Hi,

In my everlasting quest of finding the best RPG, i came across Silverfall. I like the setting and it reminds me of Dungeon Siege. So i bought it via Steam.

I am however not sure if it was worth the 20 euros. While i do appreciate a good game and i am not quickly dissapointed with some or more flaws, i do have an aversion to gamebreaking mechanics.

The sum of my frustration is not only the corpseruns, but also that the enemies on normal difficulty are difficult to defeat. While i cannot say i am very far in the game, i noticed that the mobs you are fighting grow with you (auto-leveling?). i do not mind this mechanic at all, but when you are jumped by 4 or more enemies (especially ghouls), you might as wel start running. Normally i would pound then senseless, but the reason for the run is that i cannot fight them with ANY melee weapon because i keep FLINCHING. Its maddening that everytime you encounter two or more ghouls they smack you and you keep stepping dazed backward in mid-fight or weaponswing, making you very much unable to attack with quick weapons, let alone slow two-handers! I am used to bringing 20+ potions with me all the time, but these potions are out of stock very soon and i use up almost 10 when i start wandering around for 10 minutes...

Am i doing something wrong here? Is my equipment that bad early in game? Or are my skills not adaquately configured? I want this to be a good game, but for crying out loud is there a way to stop the flinching?

Here are some tips for beginners:

1) Get Morka!

Do this companion-quest immediately after the game starts and tell her to heal you during the fights. Her quest can be done within 2 mins without even fighting a single enemy. She WILL keep you alive!

2) Do Lilitip's bank safe quest next!

After this quest is done he will offer you an "assurance", so you don't lose all your stuff when dying (renew it after every death and take account of the fact that the price for the insurance is increasing every time you die).

[Note: Not possible/necessary in "Earth Awakening" on "normal" difficulty!]

3) Fight "easy" enemies + buy a lot of life potions!

Fight a few Zombies (avoid Ghouls) to level up and to find stuff. Sell (unimportant) stuff, make money. Invest money in 20-30 life potions - restart game to buy even more potions (merchants' supply of goods replenishes after every login).

Use number-"9"-key on your keyboard to take a life potion quickly (F5 or F7 for companions)!

4) Strategy is the key!

a. Invest at least 1 point into your iceball attack (freezing enemies is very handy especially during the first levels)
b. If they are too strong, you are too weak! ;) Keep running away, use ranged attacks, improve your equipment etc.
c. Find 1 or 2 companions as soon as possible (Morka is a good healer, Danselame is a good tank/fighter etc.)

5) Buy EA for an easier game start or modify SF's scripts ...

:)

Besides, Silverfall does not use an auto-levelling system (if it would you couldn't encounter +4-level-monsters), enemies have a fixed level dependent on area and difficulty setting, plus a certain chance value. When enemies are much stronger than your Avatar (i.e. more than five levels if I remember correctly) they are marked with a special color.

tbh, i dont think this game is difficult, just goto get a good weapon and armor drops really, and i will go against the abouve comment on "money (un-important)"

kinda contridictuary, in the first 40 lvls of the game i used alot of money to buy good armor and potions,

but the tactic of kill a few zombies avoid ghouls is a good stratergy, but most importantly, what are you? archer? worrior? mage? i say this because there are several tactical menovers for each class, try archers, hit and run masters, for example,

best you can do is grind up some lvls and get some good gear and find the best way to kill things YOUR way :)

>.> you edited your post.....

anyways, iv found that money is kinda useless past lvl 40-50 odd, unless your playing SF:EA then its another story.....

(just bought my copy today =D)

Well, since you did not read it, how can you tell? :P

> money is kinda useless past lvl 40-50

I wouldn't call money "useless" since I'm spending a lot of money at the talentmaster normally. Its significance decreases on very high levels (because selling rare & highly expensive equipment brings a lot of new money into your pockets :D ).

I know that I edited my post (because I inserted the part with the auto-levelling-system). Calling money "un-important" just doesn't make sense, so why should I write such a nonsense?

