View Full Version : Will this recent surge of games save the PSP?

No doubt as many of you may have heard SCE, Ubisoft, Disney Interactive Studios and a few more have announced their 2009 plans for the PSP filled with exclusivity, bundles and new variations of the platform. Mainly composed of first party PS3 spin-offs that didn't sell particularly well to begin with, SCE seems to be trying stop those discussions of the PSP going without games. Bringing in more AAA first party titles and aiming for different demographics seems to be what everyone wanted all along but will this save the PSP in the western markets?
For those who aren't caught up on the news the following games were announced yesterday for a 2009 release.
MotorStorm: Artic Edge
LittleBIGPlanet
Rock Band: Unplugged
Assasin's Creed
Hannah Montana
Petz
Persona
Thats on top of already announced Resistance Retribution and Dissidia Final Fantasy NA/EU releases, as well as yearly staples MLB 09: The Show, Tiger Woods PGA Tour 2010 and Madden NLF 2010.
Now I am usually very pessimistic when it comes to PSP exclusives reception but if publishers keep the pressure on an triple this list in size then what is true for the PSP in Japan can be the case for the rest of the world.

With the DSi Sony needs a price cut over anything else, but games do help, especially bundles.
I can barely find a GoW bundle anymore. If Sony does slash the price, and the unit isn't gay looking, I expect to be picking up a Assasin's Creed bundle.
Motorstorm sounds nice, haven't had a good racing game on the PSP since Test Drive, which isn't saying a lot.

You know, I actually agree with that now that you bring it up. If SCE can somehow slash prices in a way that would let their bundles cost as much as the DSi's core price then there is hope that this could improve the effects of this surge tenfold but that won't be the case as the price tags of these bundles have already been set.

I think so. Motorstorm, LBP, and Assassin's Creed will be great for PSP. Hannah Montana and Petz can go to Hell for all I care.
But the DSi will hurt the PSP of course.
I still think the winner for this year will still be the DS(i). But it may be too soon to tell

I voted 'yes'
I saw the MotorStorm trailer yesterday. I can't wait for that one.
I see Ubisoft is bringing some of their acclaimed shovel-ware to PSP:rolleyes:
MotorStorm: Artic Edge - Another racing game on the PSP? We need this, and I'd buy it.
LittleBIGPlanet - The Playstation fans would love this.
Rock Band: Unplugged - Will be overrated, but possibly successful.
Assasin's Creed - Will be successful.
Hannah Montana - Eh, opens a new market to girls.
Petz - To younger children I guess, it could out-do many games on the DS. Actually this could be a good idea to those more interested in Nintendo.
Persona - What is this?
Also the PSP needs another Splinter Cell.

Shin Megami Tensei: Persona is a remake of the first game in the RPG series which recently became hit on the PS2. It was the sleeper hit of 2008.

Yes very. They seem to be a little less uptight now with all the publishing support they have. Still, I wonder how long it will last if these sales end up disappointing everyone involved. They can kill most problems with volume but giving the game replay value that makes it worth keeping can at least encourage people to buy new releases. Perhaps pull a Nintendo and keep close tabs on their shipments.
