View Full Version : DH:T - Good Game, BUT ...

Yesterday my DH:T arrived and i played it for several hours.
As far ias i can say now, the game is good and i really like to play it, but there are some points that disappoint me.
First of all i have to say, that the new graphics are awesome compared to DH2005 and get the hunting to a new level!
The "Downers" are the lack of detail.
You can no longer choose the attracting tools on your own, the horse ot only one skin and there aren't any sprays or stands at all!
The only stands you can use are pre-setup stands on the maps!
Next thing is, that a hunter profile is missing at all.
Ok, this might be good for tournaments, but i really loved it to "level up" my hunter in DH2005.
Some career mode or sth like that would have been great.
What i also noticed, is that you nolonger have a gps, where you can mark spots on.
Last but not least and for me one of the most disappointing facts, ist the trophy room.
You only see when, where and with what weapon you shot the game and the points you got for it.
No detailed chart like in Dh2005! Ni infos about the graphic settings that were used, no infos about the game, if its a world record or not ect.
You just have to "know" these things.
Also the small 3D Model of the game is not really ssatisfying, when you are used to the big DH2005 Trophies.
If i shot a world record, i want to see that in my trophyroom and not have to asume it by looking at the points and thinking "yeah, with that points it has to be world record".
All on all the game is really good, but the lack of details and options and the fact that you can feel, that it was originally coded for the xbox (the meus fell like a bad port with even all xbox buttons displayed right out of the box!) are some points that are keeping DH:T on the "good" level, where it could be "great" or "outstanding".
edit:
Ah, and it seems that you can't record movies anymore. :(
One thing more on the "made for xbox, ported to pc" list.

