View Full Version : Ghostbusters PC FIX !!! Worked like a charm for me !

I bought the Ghostbusters PC version. After installing the game I was disappointed because it was freezing and crashing my computer. I have an Nvidia GTX 260 core 216 and an Intel E6600 core 2 duo in my rig. This is not the top of the line hardware but it's nowhere near the bottom so I was shocked when the game crashed multiple times just 2 minutes into the game. Well thankfully a kind gentleman over in the Steam Forums made a suggestion and his idea fixed the problem that was stumping so many people including myself. His solution was to simply: 1) Start the game 2) Ctrl+Alt+Del as soon as game starts to load 3) In the Task Manager under" Applications" select Ghostbusters and change the priority to "low" OR set the game's executable priority to low by right clicking on "ghost_w32.exe" under the Processes tab. 4) Close Task Manager and bring the game back up on the screen. BAM ! Game now working and no more freezing or crashing. This simple fix will have your game running smooth as butter! I've got everything set on high in the game and the graphics are 'AMAZING"!!! I have gone from totally unplayable 30 FPS and crashing to totally playable 60 FPS smooth as butter. Hope this helps some people out there having trouble running this game. I'm not saying this will fix the problem for everyone but it sure worked for me. It also helps to have updated GPU drivers and definitely update your directX to the latest version. Right now I'm using NVIDIA 186.18 driver and the game is simply gorgeous. If you liked the movie you will love this game. I'd like to thank the person over at Steam forums. I'm just passing the information on. And by the way... just in case anyone is wondering, No you do not have to play this game through steam in order for this fix to work. Happy gaming and take care.:)

I would like to thank all other forum members and google for the knowledge needed to fix this! I have a fix to add to the list...

There is an option in the ini setting file that should be set to 0.

Open the ini file in vista the path is: C:\Users\User\AppData\Local\GHOSTBUSTERS (tm)

for xp C:\Documents and Settings\your account name\Local Settings\Application Data\GHOSTBUSTERS (tm)

Now scroll through and find backbuffer option and set it to 0, do not know why this was implemented but it could explain the looping audio and stuff.

Also for windowed mode. Open settings.ini and search for 'windowed' put an '1' behind and save. Hope it helps you.

That's enough. I will leave this thread here for others to see. All other duplicate posts will be removed. Posting the same thing again and again is spam.

How is it spam if it is in another topic I would post this to every damn post if I could but YOU wont let it be.

ok good then noone sees it and everyone loses because of you.

I mean you thanked ballzack up there and then <snip!> with me?

The first person's solution did not work for me.

I thanked ballzack before I saw that he had posted his response in several threads. I do appreciate your response, also, which is why I stickied this thread so that it can easily be seen.

I also merged your triple post and removed where you went around the swear filter. Please do not do either again.

While stickying this and merging stuff, it would have been nice to note the other people, more than the one above, like myself, who find blizzack's "solution" does not work.

Hey if Ghostbusters The Video game doesnt work for Vista, Update Direct X 10, Download the SDK software for Direct X 10 Software Development Kit, I did that and installed it then wammy!!! Ghostbusters The Video Game worked for me.. No error messages plays fine just like in XP.. I have it installed on my XP partition as well.. Hope that helps!! Also Forgot to note Move the ghost_w32.exe file to the Ghostbusters Game Directory and other files along with the ghost_w32.exe file make sure all the files are moved to the Ghostbusters Game Directory or else the game wont load.. It worked for me.. the Files are located in the C: or D:\Program Files\Atari\Ghostbusters directory and move the files to the Ghostbusters game directory and then the game should work, It worked for me :) Good Luck.. Oh then if it works, create a shortcut on the desktop from ghost_w32.exe file and place it anyware ya want and rename it to Ghostbusters The Video game, thats what I named it to you can choose any name ya want.. hehe.. ;)

Everything described in the first post did not work for me. In fact, it made my game crash even faster....

Looks like it won't work for everyone, but if people who have found a way to get the game to run will post in here, perhaps there will be an option that will work for most people.

I have had the "crash after first cinematic" problem since I bought this game and I have tried everything (including the things listed here) to fix it. Today I was on another forum and somebody mentioned a fix for a different game so I tried it on Ghostbusters and I could get past the first cinematic!!! I was actually seeing the game for the first time! I am on Windows XP so I don't know how this might work on an other OS...

The Fix: I have 4gb of ram on my system but due to the limitations of Windows XP 32bit only two are recognized unless you change your boot.ini file. If you do the boot.ini 3gb switch your system can see up to 3gb. I took off this 3gb switch and also took out 2 of my 4 gigs of ram from my system. That is what got me into the game!! Afterwards I reinstalled the extra 2gb and kept the boot.ini 3gb switch off and the game still worked!

Now I can get into the game at high resolutions but it will still crash after we go look for slimer in the firehouse...but it is a start.

lol, that sucks. That won't work on Vista, no, as it now recognizes, even in the 32 bit version, 4 GBs on systems that used to only register 3.

I believe my Direct X 10 is up to date, but I will try that, although I am not sure why that even is an issue, considering the game uses Direct X 9c and includes the latest updates to that, if you don't have it already, with the game... Anyway, I believe really, honestly, the only solution to this is going to come from Atari after they test and test and finally release a patch... It's a shame.

I am so pissed that a fix would completely work for me and not for others I think people have not tried to disable fraps mode and run windowed AND disabled back buffer, when I saw it it was set to 1 which is enabled or stands for buffering behind 1 frame. I kept having the black screen and repeating audio stream when I all the adjusting I play this perfectly no issues at all. Not one slow down or blurb good luck to others and realize that I know what I did is significant, any of you out there screwed with Nvidia's 3D settings put them back to default! I can get the error to reoccur if I screw with the 3d rendering settings, it gives me a cannot open render error, when I default it goes away again, trust me.

Removing the 3GB switch command in my "Boot.ini" file worked for me also (thanks 'jubjub64'). Doesn't really make sense, don't know why that would affect it. But the game would just lock up after the opening scene, and now I've at least made it to the hotel - so that's an improvement.

So if you have edited your boot.ini file at some point (you should know if you have), you might try that fix. Here's info on editing that file http://support.microsoft.com/kb/289022. Use caution - make a backup.

Am getting some errors that make me regret buying this game.
This game crashes all the time
Am getting really lagy play, from slow downs to skips to speed ups and to a shutter effect
my frame rates are jumping all over the place from 30fps to 9fps to 80fps
i have tried the lowest gfx setting for the gma e with the same issues
also mouse control is off for me as well skips around a lot

Well this is my system.
Intel Core 2 Duo E6850 3.0GHz Overclocked to 3.75
6 gigs of DDR2 PC6400 800MHz ram
EVGA GTX 285
2 500Gig seagate 16mb 7200rpm sata 3.0 hd in raid 0
1000 watt Ultra PSU
Vista Ultimate 64 SP2
22'' Acer monitor

it seems i was wrong!
got it to work
was crashing always at return to the sedgwick level
i have a ati hd4670 and all the levels were fine up to that level where it crashed and gave me the error to low graphic settings
this did not work!!!!!
so i thought of a drastic thing to do!
1.reinstall windows
2.installed 9.6 driver for my hd 4670.rebooted
3.turn of ccc ai catalist
4.insert ghostbusters game disk
5.installed dx update of disk
6.install game
7.start game
8. play game till the level that it crashed
9. did not crash and managed to finish the whole game
this is a long ass process but it got me to play the whole game without one crash
i think somewhere the game just dont like seeing old drivers and i had not reinstalled windows for some time
anyway it worked
loved the game so much you can tell dan and harold put a lot into this
the liitle jokes that you can tell make it the game it is
hope there will be a mods for it sometime soon
somthing like multi player but you can make up your own franchise in the game and have to capture ghosts to make it on a team leader board
plays just like a normal level but you have more ghosts and the areas change and you can name you player and mod the back pack as much or as little as you want
like the firestation just would be a bit better if you could interact with the proton pack a bit more
like custom the colour
and the stream colour
and change your face and hair/female/veikman storyline crossover
and get to drive ecto
that would be so wicked
but being a avid fan of the ghostbusters since forever
as i am 26
the game was a 9 out of ten for me a great experience
but just needs more added for that big 10
hope this helps as well

thumb rating :up::up::up::up::up::up::up::up::up:

took nearly 25 years to get the game though?

Well I finally got my game to work!
All I had to do was reinstall windows....which is kinda lame.
I'm not sure what I had on my computer that was preventing me from playing the game but a fresh reinstall got rid of it pretty quick.

I just bought this game and returned it twice, and It installs correctly. However, after I install it, it gives me no options to launch it. So basicially, the game will not launch and I have no Idea how to fix this.

I tried the original post for my issue and it got the game to about 95% playable for me. I was kind of disappointed when my brand new computer wasn't able to run this game. There is A LOT of potential for this being a bad ass game, just need to patch it up some. If it helps anyone out there, or they can help me here are my system specs. Game is still choppy and audio doesn't sync with video but it was a definite improvement.
