so Kingda AND Top Thrill Dragster are closed atm, isn't it a bit ironic. what does everyone think about them both failing hardcore. plus if fails that an error that is 2 years old on KK is still unfixed and is only getting fixed now. DISCUSS

Should be in the Amusement Park Industry forum...
And considering they're both still technically prototype coasters, there's bound to be a few bugs. It's not really that uncommon for prototype coasters to have problems.

Dragster has problems, Kingda Ka has problems.. so?

Well, considering that I live quite a ways from CP (actually, 20min from Kings Island), I wouldn't know. I borrowed my username from Harpo's Tour The Point site, where he has it as one of the Paddlewheel Excursions jokes. ;)
Son of Beast is closed long-term too, and it's not a Intamin StrataCoaster.

the reason is because KK was struck by lightning and TTD just has some sort of brake problem and should be opening monday, so is KK

These two coaster has always had problem, Kingda Ka a bit more than TTD, so it seems. It's natural.

Well, if you look at the number of sensors and moving parts on TTD and KK, I'd say that it's rather amazing they are EVER open!
The very first time I looked at the line of brakes on Xcelerator (before TTD was built), I figured such a ride would have to be a maintenance nightmare.

I wouldn't count on KK opening Monday.

Both TTD and KK are both notorious for being closed constantly, although TTD seems to be getting out of that trend. Its first few years were pretty terrible when it came to reliability, but it sorted itself out for the most part after that. KK, on the other hand, had plenty of problems when opening, except it never got better. KK is as bad now as TTD was in its opening years.

what i think should happen is they get Intamin to sort out these coasters, i mean, a breakdown rate like Stealth's is bad enough (like 4 times a day) and we don't want like a bunch of month long offtimes like kingda ka does, i mean it was struck by lightning in may and didn't open 'till june 24th

All coasters experience downtime, especially when their new. Kingda Ka is not new per say, but it's really a prototype as people brought up. And you can't say that since TTD is doing ok lately, that Kingda should too. Kingda is a bit more ambitious IMO.

How is KK more ambitious? It basically copied what already existed and made it slightly bigger?
TTD took the technology that was there, and double the size and power. THAT is ambition my friend.. a horrible idea.. but still ambition.
An analogy, which are always fun..
KK = took 350HP engine (which already exists) and added some flashy colors to make a 375HP engine
TTD = took 175HP engine, said "Add a little? F THAT!" and made a 350HP engine (the first one ever made mind you).
So there ya go. :P

I'm not just speaking of the ride itself, but think of weather conditions in New Jersey: more harsh than Ohio (I know, I've spent good amounts of time in both states) Keep in mind, TTD was already a fairly risky idea, and for Kingda Ka to even try and go higher and faster, bad idea. I'm not saying TTD is less ambitious than Kingda Ka, I'm speaking of in relation to each other...If that makes sense. :D

New Jersey does occasionally have hurricanes, and especially loads of fat people. Ohio has lake-effect weather and massive loads of fat people (hell half the people there are from Michigan, THE fattest state (let's have some cake to celebrate!!)). I'd give the edge to neither. KK is to not right as Six Flags is to craptastic maintenance.

Have you lived here or been to CP? It is on the lake? Winds? Come on now kid.
And it does make sense.. but still in relation to each other.. KK should have IMPROVED upon what TTD made mistakes doing.. now KK, which should be the new and improved version, is still failing much more then TTD has.
TTD did have quite a long teething period, but recently, I haven't been there a day when it was down.

^ I'm gonna have to go with Snoo on this one, CP weather gets a lot worse than New Jersey weather does. I probably visited GAdv close to 22 times last season, and not one day was it as windy as CP has been, a park built on a peninsula on Lake Eerie...
And KK was only built because they wanted to break the tallest and fastest records.. I don't think it was ambitious at all. If anything TTD was more ambitious than KK. KK didn't really improve upon TTD's problems because it was rushed into

I've spent a fair amount of time in New Jersey, and a LOT of time in Sandusky. I've seen some bad storms in both. I have to give the worse weather edge to Sandusky. There have been times I've been at Cedar Point where I've seriously wondered how the park managed to avoid being washed away over the past 140+ years.
As for prototypes, Xcelerator was actually the prototype. TTD built onto it, but the intention was for the concept to be proven out with Xcelerator. The added size of TTD resulted in more complications than Intamin expected.
Making something taller, or making it handle different weather conditions, doesn't necessarily make it a prototype. Making it the first of its kind makes it a prototype, and KK was definitely not the first of its kind.
If you were to use the thought that making it a bit taller or making it for different weather conditions made it a prototype, then almost every coaster ever built, with the exception of production-model coasters, would be a prototype. Then, even some production-model coasters would be prototypes, such as Cedar Point's Wildcat -- they had to make a modification to it in order to handle the weather conditions in its current location.
Using that kind of logic, almost every car that comes off an assembly line is a prototype. For most models, every combination of options and parts suppliers could result in well over 1 million different cars of the same base model. Are all of those cars prototypes? If you think KK is a prototype, then your answer to all of those cars being prototypes would have to be yes. The automakers would disagree.

They're both made by Intamin. This should be expected.

I see where your coming from, but I do take offense being referred to as a "kid". I'd love to hear how old you think I am.
I was speaking of harsher winters that NJ has from my experience living there, and from my 9-10 winter trips to Ohio (good friends) I've never been to CP, so I can't speak for that specific area, but I made some generalizations, and I expect to be somewhat wrong. But please don't attempt to insult me. Your point is made though, and I agree. You have an edge in knowledge, living in Ohio that is. :) Cheers.

^ I think it is a bit ironic that this year it seems that many of the Intamin rocket coasters have been closed for some of the year.
Kingda Ka- Struck by lightning, and has been on and off for a while, now is getting completely fixed.
Top Thrill Dragster- Brake problems and I am not sure if it is open yet.
Storm Runner- Was closed in May due to cracks in the trains.
I think there was one other rocket coaster was down for a while, I think it was Xcelerator.
However with Kingda Ka they really should have fixed it in the first place then putting a Bandaid on it and hoping it would last till the off season because now it is closed in the height of summer!

Yea, no problems this season. (though it started to act up towards the end of last winter) It was down for routine rehab during the off season. It's up and running great as usual.

I always wondered, did Xcelerator have just as many problems, as TTD had/have?
My understanding is that Xcelerator did have quite a few problems when it was new, but they were worked out and thought to be resolved before TTD was built. I seem to recall a couple of delays in the ride's opening. It is about 1/2 the height of TTD, and is significantly slower, so TTD did have quite a few issues that came about due to the added size and speed.
Unfortunately, on my last visit to Knott's, Xcelerator was down for annual maintenance.