Ok, after some more hours of gaming i can narrow it down to several points that really need to be fixed / improved / added to get DH:T to the quality level of gaming and hunting which it aims to be at.
Don't forget, this list is my personal opinion after 12 hours of gaming, but all points are things that really need to be patched to improve DH:T imho.
I'm trying to keep this list up to date, so if any of you find out more things, just reply in this thread!
Red: Needs to be fixed!
Orange: Was changed by patch, but still needs improvements!
Green: Fixed by patch!
1: The whole engine and performance needs to be improved alot. The game feels laggy, even if i turn everything to low. And yes i have a computer, that could run it way better. ;)
When i move the mouse it takes a slight moment to do the movement ingame, which really turns down the game experience alot.
Don't get me wrong, i really love the new look, but right now it "doesn't feel right".
Patch 1: Some changes were made, performance improved, by turning the game overall graphics down.
Is that really a good solution?
Also you are still not able to play the game fluently on a machine with the specs on the box!
1.a: Also the AI is not that good as i expected, i haven't seen the animals interact with each other even once yet.
Ok, might be i haven't played enough yet, but in about 12 hours pure gametime there should have been some "animal interaction" somewhere.
The general behavior isn't that good either, in my opinion the animals in DH2005 acted way more natural.
In DH:T they often act stupid and run around you in circles or don't move at all, when you run towards them.
I also had a deers walking right through my stand!
Where is the "Advanced animal AI with true-to-life animal sight/hearing/smell, behavorial patterns and more"?
NEEDS TO BE FIXED!
2: The Trophyroom must be reworked completely! I really liked the detailed DH2005 charts and if i shot a Worldrecord, i want to see this in my trophy room! The details given in DH:T at the moment are just not enough. What about infos about the antlers, how many shots you needed or where you shot the animal, ect? Also the 3D models are quite small, you should be able to zoom in.
And what happened to the export trophy feature?
NEEDS TO BE FIXED!
3: Hunting Guess with in wildlife mode. Some infos about the shown animal would be great, to know what you hav to look for on your next hunt.
NEEDS TO BE FIXED!
3.a: Hunting Guess with Binoculars doesn't work sometimes. I had several cases were the hunting guess kicked in after i played some minutes, but once it was gone completly.
NEEDS TO BE FIXED!
4: The Shotplacment needs some serious improvements. Instantkill, because a goat gets shot in the lower leg with a bow? Hmm ... that does seem a bit strange to me.
NEEDS TO BE FIXED!
5: The sounds, especially the calling and animal sounds need to be reworked ... sorry to say that, but the deer calling sounds like someone is farting.
Patch 1: There seem to be some changes. But now i have quite loud steping sounds of animals over mid distances. Can't call that an improvement at all.
6: Portable stands are really missing! I like the "pre made" stands, but you should be able to set up your own stand where you want it to be. AAAND it was announced that portable stands would be in DH:T, which is simply not true so far!
NEEDS TO BE FIXED!
7: An option to mark spots on the map, like you could with the GPS in DH2005 would be great
NEEDS TO BE FIXED!
8: The Animaltracks are not quite accurate sometimes.
Often there are no tracks at all (also no blood after a clear hit.) or they disappear very quick.
Also there seem to be no marks on trees or on the ground like dung or scratches on the ground after the deer scraped.
NEEDS TO BE FIXED!
9: Once in a while wierd instantkill animations happen, especially with bighorn sheeps and mountain goats. (Spinning around.)
Also on some points the animations could be done better (running bears for example).
Also the deer seem to call without even an own animation for it ... they just walk, chew or do nothing, but you can hear them calling ... shouldn't there be an animation for it, as well as many other things like eating ect.?
Also i had another case of wierd kill ragdolls.
I shot a lion over 16 yards, the bulletcam kicked in and the cat flipped 3 or 4 times and flew over 40 (!) yards just to slide down the hill another 10! So i had to walk over 50 yards to get the cat, although i scored a 16 yard kill!
NEEDS TO BE FIXED!
10: You should be able to call and use the spotting scope while walking slowly, or crouching.
NEEDS TO BE FIXED!
11: There are no moose and goat / sheep calls.
NEEDS TO BE FIXED!
12: I noticed some minor graphical glitches, where you can look through the ground textures and see the skybox.
NEEDS TO BE FIXED!
13: Some skins for the weapons, the horse and the ATV would be great.
NEEDS TO BE FIXED!
14: The animals don't really eat the food you can put on the ground to attract them. At least its food, isn't it, so why don't they eat it? ;)
NEEDS TO BE FIXED!
15: Please bring back the "record movie" feature! I really loved to record Worldrecord shots.
NEEDS TO BE FIXED!
16: Hunters Sense, Stealth and Adrenaline Modes ... hmmm anyone forgot to build them in?
NEEDS TO BE FIXED!
17: Scouting Missions ... they were in DH2005, they were promised to be in DH:T, but you can't scout at all ... sad but true!
NEEDS TO BE FIXED!
18: "Hunters sense, adrenaline mode and stealth to sight in and shoot elk, moose, red stag, mule, deer, cape buffalo, caribou, cougar, wild boar, kudu and grizzly bear." ... hmm seems like there were some animals left out, or is it just me?
NEEDS TO BE FIXED!
19: An ingame chat options beside the global masterserver chat is missing! there is no ingame chance to communicate with someone in a LAN game or when you are not connected to the master server!
Patch 1: FIXED!
20: If you go into the chatlobbies by pressing F1, the ingame keys are still active! So when you try to select the Chatline, leave the clubhouse you are in, to switch to another one, or press a button, it might be that you accidently shoot ect.!
In general the chat is strange ... no timestamp an you even can't post a complete sentence, because its to long for one line!
NEEDS TO BE FIXED!
21: The Multiplayer has many many issues! Biggest one is that you an't connect to most of the MP Games. (yes UPnP works fine for me with other games.)
Patch 1: There are some improvents, but still there could be done alot more, to add stability to the MP.
It often is still feels laggy (no it was not ping lag) and i had 2 crashs too.
22: Muzzleloader prone bug! When you prone and shot with the muzzleloader and then hit the reload button, you won't be able to stand up again, neither be able to switch weapons!
Same happened to me with the crossbow ... i proned, switched over the crossbow to the antlers and ended up proneing with the antlers without being able to stand up or switch my gear!
NEEDS TO BE FIXED!
23: Trophys shot earlier then the patchdate are still "awaiting results"! That is really annoying and has to be fixed! Or aren't there any logs at all? If not, how did the people get their points and tourney wins? Sorrry to say that, but this is a really big let down and disappoints me big time!
Also alot of people seem not to get their points and results from tourney after the patchday! And if that wasn't bad enough, there are repots about the whole tourney system not working correctly! (Tourney results before end of tourney for example!)
NEEDS TO BE FIXED ASAP!!!
If these things would be fixed / improved / added, the game would really be outstanding.
Right at the moment it is a good game, but not the awesome game it could be.
I really hope the Southlogic and Atari are going to release a content patch quite soon, which deals with all these problems, because after that patch i really would recommend DH:T to every hunting fan or those who want to become such.
At the moment DH2005 might be the better choice for Newcomers and even for some more experinced hunting gamers.
dude Southlogic are making wedding dresses for there NEW game for the DS DHT IS all done...likely wont even be a patch!! they got there money and ran with it!!!
This should be in the new DHT section of the atari forums, you posted in dh05 thread.

