View Full Version : What scares you or excites you about roller coasters?

It seems to me that most people are scared of or enjoy the thrills of roller coasters. I find that I have a problem though. I was watching a show quite a few years ago, comparing the heart rates of someone who was absolutely terrified and someone who got a huge thrill out of coasters. Now don't get me wrong, I enjoy coasters, but it seems that I am neither terrified not excited by any coaster. Two weeks ago I went to Busch Gardens Europe and rode Griffin. While waiting for us to drop I was thinking about that show and I thought that if my heart rate had been recorded, I doubt there would have been much of a difference. So am I just weird or...? I have much more anticipation while visiting the dentist then I do while on a roller coaster. What exactly makes a coaster intense or terrifying for you?

I myself cannot keep my eyes open on most lift hills. They give me so much time to be scared about falling or slipping. Once the ride gets going, I don't have time to be scared. It gets me very happy.

I actually find coasters to be relaxing. I'm a rather high-stress person, and riding coasters is the only thing I've found that consistently relieves that stress.
During the time on the coaster, I'm not thinking about things like what I have to get done today, money problems, or trying to finish some project. I'm just taking in the sights and the general excitement of the ride.
With the stress draining away while on the coaster, it is actually quite common for me to feel so relaxed that I let out a big yawn at the end of the ride. No, it isn't boredom, it's just a feeling of letting the tension go.
Considering that I was terrified of coasters until I was 15, I guess it is safe to say that I have totally and completely conquered that fear!

The anticipation excites the crap out of me. When I'm going up the lift, I just get really tired for some reason lol. First drop, I feel amazing, like I'm flying or something (especially if I'm on Manta. :p). Inversions don't make me dizzy or sick, I just love them so much. The only thing that ever gets me a bit in the "ZOMFG IMA DIE!" mood is the last half of a zero g roll, when I'm thrust into the harness. Its scares me, but gets the blood pumpin', and I'm lovin' it. Rolly Coasties love me, and I loves them two. :D

I don't get scared by rides. I sometimes get pre ridal nerves. But once I am in the seat it melts.

^^ Don't worry, its prob less scarier than Top Thrill Dragster cuz Kingda Ka has overhead restraints while top thrill Dragster doesn't

Generally I'm the most nervous about a coaster on the lift hill. Once I'm over that 1st hill, I'm having the time of my life. I'm especially nervous about a coaster I've never ridden before or a coaster that I've had problems with before... generally ones that make me nauseous or hurt.

LOL, once my and my freinds all flipped off the camera at the same time on the On-Ride-Photo.
But anticipation? Probaly heights. I'm fine with lift hills, as long as the track goes up a mountain, which has only happened once. Otherwise, I don't like lift hills.

The height of the first drop used to scare the heck out of me for the longest time. Going on Time warp,Vortex and the Mighty Canadian Minebuster at Canada's Wonderland cured this.

The thing that scares me the most would be hangtime or just great heights. I have a fear of heights so yeah.

Rollercoasters don't terrify me either, but that's probably because I ride the same coasters again and again and again. The only time I've ever been terrified of coasters was when I rode my first looper in DCA when I was eight, and the time when I rode the Manhatten Express in Vegas, and that was only because unlike other rollercoasters, the restraints don't lock in until the train starts moving for some reason so if I moved a single muscle, the restraints would float back up. I messed with it a couple times and was about to tell somebody when the train started moving, then they locked. I was just inches from freaking out, especially since the coaster advertised "Negative Gs!!!"(which was highly overrated). My first coaster ever didn't scare me, BTM in Disneyland, because I was four at the time and didn't know what I was in for. So I guess I'm wierd like you and Harpo.

I am the EXACT same way. Coasters are the best combination of letting tension go and the feeling of fun and excitement.

Same here! I would HATE to get stuck on Millenium's lift hill. There are no sides to the trains, and you're just so open to everything!
That's kind of the only thing I fear on a roller coaster. Getting stuck on Magnum's hill or something I would find fun. :p

I love heights, so I wouldn't mind being stuck for a little while on a lift hill, and I'd love to be stopped at the top of Top Thrill Dragster for a few minutes.
The only thing that would bother me would be that I was wasting valuable roller coaster riding time! Or, if I had to walk off the ride, I'd be bothered by the fact that I didn't get to ride it at that time.

Except on coasterballs, they're horrible almost the entire ride through. :p

The chain lifts, when I look at the chain lifts of roller coasters it makes me want to leave the line. Once I would have if not for my friend saying it would look weird, and I should wait until we got to the station, and then just walk through. But I rode it anyway, I had a blast.

Getting stuck upside down too. I know it's really rare ad nobody died both times it's happened. But still, knowing Murphy's Law...

Fahrenheit got stuck on the vertical lift on Monday.
I usually get nervous/excited with the blood pumping when I know I'm next to ride. Then, when I sit down, I feel like I'm in heaven.
To me, riding a coaster is where I belong in life.
Oh, and nothing in the world feels better than a drop and airtime.

same here.... i could sleep on a roller coaster.. like batman at six flags over texas.... i rode that thing like twenty times in one night without getting off (a good reason to work there... it was a party for the workers) but i like the drops the most.. the higher the better

As I went to Liseberg yesterday,I rode Lisebergbanan 4 times.Everytime I feared that death trap of a lift hill to snap the train I`m on or before it.Balder`s lift hill was ridicoulusly steep,on a side note.

I would also like to add in, going up a really tall lift hill like Behemoth or Titan. I always close my eyes on the lift!
Umm, the only thing that scares me is the ride-op for Nitro at Great Adventure.

Yeah I agree. I think I'm allergic to high G-forces! Or just really intolerant of them.
Guess I'm never going to be an astronaut then.

Launches on coasters without a countdown scare the shiznits outta me, same with drop towers that give no prior warning, as a side note.
Everything else is A-Okay! :D
