I have had Silverfall for some time now and back when I got it, my computer was so clogged with viruses and met a little under the recommended requirements, so I could not play it. Well, I have a new computer now that easily surpasses all of the recommended requirements, and it still lags just as bad as it did before. My new computer is running Windows Vista Home Premium so I'm curious if this is the problem. My reason behind thinking this is that my older brother also has Silverfall and his computer is slightly slower than my new computer but his runs perfectly on XP. If Vista is the reason for my problems, are there any patches or anything else I can download to fix it?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hi!

Silverfall does not have problems with FIESTA per se (afaik, I'm running XP), but it is recommended to play in admin-mode and also to use the latest servicepack. Install patch 1.17 for the retail version of Silverfall if you haven't already done that. If you would tell us your computer specs we could try to find out why the game plays choppy on your rig ...

It also helps to lower the graphics quality settings on the game (just because a new PC meets a game's specs doesn't mean you can run everything on high settings). ;)

I have tried lowering the graphics but that did nothing.

As for my specs it is...
Intel Pentium 4 2.50 GHz Dual Core Processor
4 GB of RAM
500 GB Hard drive
Nvidia GeForce 7100 (I don't know how to find the amount of RAM on it with Vista)

And what's this Admin mode, the game told me to play with administravtive properties but my account is the Admin on the computer, am I missing something?

Here are 2 easy-to-use tools for a quick tech-overview:

CPU --> cpu-z (http://www.cpuid.com/cpuz.php)
Graphic card --> gpu-z (http://www.techpowerup.com/downloads/1281/TechPowerUp_GPU-Z_v0.3.0.html)

that's what I meant ... :)

Did you install the latest servicepack for Vista?

well, im now running silverfall EA and it works fine on my vista im using one of the latest ATI raiden graphics cards and i have 3 gig of ram ( due to research, a system only uses 3 gig of ram, so 4 gig is kinda useless....) im on home premium SP2, i have no problems what so ever, so i think you need to check out your latest system up dates (and serch Nvidia for your latest graphics card updates, helps alot :noob:

but no reason why it shouldnt work there man, unless, youve done somthing to the game, or, not install AGEIA latest download!!!!!

hope this helps you :)

I think I have the lastest service pack installed. First day I had my computer it went through fifteen updates. So I just assumed that it was up to date.

What is the latest AGEIA download, how do I check if I have it, and where can I download it from?

clisk start, all programs, then under the monte cristo, or whatever you named it you should see a AIEGA show tool bar kinda option, click it, then open it up, under there should be an option to search for updates,

do tell if it helps you run the game or not =]

Okay, I did everything and still nothing, when I searched for updates it brings me to a site that says... "Sorry, 'drivers.ageia.com' does not exist or is not available." When I check the info about my AGEIA processor, it says "No AGEIA Physx Processor installed" and underneath of that it says I have installed AGEIA Physx Engines all the way to v.2.4.4. Just to see what happened I installed the one that came with Silverfall, it told me that there was an older version that was going to be unistalled and when it was done, nothing was different. Once again, I find this strange because my brother's AGEIA information window looks indentical to mine on his XP computer, and despite my computer being better than his, he can still run Silverfall much better than I can.

that is very weird indeed, due to the fact that me and my brother are both on vista, on almost identical specs and we run fine, im not sure if its the fact we are both on ATI raiden GCs or if we have a update/programm that you dont, im sorry that i cant help you, but it maybe worth contacting the tech team here to see if they can figure out hats going on with your machine,

but do keep trying to see whats wrong,

I just picked up Silverfall at BigLots for $6.

I have Vista Ultimate x64, Nvidia 7950GX2, 4gb RAM, and a C2D E6700.

I'll install and run the game when I get home to see if I have any issues.

Are you running any background programs like an antivir-scanner, Snake? Disable them for testing (if possible).

PlasmaSnake

Okay I got it working after messing with the graphics configuration and turning all of the graphics options to low. Although it still bugs me as my computer passes every requirement and I still have to play on low quality. But I have a feeling it's my graphics card, because after further research of my computer I found it only has 128MB of RAM, and I think that is the minimum for Silverfall.

If everyone could help with just one more thing that I don't understand. (This has happened with every game so far) When I install a game a pin it to the start menu so I can get to it a little faster. But every game seems to have problems with that. Silverfall, for example, tells me I have to run it with administrative properties, and Dawn of War tells me a file cannot be found. I can get into every game if I go through the folders or go to the AutoRun. I have tried right clicking and choosing run with administrative properties but nothing seems to be working. Does anyone know why?

@Snake:
A Geforce 7100 with 128 MB Ram is a low end GC, compare entry #3 in this thread. Try these settings when configuring Silverfall:

Main options menu

Set the resolution to the lowest value possible (this will greatly improve performance).

Multisampling 0x
Wait VSync/Windowed off
Sound HW Acc. on (if your hardware supports HWA)
Particles off

Advanced options

Disable shadows
Set all details to low (4 values)
Set all shaders to low (trees/grass low/disable), set all other options under shaders to off

Test that config out, if it works you can go into the advanced options menu again to raise a few values (e.g. setting characters to medium makes them look better without much decrease in performance).

Another problem might be the 2.5 ghz dual core CPU. I have encountered similar problems on my 2.4 ghz dc, while a 2.4 ghz single core processor can play the game without stuttering.