I noticed i missed some very important things in my list!
Virtual hunters can now enter different modes, such as stealth or adrenaline, or employ an array of master hunting strategies, including building stands and blinds, to track and shoot their targets.
Deer Hunter Tournament provides numerous levels of gameplay, allowing hunters to embark on scouting missions designed to explore maps and equipment while studying animal habits.
Hmm ... I know that these are known points and one of the biggest things people complain about, so i think they fit in my list quite good.
16: Hunters Sense, Stealth and Adrenaline Modes ... hmmm anyone forgot to build them in?
17: Scouting Missions ... they were in DH2005, they were promised to be in DH:T, but you can't scout at all ... sad but true!
18: "Hunters sense, adrenaline mode and stealth to sight in and shoot elk, moose, red stag, mule, deer, cape buffalo, caribou, cougar, wild boar, kudu and grizzly bear." ... hmm seems like there were some animals left out, or is it just me?
I also edited these to the list in my first post.
The more and more i play and the more and more smaller and bigger bugs, missing features and other problems come up, there more and more i get really disappointed by DH:T ... :(
Southlogic and Atari really MUST fix many things!
An official statement would be great and is badly needed here, if Southlogic and Atari don't want to loose alot of customers.
there also lacking ingame chat, which is very helpfull to new comers of the game

oh, good point!
I used the masterservers chat so far, but for LAn games on bigger LANs, were the only you are plaing with is not sitting beside you, that really might be a problem.
Or if you just are not connected to the masterserver, that might really be a problem.
The list is getting bigger ... :(

I completely agree with the thread starter. Actually his list is much bigger than mine, but then again I played the game only for a few hours until now.
As already mentioned, very good graphics, much better than DH 2005, but this is where it all stops.
Sounds are funny (calling), lacking (gunshots), i do not even hear echoing after gunshot. My friend was shooting at animals and he was located 50m from my position and I COULD NOT EVEN HEAR HIM shoot! And this was with an excellent souncard, Asus Xonar D2.
Movie recording was one of the best features in DH2005 and now it is left out completely - this is a HUGE, HUGE flaw! This is a top priority to fix, IMO. It made me laugh 1000 times before at some of my moves over and over again, and now the fun is just being killed.
Network performance is terrible. If I host the game and my friend joins (we both have 2mbit down / 192kbps up ADSL) and we are both in the same town as well - the game sometimes interrupts connection, teamspeak is almost unusable (WTF, this is the first game I've experienced this) and this is more apparent on some maps than others. If I, as host, alt-tab to windows, game interrupts connection immediately (OMG), and it does so also if I open "game settings".
I used to kill a deer and start going for it lying down, but my friend still saw it standing and not moving - pretty lame bug.
And now for the "best" part. Graphics performance. Cmon people, I honestly don't see how anyone with "recommended" specs could EVER, EVER play this game with more than 15 fps. I have Intel Core 2 Duo E7200 OC'ed to 3.5 Ghz, NVidia 8800GTS 640MB, 4GB RAM. My friend has Athlon64 4400+, 4GB RAM, Radeon 3870. I get 40 FPS MAXIMUM, mostly it is between 25 and 35, even gets to 20 sometimes. He gets 20 fps all the time, (now hear this) REGARDLESS of game settings - changing from all low to all ultra does not affect performance at all, he gains 2 fps this way! Same happens to me. This game is really, really bugged in its graphics engine, definitely a "console conversion" issue. Both our computers can play virtually any today's game with high settings on 50+ fps except Crysis, but this game runs SLOWER than Crysis! How does that make you feel?
My suggestion is to get a patch to fix performance/network issues ASAP, fix the sounds and MOVIE recording ASAP. Those 4 things are really the top priority, and they ruin a game that was, and still is, supposed to be better than this.

