Cedar Point is definitely getting something new next year.
I know that people knew about this land clearing months ago, but I thought this would be a better time to start a thread on it.

Let the guessing begin.

So consider me inappropriate... I'm asking! :D
From the hints that have been dropped, it's going to be a coaster that will roam all over the park... a foot here, a foot there, etc... could be footers.

Well, today's Facebook clue is "Gee, See Eye."
Since Prowler and Renegade are recent GCI wood coasters built at Cedar Fair parks, the clue would seem to imply that a new GCI wood coaster will be showing up on Millennium Island. Unless, of course, the clue was intentionally misleading.
rctguy123
08-07-2009, 02:08 PM
Well, I think that Harpo figured out that clue. I really hope it is a GCI woodie, I've never rode one but I've heard they're pretty nice.

Sure Gwazi is a little bumpy, but for a wooden coaster standing up to tropical storms and hurricanes, Its still mediocre.

I'm away from my copy of Queen of American Watering Places right now, but, if my memory is serving me correctly, wasn't Crystal Rock a part of the early history of Cedar Point? I seem to recall a beer garden named something like Crystal Rock Palace.

Millennium Force will be transformed (like S:ROS) and it said on the top of page that lightning strikes twice. Millennium Force is the first then.
-NGS-
08-13-2009, 12:09 PM
Or it could mean that lightning is striking twice in the form of a 2nd CF giga coaster (KD), or it could mean that the Carowinds and KD coasters are sister coasters, kind of like a new version of what SF did with the Bizarros.

Eurofighter's have a "pen-and-paper" capacity of about 1,000 riders per hour... which is around the same as Wicked Twister, which only has one train.
It's just my personal opinion, but I think they'd probably go for something that can eat more people.
AtomiCart
08-14-2009, 04:12 PM
1,000 RPH as opposed to what?
And I'd tend to agree with you. I couldn't really see CP having one built, even though it would be a lot of fun... The rides don't seem like the right scale for the park.
An Aquatrax would be amazing, but that's totally unlikely.
ytivarg
08-14-2009, 04:15 PM
An aquatrax would offer an incredibly similar experience to Maverick. Generally, CP puts in rides that offer an experience different from what's already available in the park.
MF: 1,600 RPH
Magnum: 2,000 RPH
TTD: 1,500 RPH
Maverick: 1,200 RPH
Wicked Twister: 1,000 RPH
Raptor: 1,858 RPH
Mantis: 1,800 RPH
(Numbers pulled off Wikipedia, so accuracy isn't 100%, I'm sure)

And, for comparisons sake, a few Eurofighters:
Mystery Mine: 1,000 RPH

Spongebob Rock Bottom Plunge: 750 RPH
Speed: 800 RPH

It's also possible that they're getting two attractions. ACE News "confirmed" an Intamin water ride a few years back, and now they're hinting at a coaster. Remember, 2010 is Kinzel's last year, and he says he wants to go out with a bang.

And with the economy the way it is, I highly doubt a huge coaster unless they saved a huge sum of money to buy something big/massive/unbelievable for the park yet.
Cedar Fair has just done quite a bit of debt restructuring, and sold land by Canada's Wonderland for a net of $50 million. (All sale proceeds are going towards paying down debt.)
In their recent financial conference call, Cedar Fair said that 2010 capital spending would go back to normal levels -- around $89 million. (The capital spending was lower for 2009.)
They also stated how Behemoth and Diamondback have had a significant positive impact on revenues from Canada's Wonderland and Kings Island.
Since Cedar Point only had infrastructure improvements and a new light show for 2009, it is certainly due for a new ride in 2010. Keep in mind, Kings Island, Canada's Wonderland, and Cedar Point are the 3 seasonal Cedar Fair parks that bring in over 3 million visitors per year. (Knott's also brings in over 3 million, but it is open year-round.) As one of the 3 highest-attended parks, and the only one with 4 resort hotels, it would be unwise for Cedar Fair to neglect Cedar Point.
Also, keep a couple of other factors in mind. First, there's nothing that says that coasters can't intertwine. Cedar Point has mostly avoided such a thing, but, as space becomes tighter, I think intertwining is more likely to happen. So, a new ride on Millennium Island could partially intertwine with Millennium Force. Also, it is always possible that part of the ride will be on the island and part off, as is the case with Millennium Force. (Iron Dragon and Mantis also have parts on the smaller island -- I'm old enough to remember when Western Cruise went around both of the islands, when the dock was close to the current location of the Coasters restaurant. It went in a clockwise direction around the lagoons back then.)
Oh, one other thing to remember... Dick Kinzel was already due to retire when the Paramount parks were purchased. He delayed his retirement because of the purchase.

All it said is that the new deal keeps him through 2010. It doesn't say that it is impossible for there to be another deal to keep him longer.
When I saw him on opening weekend, I have to admit that he was really starting to show his age, so I wouldn't be surprised if he is ready to retire. However, he and his family own a lot of shares of Cedar Fair limited partner units, so he might be uneasy about retiring if he feels that he needs to do more to get the company moving in the right direction.
If he decides that he wants to stay longer, it wouldn't surprise me at all if the board were to give him another extension.

There's been rumors of it's modification/removal of all sorts over the past few years. Especially back when Maverick was at the stage we are now and people were certain that was an Aquatrax.
A water themed ride was also brought up by Kinzel when maXair was introduced... citing the project was put on hold and the "pancake on a stick" was what we got instead.
I'm thinking there's going to be water involved somehow. Moreso than simply water cannons and fire hoses.

