Hi..

Two questions really :

1: I know textures have to be the power of 2 but do they have to be square. Can I have one thats 16x256 for instance.

2: Is there anyway to UV map in Sketchup. If not does it matter how many groups I have with different textures.

Thank you for any help.

1:The texture HAS to be square.

2:you can't UV map in sketchup but you can just apply the textures to each face and still work with rct3

... but you can just apply the textures to each face and still work with rct3

Which is the definition of UV-mapping, so you can UV-map in SU :)

UV Mapping...

Unwrap the objects faces and create a "flat" template, texture this template and then apply to all faces so that the image maps onto the faces correctly.

Basically I have an area about 4m x0.2m (sketchup metric units) which sticks uot from the main object face which I need to texture. It seems a waste to create a texture 256x256 just to do this when 256x32 would do. I am also worried about the file size if I have to use square textures as I have a few of these.

So what is the solution ?

Thanks

Slippery.

Make a 32 X 32 texture and have it tile. And try to use a texture containing both of the parts.

Thanks..

Unfotunately tiling is not really an option.

Just one more thing... Is there a way to position textures on groups in SketchUp. I know it's possible on faces but I'm importing dxf models (they are all 3 sided polys) so the only way I've found to add a texture is to group the faces I want and add the texture and scale it to fit but is there a way to change the start position of and rotate the texture ?

Then I could have all my textures on one image and move, scale and rotate so that different parts of the texture are used on different groups.

Sorry for all the texture questions but this is the last hurdle for me.

Thanks

Yes, you can. Right click a face and choose Texture> Position. There are pins that are at the four corners, different pins move and rotate the texture in different ways.

Sandwiches..

This works for faces but not for groups (ie. on a load of faces that are grouped).

How do I do this for a group (or am I just being stupid).

You can explode your group(Right click group and choose "Explode"). Map the textures, and then re-group the different textures after your done moving them around.
If you really want to keep everything grouped, right click the group and choose "Edit group." This should allow you to choose each face individually.

Thanks..

I did try this but was unhappy with the results.. but I'll give it another go.. maybe I can get it sorted this time.

Thanks again

There is some modifier (Alt, Ctrl or Shift, I don't remember) to the paint bucket tool that allows you to sample the Texture form a face and then transfer (probably with a different modifier) that to adjacent faces so it flows correctly. Refer to the SU docs, it should be explained somewhere in there.

^Paint sampler tool. There is a button within the paint bucket menu, it looks like an eyedropper.