Forgot to mention, our graphics cards are virtually the same regarding performance, the only reason I'm getting more FPS is because of faster CPU. Which is not even utilized in a good manner - I get two cores loaded 25% each, equalling to 50% CPU usage total, leaving 50% idle. Basically, I get single-core performance, but with load distributed to 2 cores. That is with game setting for multi-core usage switched to "ultra".
If the game is so much CPU bound regarding maximum FPS, why not utilize all the CPU time available? Although it seems much more to me that this is simply engine issue and there is no way to get better performance without a serious patch.

I agree with this post 100%. They really should fix this stuff. As of right now, the game is not only REALLY slow even on a modern beefy machine, but it's too consolized.
I also don't like the 3rd person view at all. This isn't Gears of War...

Is it just me or ... I shoot something at long range, it runs away - have to assume it is hit, somewhere, when you hit it at almost 400y and it takes off, you know you must have hit it or it wouldn't have moved (I missed completely once and it didn't even flinch), so, I hop on my horse, run to the spot where I hit it, nothing - no signs at all - no spoor, no hair, no blood, no tracks... I look around for 5 minutes in every direction, nothing...
The ONE time I DID find some tracks, about 100-150y away, I started following them, and ran into a bush and got stuck - couldn't back up, move sideways, etc - had to alt-f4..
Disappointment is beginning to grow exponentially here..
I spent 6 hours tonight taking my time, getting hits (I know I hit them because when I'd finally find them again, they had a bloody hole on the neck or torso) and never being able to track it after it runs.
I must be doing something wrong? Do the tracks not show up if you move towards the animal inside of the first 30 seconds after you hit it? Or are tracks random and you're lucky if you find anything at all?
When a deer gets shot in real life, there is no huge blood pool on the outside, on the hair, where the hole is, where the bullet went in.. Granted, they have to do something to show the animal has been hit, but how about something we could use to track the animal!?
I shot a mountain goat last night and watched it run - through my scope - don't remember if it was the spotting scope or the 3-9x, but when it was behind trees and I couldn't see the goat itself, I could still see the 'bloodstain' floating along with where the goat was running (so the trees are 'transparent' as is your character (I know because I set my video card to anti-alias transparent textures, and with that enabled, my own character is almost completely invisible! too bad the animals don't see him that way :)

10-24-2008, 06:44 AM
Yeah experienced that also ... missed only a bit, the deer stayed where it was without moving at all.
So i repositioned myself and shot again and then it ran off ... i went to the spot where it stood and no tracks, blood or anything at all although it was a clear hit, as i found out later ...
Also i found out a very annoying thing.
If you go into the chatlobbies by pressing F1, the ingame keys are still active! So when you try to select the Chatline, leave the clubhouse you are in, to switch to another one, or press a button, it might be that you accidently shoot ect.!
In general the chat is strange ... no timestamp an you even can't post a complete sentence, because its to long for one line!
Added it to my list.
Also updated the parts about the AI and the animations and tracks ... really sad, that all this was messed up in that way.

Yea.. Keys are still active while on server window, so you end up switching weapons, etc
The most annoying thing of all, other than not being able to find traces of anything after a shot, are the pop ups telling me to press the Interact button to get off the horse... Like I need to be reminded 5000 times? Not only does it take away from the immersion (the feel of being "in" the game) it blocks my view, and it is way more than redundant.
I have been playing video games for a long time - I know which key to press to get off and on the horse.. And.. I.. don't.. need.. to.. be.. reminded.. every.. time.. I.. take.. a.. step.. and.. stop.. and.. start.. and.. stop..
I KNOW which key to press - after 30 seconds of playing the game - especially since I choose the key myself by customizing my keys

