Hello,

I have Silverfall installed on my Windows XP SP3 machine and find that it
takes a really long time to start. I see the splash screen and then have to
wait a very long time before anything happens. Many times I think the
game has hung. However, once the game starts, it plays fine and there are no slowdowns.

Same for me, i think it's made that way. Long load in the beginning to avoid alot of small loads ingame.

hi there

That's SFEA's "normal" behaviour ... on my notebook SF needs 90-110 secs to get into the start screen. If your machine does not need much longer, everything is fine. :D

The game loads a lot of scripts in the beginning and stuff like that (e.g. the start screen is also a "real" map).

Silverfall does take a long time to load, but with EA the load times are shorter. One of the many benefits to getting the expansion.

Startup is slow because some mastermind decided to load a whole freakin map as a main menu (along with your character+equipment).

Considering how the maps take long to open or just to fast travel (even in same area), it's obviously the map that causes the slowdown.

They probably optimized it in the expansion but I am still playing the first one.

That's complete nonsense - it is not the "main menu map" which causes SF's extremely long load time (just replace it with another map, e.g. the "Elemental Cathedral" (which loads very fast), and you'll see what I mean).

So you're saying that this game just was just poorly coded (map or no map) then?

Whatever's the case, what really pisses me off is the amount of slowdown in this game. I can play Crysis on this PC on DX10 Highest settings.. and here in silverfall, somehow the game manages to slowdown when I set the view distance to anything higher than Medium.

Forget that, the amazing part is that even on Ultra and full FOV I can't see any real difference, the enemies are also popping in the view. So there isn't really any point in playing this game on any other cam than bird's eye view.

Also, the terrible fonts (replacing fonts file only makes it worse) to abilities that keep on getting removed on closeup cam play (you move the mouse a bit and accidently end up removing them).

So yeah, who know what other problems this game has. I just hope when it comes to expansion, these problems are gone. I still enjoy the gameplay, so I hate the 'no support' policy.

Can a game which takes ages to load be well coded? A rhetorical question ...

> I just hope when it comes to expansion, these problems are gone.

[*sarcasm*]I can absolutely assure you of that - the add-on has brand-new problems.[/sarcasm] Honestly, I wouldn't put my money on it ... (nevertheless, it offers many improvements, too, and therefore I think it's well worth buying).

I think the amount of real estate both games take up is proof of lack of optimization. Just as a comparison, I have Sacred 2 which takes up to 13 gigabytes of space but the game has: multiple characters talking, a MASSIVE map covering a huge amount of space, at least three videos, and probably other things that I am forgetting at the moment. Compare that with Silverfall/EA which has 20 gigabytes required and not even the same stuff offered.

Hm, Dave? Are you sure you want to put the two words "Sacred2" and "optimization" into the same text? :p I only played the demo, but when I stepped out of the castle I encountered the first bug ... so I did not buy it (didn't like a few other things, too).

One things both games have in common are bugs. But hey, rushing to release and poor QA are common practices nowadays. :hitting-self:
