View Full Version : The Enhanced Edition Upgrade Fails (As in, Its not installing)

After weeks of not being able to get the Original to install - the Enhanced Edition throws another curve at my game and my at my patience to get it working.
It took lots of messing around but I am finally able to get The Witcher to run properly
Heres as much info as anyone could ever want in helping me solve this problem:

Ive got all the upgrade files in this directory:
C:\Users\Chris\Desktop\Witcher Upgrades [[IOW, sitting in a folder on my desktop]]

The game is installed in this directory:
J:\Program Files\UserInstalledApplications\Games\The Witcher [[IOW, on my external hard drive]]
--------
Im trying to install these upgrades:
TWEE_Upgrade
TWEE_Italian Language Pack
TWEE_English Language Pack
TWEE_Adventure_Side_Effects
TWEE_Adventure_The_Price_Of_Neutrality
---------

I simply clicked TWEE_Upgrade and let it fly with these options selected:
EN and ITL voiceovers
Subtitles in all availible languages
Price and Side Effect Additional Adventures

Total Space: 2.94 Needed out of 580.32 free
---------

I have checksum'd all the files and they seem to be fine. TWEE - Actualization Pack runs through its motions and then after all this time im slapped with this error message:
Im on the "Modifying Game Files: Process may take two hours blah blah blah" thing and and then...BAM.

"Failed to Extract File From Archive:
Diff_000013.dif" clicking Okay (No. Its not okay!) closes the error and gives me:

The Witcher is not installed properly.
Cannot be patched.

Closing out of that says that game files were not modified (who knew! waited twenty minutes for that!)
and interestingly, it then stops responding if i hit "Finish" to close the installer.

The game then refuses to open again from the CD (there is no shortcut on my desktop for some reason and never has been. -cry-)
So i assume its broken now. I can remedy THAT by simply deleting The Witcher folder (the one on my ext-HD) and reinstalling the entire
thing over again. (something like an hour to do. NOT FUNNY.)

Ohh gurus of The Witcher Boards...I ask of thee to help answer my question when Atari is useless to all who appeal for their help.

---------
In addition to this problem, when playing the game, if i let the intro movie play, the one with that badass scene of Geralt beatin the hell out of some demon thing and the narrarator is goin on about a monarchs daughter being a monster or whatever - If i let that play out, the game crashes.
Hitting escape lets me avoid the crash and move on to the games main menu.
Its not that important but it bothers me a bit because I have a tendancy to just click on a games launcher and go do something while it all loads.

Any quick fix for that?

Hmm, maybe something isn't quite right with your permissions.

I would try not to use the external hard drive for now, as that might add another layer of complexity to things. Certainly the problems could be related to your difficulty in installing the game in the first place - maybe try running through all the usual disk cleanup, scandisk, remove anti-virus etc. things.

I don't think it's possible to install multiple language packs to a game that is, for instance, in English.

Make sure that you download and install the upgrades and patches in the language of the product. Also, the coding for a game in English will not be the same for a game that's marketed in, say, Italy or Germany.

But I deeply sympathize with your frustrations here. When I had attempted to upgrade to the Enhanced Edition, I ran into several complicating situations. For one, the launcher would send me to a European website that I couldn't understand because I don't speak the language. I presume it was a Polish website. And when I finally found the website that I could read (i.e. English), I had to jump through hoops to download (i.e. product registration requirements).

In the final analysis, I'm satisfied with the upgrade (i.e. it hasn't been "buggy"). The game does seem to run a little smoother now....although that might have to do with my recent driver updates with my graphics card, BIOS and OS.

But I wouldn't say that I would spend much time getting worked up over the upgrade. The game was still cool before the Enhanced Edition.

I think your right.
I was able to finally install the Enhanced Edition - but it worked when i installed just the patch and the english language pack. No side quests either, but i figure - i should probably BEAT the game first before going back for those.

That's good news!!

A little patience, in the end, does payoff. All game developers want their games to work for everybody because:

1) That's why they made it to begin with.

2) It's good "marketing" when you don't have consumer complaints.

3) It increases the chances that consumers will still buy their products in the future....which means they will earn greater profits.

It would be nice if, in the case of certain zealous gamers, that they refrain from insulting or antagonizing the developers of "buggy" games and learn to be patient when waiting for the inevitable patch. There are so many systems and system configurations to contend with that, sometimes, a patch may take a while to be released. It's not because the developers are "slacking off"; it's just that they want to make sure that a patch/upgrade works with all, or mostly all, of the system configurations that have been the source of the problems.

One of the big advantages of the free market is that there is a great variety of PC's and PC products to pick and choose from; and usually, at a good price. But the unfortunate consequence of this is that the game developers are only developing the game to work on the particular systems that they, themselves, have....which means that there's always going to be compatibility issues on systems that they weren't working with.

dvineinfekt,

How did you get the Enhanced Edition to install? I have been going through the install and about the time it looks like it is finishing I get the blue screen of death. I've tried a few things and got the game to start but there is no text appearing where there should be some. When I try to install the patch it says that my installation is not complete and then aborts out.