10-24-2008, 10:28 AM
Oh yes, this thing with "horse popup" is really annoying.
Did anyone also notice that water surface is 100% still all the time? At ultra settings id actually does move, but sooooo slow, almost can pass unnoticed.
Sounds still suck. They suck more every day. Should try playing with onboard card to see if there is a difference between it and my expensive Asus Xonar D2. Currently Asus card plays all games magnificiently, but this game lacks any kind of sound effects, I can hear animals from 200 yards when they start running as "scratching" (sound is nowhere near running), my horse makes some stupid sounds when running (DH2005 was perfect regarding this), gunshots have terrible sounds and cannot be heard farther than 30m away...
Oh yes, forgot to mention. Animals in this game are stupid. Not just stupid, they act like imbeciles without any survival instinct. Yesterday there were at least 5 cases when bunch of animals were running around me (!!!) in circles!! I was shooting all the time and they kept running around, even ran through me a few times!! I almost fell of my chair when I saw a bear run trough me, then again in circles, and then the same happened with 2 deer. Is this some lame developer joke or what??!?
What about adding some AI? Isn't that what was supposed to be better in this game than DH2005 and was one of the major selling points?
Lets all face it (the gameplay tells us everything) - DH:T is not just a poor console conversion, it is rushed in distribution at least 1 year too early. It does not even look like a beta pre-release, it is more like alpha unstable.
This game needs not 1, not 2, but at least 5 major patches to get things right.
We all got ripped off, people. No wonder the demo was never released.
yes, the sound is really messed up,the animal is 200 yds away and still sounds like its in ur lap

I have a high end machine, water moves ok for me, but I have everything set to ultra. Though I am disappointed in the actual ground terrain, there is at least some grass, and enough trees to make it look realistic.
The sound, however, is another story. I have a Creative Labs Fatal1ty Xtreme Gamer card and 5.1 surround. The game is OpenAL, apparently, since there is a folder listed in the main directory, so that wouldn't have anything to do with Creative's previous issues with Vista.
The gunshots are terribly quiet, the wind and birds are louder than I'd expect - but I can't even hear my horse when running. I make way more noise crawling than my horse's hooves make when running (I can just barely hear the hooves when running). I do have my music volume turned all the way down but I doubt that's related - if it is, that's pretty sad.
A lot of fixes will be needed - for game performance (though, don't hate me because my computer runs it just fine - it had better with 2 4870x2's in Crossfire!) and for AI, even aiming points (when the leg is the kill zone, but a shot to the top of the shoulder doesn't knock them down, we have a problem!)
Shoot an animal in the shoulder in real life, it's going to drop to the ground- though it may try pushing along with its back legs.
I found one of my deer with a bullet hole in the side of the chest - and it survived that one - had to spend an hour trying to find it on the map again - and the kill shot that took it down (and from which it dropped about 40y after being hit) was the leg shot..
The game could be so much more..
Like being able to select bullet size (when I choose the .270, I should at least know if it's using a .130g vs a .150, even if I am not given the choice!) because a .270 is sufficient to take down any animal, with the right bullet - lets not start the debate here - yes, if you look at the XP3 130g .270WSM from Winchester for small game like deer, up to the 150g XP3, which will drop any North American land animal and most African, I would love to have the choice. Since I don't, I have to choose a different calibre and assume that the .270 is a deer gun (130g only) because I can't even drop a deer with it..
Guess I need to start carrying that .375 around and see if my shots knock them over like they should!

When you prone and shot with the muzzleloader, you won't be able to stand up again, neither be able to switch weapons!
Same happened to me with the crossbow ... i proned, switched over the crossbow to the antlers and ended up proneing with the antlers without being able to stand up or switch my gear!
Also (again) I shot a Moose into the chest right behind his leg.
Perfect lungshot you could think, but nope, it ran off ... i found it 10 minutes later accidently, because all tracks were gone the time i got to the place i hit him, and finished him off with a bow shot into hthe lower leg ...
There also seem to be problems with the tournament servers.
I got my points from yesterdays tournaments, but my 2 trophys still display "awaiting results".
Altough i had the popup, that asked me, if i want to view the results of the tournaments, nothing happend as i clicked yes.

