It's random how they fight, but it's pretty cool the stuff you can get as you level up.

Go to the arena and you can challenge 6 other people on the first day, then register for the tournament to fight even more. It's just plain luck, but kind of cool.

Pugnacious is one of the best abilities you can get. Get a lance or a baton and you'll be untouchable. Too bad it's all random.