You know what I was thinking that was similar. Millennium= Millennium Flyer. Lightning= Lightning Racer. GCI not saying that there will be one but close. Oh by the way MF's are GCI's signature trains, and Millennium has to do with CP. Do any of the other manufacturers named have anything to do with CP.

Intamin water ride = another Intamin water ride/coaster?

You've got to cut back on the donuts so you can get some more air! ;) (Yeah, I'm just kidding.)
Anyone remember the TV special about Cedar Point where Kinzel was riding Millennium Force? He left a bit of a gap when pulling down the harness, saying "There's nothing wrong with a little air!" (Or words to that effect, I don't recall the exact quote.) I don't want to encourage the behavior, but leaving a bit of a gap does actually provide a bit better airtime feeling on MF.
While I do not think that MF has the best airtime in the world (or even close), I think it is better than many people realize... as a stark contrast to Magnum which has violent airtime, the airtime on MF sort of sneaks up on you due to the smooth curve of the hills. The reason it is more noticeable when leaving a bit of a lapbar gap is because you'll go over a hill, not really realize you're floating, and suddenly notice, "Gee, I'm now resting against the lapbar. I guess there is airtime here."
Anyway, like I said, I really don't want to encourage any unsafe behavior, so fasten that lapbar appropriately, even if Mr. Kinzel leaves a bit of a gap! :D
SnooSnoo

Well, if you leave a bit of a gap on any coaster, you are engaging in unsafe behavior. Now, if the gap is small enough, you're not going to be thrown out of the ride, but, on modern coasters, most of them are designed with the intent of them resting against your lap.
Some of my favorite airtime coasters include Magnum, Blue Streak (especially when it had its old lap bars -- I really miss those!), Screechin' Eagle at LeSourdsville Lake (defunct), Jack Rabbit at Kennywood (love that double-down!), Shivering Timbers (50 lashes with a wet noodle for calling it Shiver Me Timbers), The Voyage, and El Toro. There are others with excellent airtime, but those are the ones that really stood out in my mind as having memorable airtime.

Loose seatbelt? Wuss! With those old lapbars, most people I know never fastened the seatbelts! And yet, somehow, we all survived! :D With the old lapbars and without seatbelts fastened, it was almost impossible to avoid standing on Blue Streak -- ah, those were the days!
(With a 7 month old baby, my wife and I talk about how, when we were growing up, the "car seat" consisted of mom's arm! With all the regulations now in place for safety, we can't help but wonder how we ever survived! Yes, we do strap our baby in a car seat, partially because it is law, but mostly because we think it is a smart thing to do. It just amazes us how much has changed safety-wise in the past 40+ years.)

Does anyone think it'll be another Intamin? I personally hope not.. they basically have every type of Intamin it seems..

It would not surprise me if it's an Intamin.

Intamin would be interesting. Speaking of Intamin, what's Disaster Transport like? I missed it when I was there a few years ago...

What other types of Intamins are there, though? An Intamin Looper like Collosus maybe, but that would be similar to Maverick..

It sucks. Only good for air conditioning.

I doubt it will be an Intamin. I think the new coaster (If it is a coaster) will be a family ride.

Water will be involved.

^ Doesn't mean that you will get wet.
I don't think it will be a water ride.

Well, if it is a water ride, I hope it isn't one where you get soaked.

Here is an interesting, but I think already known clue. However, the picture adds some mystery.

Seems they are finally paying some attention to Frontier Trail.

Would that be a hair of the dog that bit ya?

^^ I wonder if the three Xs on the bottle mean anything.
^ I don't get the dog thing.

Dog = Snoopy?
So this new "project" is gonna be called Whyte Lightnin? How original...

Well, that was kinda my first guess, but it doesn't look anything like Snoopy.

Gotta point, maybe it has something to do with a section of the park? I've never been to CP, so really I wouldnt know...

That link that Gravity posted is probably full of clues. Like at the top where it says "lightning strikes twYce."

The dog is in the position you see people on a flying coaster, with their arms dangling. I know, very silly observation! :haha:

Guys, I hope I'm wrong with my observation:
Lightning Never Strikes Twice? What did Canada's Wonderland get? Snoopy rides. Now there is a dog on the top of the bottle. Are they hinting at a Snoopy expansion?
Again, I hope I look back at that idea and laugh, because like you guys I'm hoping for a coaster.

Sadly, that is true. Camp Snoopy isn't that popular last time I walked through it, and that cleared patch of land is right by Camp Snoopy. :(

Yeah, because that Whyte Lightning logo has anything to do with Snoopy.

Big debacle over the Carowinds name... they've got signs leading to both a "White Lightning" name and an "Intimidator" name. More leaning towards the Intimidator thing... but, I really hope we're not passing off the same name two times in a row.

Well, keep in mind that 2008 was Planet Snoopy, so I wouldn't expect a Camp Snoopy expansion this year.
If I were to take a look at the "Cedar Point Coaster Races" at Detroit's Comerica Park during the Tiger games, along with the thought of lightning striking twice (twYce?), it would be easy to get thoughts of a new racing coaster. It's not really what I'm expecting, but it would be bold, exciting, and, to a coaster enthusiast, refreshing! :D In the Cedar Point Coaster Races, there's a portion where the two tracks are racing one over the top of the other -- from the air, it could look like a Y as the tracks go from side-to-side to top-and-bottom. But, I think that's stretching it a bit, although it is a fun speculation!

Well, since Carowinds got Intimidator, that means that what we get will most likely be Whyte Lightning.