+ + + + + + +

Edit: ;)

Addendum @ fighter tactics for beginners

Here are a few more tips which I think are useful for level 1-10 Avatars (this is just my approach, other people might use different tactics):

1) Increase strength & hit points primarily, but do not forget agility!

STR does not need explanation since everybody starts as a fighter (also valid for low level magicians). Moreover, if you invest 4 attribute points in your "health" it will provoke a noticeable boost on every level from 1 to 10 (and don't forget: your primary aim is to stay alive). AGI is the key for a successful hit and an important attribute for a lot of stuff (not only bows etc.)

2) Freeze your enemies!

A ghoul can be a deadly threat for a level 2 Avatar, but if you freeze him you can beat him. Using the ice ball will eat up your "intelligence" and for that reason you should buy a lot of mana potions (mana and life potions are your best friends when you're under level ~10-15). Spend a few attribute points on INT, too, but don't overdo it. Forget about being a mighty & powerful magician until you are at level ~20. Use your sword instead and try not to become worm's meat.

Master-Trick: magic attacks like the ice ball cannot be interrupted when you quickly click twice with your mouse (RMK). Note also that there are ways in SF to speed up your magic attacks (e.g. special equipment), so that a frozen monster will never ever melt again, hehe.

3) How to beat monsters with arguments ...

Just kidding ... :) What you really need is a good weapon!

Note that I did not say two weapons or two-handed weapon. Here's why:

a. Two weapons: Fighting with 2 weapons gives you a speed advantage of 10% and - even more important - 8 free magical enhancement slots (EA only). But this is also the Achilles' heel, because you're still at level 2 and not at level 92. Damn. And since all of the Avatars in Silverfall don't have pockets in their armament we'll have to find something for your second hand ... this is where the shield comes in! Forget about two-weapon-fighting until you're at least at level 30 - a good shield with a high parry chance is what makes the difference between a great rockin' Avatar and a dead great rockin' Avatar! Believe ol' Brewmaster, what you really need when making your first footsteps in Silverfall is protection!

b. Two-handed weapon: advantage --> more damage than any other toothpick, disadvantage --> slow (this is why the ghouls kill you, they are faster than you and so they interrupt you)! If you can find a good two-handed-weapon with no speed penalty then this is your best weapon from levels ~8 to ~15. Later in the game you will have abilities to evade the speed penalty. Since your attack rating is not only dependent on "speed" it is essential to check the attributes menu regularly (move your mouse pointer over the values for more information).

c. One-hand weapon: this is the weapon you start with and it will be a good comrade ... for the first 5 or 7 levels. The advantage of a 1HW is that it deals good damage, it is pretty fast, and you can still hold a shield, too. You will most certainly find better swords after the first fights, so check your loot thoroughly. An alternative is a "Katar" with a lower damage value (but since it is usually faster than a sword it almost compensates this small disadvantage). If the ghouls are still interrupting you in a fight then try a Katar. Note: normally fast weapons do lower DAM and this is what makes fights longer - therefore you'll need more potions or "staying power" (-> equipment). Imho a sword is still a little more balanced and the best choice for Avatars who only just arrived in Egreïd.

General hint: use weapons with additional elemental attacks (fire, ice etc.), because the monsters around the Refugee Camp love them! :D

4) While leveling up do not forget to allocate skill points to your special abilities:

combat menu -->

melee, technique -->

melee, berserker, double attack, speed, glimpse, deadly weapons etc.

Note:

Silverfall's skills system is very interesting and flexible: later in the game you will surely go to the skillmaster and change some of your abilities (every change costs a certain amount of money, but that's no problem since you'll have enough of it). So don't worry, it's not possible to make "mistakes" with your Avatar's skills.

I am sorry for the late reply, i was on vacation and kind of forgot to say anything back.

I did try your tactics, and i appreciate everyone's input in this one! And lo and behold, it worked! ofcourse its mostly alot more handy if you have this healer at your side, which i didn't have.

Thanks again!
