launched lift, so, it's perfect :D

a launch is somthing that builds up anxiety for a few seconds...than froosh! incredible speed in seconds! its a feeling no matter how many times you do it....you still cant explain....
a lift hill is more anxiety building because of the time it takes to get to the top, every so often looking to your sides at the view thinking"were up there"
so....in summery.....launches are more fun.....but chainlifts are more scary(i would love to see a chainlift pass the 400 ft mark:))
so ya....i like 'em both

I like launched because when you see the lighs turn green you think, 'Oh ****. I am going to die!!!'
My favorite launch coaster is Stealth at Thorpe Park. The acceleration is crazy!!

Launches are cool, but I have to say lift. Slowly going up a lift hill really makes me anxious, which increases the thrill.

I've only been to one launched coaster (Space mountain (The old one)) and it was perfect! :D:D:D:up:
Although both are really good like the lift tells you when you are going to drop but also shows the height if people are scared of it. Im kind of going towards launches because you dont know when to expect it, the feeling of being so safe and pushed right into your seat gives an amazing feeling. Just bringing back a load of memories from Stealth.. :P Although, launchers do have the lack of time actually on the coaster.. Its just launch, up, down, end. Whereas the lift hilled coasters spend more time. I still think Launched.

I love the feeling of being squashed into the seat on a launch coaster.
But I also love the excitement of travelling up a lift hill! I had to choose lift hill, as I love the view you can sometimes get from the peak of a tall hill.

Oooh, that's a hard one. I'm not sure to be honest, I think a launch makes a nice start to a coaster though I really don't mind your normal hill. Erm..... I'll go with the launch.

I'm torn between the two.
The lift adds such anticipation as you clickity clack. You're like "alright, here we go" the whole way up. Oh,and Fahrenheit's lift pwns.
Launch, however is such an amazing rush.
Unfortunately, not every lift is vertical, so I go launch.

I can say that I like both. I really don't think that any coaster enthusiast could really choose, to be honest. For instance ,the launch on Stormrunner is really intense (I mean, 0 to 70 in around 2 seconds? You can't even get that on a car.) and it makes for quite the intense ride. But lifts just build up the tension that much more; since you're going up really slowly (or relatively, compared to a launch), you have to wait a long time for the ride to start. Its around 15 to 30 seconds for the lift compared to about 5 for the launch. Basically, I really can't choose. I like 'em both.

Launches great because you don't know when your going to go.
I'd say the best is the lift hill on the Incredible Hulk, starts off normal then launches.

I love launches because A. they are fast and cool and B. because lifts just freak me out too much.

Launches are a great adrenaline rush and traditional lift hills build up anticipation to the first drop.
Both can be great elements.

the whole point of a rollercoaster IS the adrenaline rush(the ability to make you scream, thats why they call them "scream machines"):haha:

Both.
Agreed.
I guess it depends on what coaster you are.
Lift is a classic element and also a very important one.
Launch is some what new, considering in the coaster history.
I find launches a lot of fun, but I really like both.

If you ride the Outer limits for the first time, the experiance is amazing. Kingda Ka is better with the Heads back, HOLD ON 3 2 1. then the is Superman Escape. You think you are going to launch when superman finishes speaking, instead he goes im going to get you out of here, fast .
Super (start launch) man Fast. But when launched coasters like Kingda Ka and Top Thrill go full circut... That is the point of no more lift hills

I like both. Lift hills are scarier imo though. Launches are more fun :)

Don't mind either. As they both got some sorta anticipation. Going up the lift hill gets me really hyped up. But on a launched coaster, the sound of Premier Rides LIMs is what i refer to as "the sound of anticipation".
Anticipation... I'm stuck to that word now...

^Premier LIM's are AWESOME. The scare factor I used to get on Speed: The Ride in Vegas was ultra magnified due to that sound. Well, that and the lack of any sort of any launch warning!

Any lift can't be scarier than the operator of the launched free fall at my local park! (Goes up, stops, up, stops, slightly more up, stops, stops, stops, up, stops, even MORE up, stops, more up followed directly by a fall!):up:

Yeah I love the LIM sound for that reason! The shear sound of anticipation!
Another reason I can't wait to travel to texas to ride Mr Freeze.

I like the sound of Intamin LIMs more, actually. Especially California Screamin's and any Impulse Coaster's. Oh, and don't forget Volcano!

They're both two different sensations, but I would probably say the launch wins by a 60-40 ratio in my opintion.
