No Air was a good one.. Alton came up with brilliant names like Nemesis, Oblivion. Then all of a sudden, Rita.

I don't see how you don't like those. Tatsu is an excellent name, Behemoth is good too, and I don't mind Sasquatch. However, I suppose you're entiteled to your opinion.

Rita is pretty bad. I also can't stand any variation of rollercoaster, like Rollo Coaster or Rollies Coaster. It just sounds stupid. Any coaster built less than 50 years ago named rollercoaster or coaster is annoying, especially if it's a steel coaster. I also hate when parks use the name Kiddie Coaster for, well, a kiddie coaster.

^ Agreed. I totally disagree that Tatsu is a bad name choice, as well as Behemoth.

Agreed with Rita as well.

The ride names I dislike are:
Disaster Transport
Son of Beast
Terminator Salvation: The Ride (Even just Terminator Salvation would be better...)
Pony Express

^Oh, right, I forgot about Son of Beast and Terminator. First of all, Son of Beast sounds like whoever came up with it was drunk, "Hey, we need a name for our crappy coaster, let's not come up with a cool name and instead name it after a good coaster! Maybe that will make people think it's actually a good ride." It also makes me lol everytime I see it's abbreviation, SOB. It makes me think that whoever named the ride knew it was terrible and decided to make the name a total joke.

As for Terminator, I agree, just Terminator Salvation would sound okay. Even just Terminator the Ride is fine. But putting them together doesn't sound good. It really just sounds like it should end at Salvation.

Actually, I don't really mind stuff like "Diving Machine G5" and "Halfpipe Coaster" because some people just trasnlate from their native languages. What I don't think is excusable is Cedar Fair just plopping a ride down and giving it a crappy name like "Twister" or something like that. That's just sad, because a name is very important to a ride/coaster/park because it gives the person an impression about it.

Does anyone remember what movie Hurler was supposed to be tied to? I was thinking Bill and Ted's Excellent Adventure, but, now that I think about it, I'm not so sure that's right. I used to know, but I just don't recall.

At the time, great idea. Now, nobody knows what the hell it is. It wasn't timeless enough to theme a ride to it.

Texas Giant
Scream
Millenium Force (I'm sorry but it's stupid)

And then anything with a number on the end. Magnum XL 200, Steel Dragon 2000, etc.

But those numbers actually have some significance, they not just randomly thought up and tacked on the end.

For Magnum its showing its the first coaster above 200ft and henceforth the first hyper. And for Steel Dragon 2000, it was built in 2000 and 2000 was the year of the dragon.

Hmm, I don't really agree with most of your choices. However, The Big One is stupid, I agree with that one. I've also never really got the "XL" part on Magnum. If it's saying the ride is "extra large", that's kind of repetitive, since the number "200" is also talking about height :/

Harpo
12-16-2008, 11:57 AM
At the time, Cedar Point was playing up Magnum's long length in addition to its height. The impression I got from talking to management was that the XL was for Extra Long, and the 200 was for the height. I worked at the park for the '88 and '90 seasons, so the ride was a common topic! I know a couple of managers who were very displeased with the name. One of them said that it fit the park's pattern. He felt that the park's best rides all had hideous names, and the worst rides all had great names. They just never seemed to be able to tie a great name to a great ride! :D

I like the name Mean Streak but the coaster well.... It was good untill the trims were added because of the roughness. If they retracked it and reprofiled it (removing the trims as well) it could live up to it's name.