:(Disappointed on soo many levels...:( I'm not sure if the game is fixable or not... I was sooo looking forward to a beefed up DH2005 in DHT... Better graphics, animal AI, weapons, locations, etc. and to my dismay... all the great features from DH2005 were left out ????!!!!???? No hunter guess!!! no hunter rating, no customizable weapons!!! CMON GUYS!!! Not to mention you need a SUPER computer to run the game!!! stopped playing cuz it was soooo laggy and choppy... :pout:
I might come back to it if they come out with a massive patch... but til then back to DH2005 or wait for "The Hunter" game for PC to come out...
And I was gunna buy Atari stock.... GRRRRRR

Yea, I still have awaiting results for all of my tournaments - maybe it just takes a couple of days even if you got the score - or maybe they forgot to have that message update. Probably an easy fix in a patch.
I had the same problem with not being able to stand up - started a tournament, spotted a decent buck early on (started at Dawn) but was using only bows, no attractants, and a spotting scope - spent about an hour and a half working to get in front of him, away from the wind, 1/4 of the time on my belly, and suddenly, with the spotting scope in my hand, couldn't stand up, couldn't change weapons... Ended up doing alt-f4 :(
Bad enough if you can't track the target but spending that much time in the game with nothing to show for it because of a bug is more than frustrating..
Maybe we'll see a patch in the next couple of weeks.
But then, Atari pushes to get games out early - it's their MO.

No hunter guess!!!
Use the binoculars. ;)
But i had some cases, were the guess didn't work (nothing showed) for the first minutes of the hunt and once it was gone completly.

I'll end up buying this game eventually, too busy bow hunting in the real world right now however my buddies and i play dh2005 on my laptop before shuteye. One thing i have always liked about deerhunter games is the attention to details, sounds to me like this game was kinda thrown together....oh well

Thanks WargOd... I found that out the hard way!!! But if you carry binoculars, you cannot carry a spotting scope!!! GRRRRR.... so then I have to carry two diff. guns with diff. ranges.... and guess how far I'm shooting... ?!?!?! Sooo much GUESSING... I GUESS I'm going back to DH2005 :((

There is so much wrong with this game that it would take an expansion pack to fix every problem and add the missing content they had promised us would be there in the first place.
I seriously doubt that there will be a major update to DHT, well I guess Atari will lose its customers for this genre, but we can all look foreward to "The Hunter", beta testing on that game is right around the corner.

There are a few things that are very cool... I like the new hunter profiles...:) (characters) and how they are customizable (hats, glasses, etc.) and the terrains are very expansive and detailed... Shame I have to use low settings :( to avoid the screen lag...
Are we ever going to here from Atari on our concerns?? or what the next step is for this game?? Just curious:confused:

This game was not what I had expected it to be. I have a friend who is extremely naive and says I don't know what I am talking about at all. He purchased the game 3-4 times because he did the digital download and was obsessed with it, what a moron. This was a horrid obvious Xbox 360 port (hence identical controller buttons and button colors). I have a decent computer and I can play much better looking games at constant acceptable frame rates than this game can. The recommended system specs are extremely underrated. High or low graphics settings it's still slow. I get every single flaw that was mentioned by others about this game. There is no point on even buying it, seriously, unless it is completely overhauled with a patch. I thought there would be more to do with your hunter then just a few measly hats, facial hair, and sexes. I'd rather pull out DH2005 again and play that. I'm extremely ashamed Atari and South Logic for even thinking this was going to be good! How could you let us down?! :(

ok, just for the protocol, i post this here also:
I wasn't able to play for a bunch of days, and tadaaaa a patch was released.
Good news so far, BUT ... and here's the "but" again ...
why are the old trophys still "awaiting results"?
There have to be some logs on the master server, else we wouldn't have got points and Tourney wins for them, but it wasn't possible to actually fix the results, now the tourneys are working correctly?
You must be kidding me ...
Improved performance, and the Multiplayer fixes are good, but i can't understand that this issue wasn't fixed!
Sorry Atari and SLS, but the fix is noting more then a hotfix and even a small one, that doesn't adress many many important issues.
I also updated the list acording to the Patch.
not really much that has been done ...
