View Full Version : [HLP] Question about Reorganizing and Renaming Custom Scenery

Hi Everyone!

I was just wondering if there was some way to reorganize and rename custom scenery sets that you did not make. There are many sets out there, that for whatever reason, were released without icons, for example, or with the most cryptic names ever. I realize some creators release the sets without ever officially finishing them, which I definitely understand. I am just wondering if there is a way for a non-creator (a.k.a., Me) to rename these objects/folders and their respective icons to make navigating through scenery in-game as easy as possible? I'm assuming it would involve the Importer somehow. I have tried looking through the tutorials, but they do not mention anything about renaming or adding icons after the set has been created.

I'd appreciate any and all help! Thanks =)

There's not. If you wanted to change the names, you'd have to have the original model files, make new .ovls and so on. So no, there's no easy way around names. Sorry .. :)

Well, If I was you I would extract the files from the folder and open them on the RCT3 importer and make new text strings and icons and simply rebuild the set but as said above there is no easy way.

Thanks for the suggestions! I don't really expect any easy way; I;m willing to put in the work. I was just wondering if there was even a way at all without having any of the original textures, models, etc.

Wait a minute!

That's all fine and dandy if YOU and ONLY YOU is going to use that set.

That means you can't release any park or any ride that might have used it. You can't share the set with anyone else either. It can only be on your computer for your own personal use.

Otherwise we'll end up with upteen versions of the exact same sets and it's also clearly against the original designer's rights. I'm sorry, but I can't handle duplicate copies, nor do I want to deal with the mess having to have certain duplicate sets in order to open a park either if these get distributed to others, and I'd make a guess that others would fell the same way.

This happened in rct2, and people ended up a dozen copies of one SINGLE object. It was (and still IS) a complete mess.

Please consider very carefully before you do this. Perhaps Belgabor knows of a way.

Thanks.

Chances are this would be for personal use only. Its sort of a hard situation, though. On one hand, navigating through scenery would be 1 million times easier and more efficient. And frankly, we could all use some efficiency, especially when lag is totally ruining our existence.

On the other hand, I couldn't release any park I made because of what you mention. I could provide images and videos, though?

Not sure - I'll wait and see if there is a way to reconcile the two situations.

There is unfortunately no clean solution. Parks access scenery through the location of the Style ovl, so if you rename anything with a new Style ovl, you'll have to provide it. On the other hand, as long as you do not include the scenery ovls and make your Style ovl work with the original items in their original positions (file-system wise), I do not see a real copyright issue as long as you clearly state what you did (pretty similar to DasMatze's wood set). RCT3 doesn't mind at all where a Style ovl pair sits (well, as long as it is somwhere in the Style folder), only the location and names of the scenery files matter.

But, as I said, that still leaves the problem of distributing your parks. What may work is if you do an in-place substitution of the Style ovls, ie if you don't mind the location on disc and put the theme including your style ovl in the same (disc) place as the original, there theoretically shouldn't be a problem. So if that works (in theory it should), you can then have the sets appear as you want on your pc and have it work for others with the original set. I would recommend to test that with a small set though before you put major work in it and later find out it doesn't work after all.

So how exactly do I go about renaming the objects while keeping the Style ovl referencing the original objects (file-systems wise)?

Actually you (in theory ;)) can't do much wrong. Just act as if it was your own theme you want to create, but enter the original theme name and prefix (split it as you like, for this it doesn't matter). Then add the scenery ovls as you would do with your own (of course also all the other stuff like icons and strings, but those you can do as you want). You just have to take care that the "Location within the theme" setting matches the original (it is the sub-folder the scenery ovl is in within the original theme).

Thanks for being understanding CoasterCowboy, I agree with you that it's hard to keep everything organized. My main concern was just that we don't have a repeat of what happened in rct2. Glad that Belgabor had some advice, if you try a small set I'd love to see how it turns out.

Thanks for the help guys! If I get it to work with a small set, I'll let you guys know if it works. It might even be useful to make a dummy park that uses that set so that we can test Belgabor's theory of just replacing the Style ovl.

We'll see. Thanks again =)