Quintera;

Do not attempt to update using the Witcher's launch menu. If I remember aright, I had problems upgrading to the Enhanced Edition that way; for instance, I think I had been directed to the Polish webpage....which was worthless to me, since I don't read or understand Polish.

Instead, I manually installed the update from the developer's English webpage. You will need to register your product and be logged-in at their website, in order to receive the patch. You will also need to input your product key before you can begin the install.

If you bought your game in England or Europe, you probably did not receive any manual...hence, no product key. If that is the case, you need to contact CDProjekt, or www.thewitcher.com (http://www.thewitcher.com), and have them issue you a product key for your copy of the game. If you don't have the receipt, then a copy of the ISBN code---found on the packaging---should suffice as "proof of purchase". Then you should have no problems updating to the Enhanced version.

What method did you use to install (i.e. manual install from website or using the "update" feature in the launch menu)? Did you get the update from www.thewitcher.com (http://www.thewitcher.com), or some fileshare site like gamespot, fileplanet or gamershell?

Also, there may be some conflict with your PC's security software, which is causing an interference with the "update" process.

There might also be some problem with your system hardware, not necessarily related to the update at all; which happened to accidentally coincide with the updating procedure. If you run chkdsk and/or other PC tool software, it might spot the issue for you....if indeed that is what is at issue. For instance, your power supply may need to be replaced....frequent system crashes can, more often than not, be attributed to a faulty/failing power supply unit.

Incidentally, in-game slowdowns/choppy frame rates/freezes are often due to the lack of sufficient power flow to your graphics card...not necessarily a faulty power supply or defunct graphics card. Nevertheless, you will still need to buy a power supply; one that can handle the power usage of all your PC devices.

Finally, make sure that your graphics card chipset is compatible with the game you are playing. If it isn't, then that may also explain why you can't get a game to run, or run properly.

That isn't the case at all - we all got manuals and CD keys here. I bought 4 copies of the game from different sources and they were all fine.

I purchased the DVD from a store in the USA.

My problem is with the initial installation. I run the setup.exe files from disk #1, do a custom install deselecting all non-english languages. The install appears to go fine and eventually it asks to insert disk #2. I insert disk #2 and the install continues. About 1 minute into this I get a blue screen and have to shutdown.

When the machine comes back up the game will not run because it is missing a directx file. Disk #2 has the directx install on it so I run it. The game starts up and plays the intro movie (nice graphics!!). As it's playing the word "empty" occasionally appears that the bottom of the screen. Eventually I get to the control window but there is no text, everything else appears fine though.

When I try to install the 1.4 patch the it tells me that I have not completed the installation and it aborts out. No where during this process did it ever ask for my key (which I have in the manual)

I have been through this process 3 or 4 times and it all happens the same way every time. I haven't tried the standard installation because my hard drive is getting a little low on space.

Any suggestions would be great.

Lousy virus protection software. I turned it off and everything installed fine. Thanks for the comments.

I apologize for the misrepresentation. I had read a blogsite that had suggested that this was the case. Thankfully, it is not!!

About the game not loading:

Try "run as administrator" option that you can access by right clicking the mouse on the game icon and see if that does anything.

If not then skip loading the game from the short-cut icon and, instead, locate the "witcher.exe" file in the appropriate sub folder and double click to launch. If that doesn't work, then try the same thing with the "launcher.exe" file and see what happens.

There might be a system/driver configuration conflict that you might need to get resolved before the game will work. I recommend contacting the customer support service to get this part worked out. You will need to give them your system information, in order to help.

To make a file that contains your system specs, type "dxdiag.exe" (Direct X Diagnosis) from the DOS command prompt that is found in Vista's "Accessories" folder, named "Command Prompt". It will create and save the file as "dxdiag.txt" on your desktop. Include it as an attachment with your service ticket.

If all else fails (i.e. the game won't work, period), contact Atari/CDProjekt and request they send you an unopened copy of the game so you can get a refund at the store. Just be sure that you still have your original receipt. If you do not have the receipt, then the retailer will probably issue a store credit.

i've got the enhanced version, but it wont install, the first time i just clicked easy install, it got about halfway through, then an error meassage came up titled 'Feature Transfer error.
and the content was-
----------------------------------------------------
Feature: Data
Component: Data
File: D:\data3.cab
Error: Data error (cyclic redundancy check)
----------------------------------------------------

anyone know wat the hell thats about. i tried again, but this time choosing the custom install, i turned off all non english subtitles and voice overs, but leaving on the extra quests. This time the install got to around 80% then the same error message showed. i was not asked to change disk at all either, was i supposed to?

That means your drive cannot read the CD. See if the CD is either scratched or dirty. If not, then it may be a problem with your drive.