And if your sound hardware is an onboard chip this will be most certainly another candidate for performance issues ...

I'm not sure I understand your other problem correctly. Since most games offer the possibility to place an icon on your desktop, why don't you just use the SF/EA-icon to start the game (since you already told us that you're logging in(to windows) as admin that should start the game correctly)?!

If you want to start SF manually then open Silverfall's main folder and right-click on the Silverfall.exe. Set it to run in admin-mode, save & exit (not necessary if you're already logged in as admin; only valid for XP, Vista might be different). Then start the game by clicking on the Silverfall.exe.

General note: to avoid problems with administrative rights & games I prefer logging in as admin to modifying individual *.exe-files. At any rate change the *.exe, not just the link to the *.exe.

Well thanks for all the info on all of that. I have SilverFall running as of now.

I'm really not sure how to better explain my other problem but I cannot get into a game using the icon that is pinned in the start menu. I have to go through all of the folders and enter the game through there. Not a major problem, I just don't understand why it keeps telling me to run it with administrative properties when I am the admin and I have tried clicking the button that says, "run as administrator."

But other than that one problem it works fine now once I get into it. My graphics card was not what I expected it was, it didn't bother to tell me it only had 128MB on the box.

lmao! next time you go to buy a GC check out what it has on the reverse side or ask a member of staff to check it out at that shop.

and i never knew 7100 only had 128...... my old 6800 fx had 512 mb of RAM on it and thats an old card xD

Will do, and I didn't know that a 7100 went down that low either. I guess it was not smart to assume. My 5200 in my old computer had 128MB. I thought it would have had a little more.

Well, if you can rule out the possibility that the program is a damn little b*tch, then I'd say you're not logged in as admin ... :hitting-self:

Maybe one of the Vista users can help.

as i said abouve, im on vista and i have no problems, wether im on admin or not, i think you have problems IF you save the game to your C:\ drive, its a common problem with most games that come out now,

but still there are no problems at all on my side, im doing just fine,

although, tell me, what is your .NET framework, and maybe how many proccesses you have running in the back ground, CD drive errors, location errors ect.

the lists go on, but, to be entirely sure, you would have to be honest and tell us if it is indeed a new PC, i am sure new pcs dont come with out-dated low end GCs....

Hey Snake, why don't you simply play Silverfall on your brother's computer. ;)

PlasmaSnake
12-31-2008, 05:23 PM
I would play on my brother's computer, but the whole point of getting the game was to play together through the LAN.

And yes, it is a brand new PC. Im have no idea what a .NET framework is, I close everything out before I enter the game except Norton of course, and I don't think I have had any errors. Although I did save my game in the C:\ drive, but that's where I thought you were supposed to save games.

And after checking my graphics card again, I found that it has 128MB of dedicated RAM and 1726MB of shared RAM, so is there any reason that I still have to play on low quality graphics? I am stumped...

Ominous Gamer
12-31-2008, 05:27 PM
the shared ram is your system memory. Your video card is so ****ty it has to borrow system memory.

I would suggest looking into at least an ATI 3850. You can get those for under $70 now.

> the whole point of getting the game was to play together through the LAN

Does that mean the game is running badly while playing in the LAN?!? If yes, then this is a completely different situation! Silverfall's network code is totally frakked up, no wonder you have probs.

> I close everything out before I enter the game except Norton of course

Norton Antivirus (?) software will most certainly slow the game down. Before I play SF in the LAN I disconnect the network cable from the socket and disable any antivir software, firewalls etc.

> And after checking my graphics card again, I found that it has 128MB of dedicated RAM and 1726MB of shared RAM,

Are you playing on a notebook or is that an onboard graphic chip? I am asking because all the info about your system sounds pretty strange. Hm, why would somebody buy a "new" computer system with such an old graphic solution?

> so is there any reason that I still have to play on low quality graphics?

Easy answer:
Yes, because your GC is crap.

Advanced answer:
Nobody can really tell, because

a. you still haven't provided us with precise info about your system and
b. you are not willing to follow the tips for fine-tuning.

Since I do not want to waste any more time on this topic my last suggestion is to go to google.com to find out about "dxdiag" and similar system information tools ...

As I said, I do have it working pretty well now. I have tried everything everyone has said. And no, it does not lag over LAN, in fact I didn't try LAN play until I got it up and running in single player.

Also as I said before, the computer was bought new, but nowhere on the box did it say the amount of RAM on the video card, this is a new desktop PC and on the box and on the side of the computer, all it states is that it is a 7100. I didn't know anything went below 256MB now a days, and in fact I think it seems rather silly to do such a thing. Either way, I have tweaked all the video setting in both the graphics card and the game graphics configuration, and have it running pretty well. I am almost absolutely positive that it is indeed my graphics card. Until I get a new one I will put up with playing on slighty above low quality graphics because my computer works just fine for everything else I need it for.

I would like to thank everyone who helped and wish everyone a happy new year.

geforce 7100 is poop. not for gaming. vista tend to cause performance issue on gaming. vista is a ram hog. u have 32bit vista right? 32bit vista to be decent need atleast 3gig up+ but you have 4gig which is ok. so in your situation vista is not the cause of lagg. so what cause the lagg in your situation is your poopy 7100. get atleast x850xt.
