Total Annihilation
Developer: Cavedog Entertainment Platform: PC Genre: Strategy ESRB: T (Official Site • Buy Now)

Prepare yourself for the next generation of real-time strategy gaming. Total Annihilation's technological and graphic advancements, including true 3D terrain and real-time 3D rendered units and buildings, make it the most challenging and visually stunning real-time combat game around. Large, diverse maps transport players across radically different landscapes of ice, lava, forest and more. Mega-maps as large as 64 Mb, thousands of screens wide, promise hours -- even days -- of battle. With true 3D weapon trajectories, holding "high ground" isn't just a saying, it's survival. Players can lob artillery shells over hillsides, while long-range "Big Bertha" cannons bombard the enemy from halfway across the world.

ATARI, give TA to us, ;D

Yes, yes, nowadays everyone is opensource. microsoft is opensource, ID games is, anyone is.

In the past, warzone 2100 had your sources released and quickly some heroes came and ported it to SDL.

But here we're talkin' about Total Annihilation, sure it will a bit more than port one or two things.

It could be very good for us, players, finally get ancient bugs fixed and also turn 3rd party maps, units and missions an "official" piece, based on your quality.

Even for Atari, it could be good, since own a open source developer and users community is good market, and also put Atari much closer to the end consumer.

Really, it would be nice, lots of projects around TA could be united and the Best RTS of all time would get a new breath of life , ;D

Good idea. I think they should improve off the original. Can you imagine playing these days with highspeed internet and the video cards we have now? This game got "non gamer types", like me, to actually play video games. I would spend hours upon hours at my buddies work, after hours, playing a kick butt LAN game and eating pizza into the wee hours of the night...

I miss those days. However, I bought a new copy (eBay) because my original was so scratched. Question, if I hosted a game regularly, would people join? Meaning, is it worth my effort? I tested it in a virtual machine on windows 2000 and it kicks butt and is fast.

Bring TA back!!!

i wrote in atari tech support , and they say:

"This is due to Atari, Inc. no longer owning the License for this franchise. We are truly sorry for any inconvenience this might be causing you to enjoy your game."

what does it mean? who have source code now? )

The TA source code is not needed anymore, because diehard TA fans already recoded the whole engine, from scratch, and made it open source. Also removing bugs, adding a shiny 3D engine, better multiplayer support, and making it even more moddable: http://spring.clan-sy.com

Maybe two or three vids while help you realise what I'm talking about:
http://youtube.com/watch?v=MpKqQxTURik
http://youtube.com/watch?v=VW1YLs7mLfc
http://youtube.com/watch?v=5y5IMq6u4hc

So why would you need TA source code when you have an engine that can do all that TA can do, and way more, with source already freely available?

hello zw,

this is not a technical issue,

Since the ownership over code, videos, sound effects, textures and so on still closed amazing projects like Spring always will have legal phantoms around.

I don't like, for example, the point when no "linux/free-as-in-freedom games list" put spring in some position. Because at any moment a company (since Atari says that doesn't have the TA ownership) can use your powers and do with spring what someone made with the lame mp3 encoder/decoder.

Today is good for the company image show that they aren't hiding something for the general public, so, open to the general public and do some support for the community around it could be a good thing to both parts. That's why i think that Total Annihilation should be released under GPL or something like.

I think ATARI should sell TA Commander Packs with all three game CD's and Strategy book. Put it on the store shelves next to Starcraft Battlechest. People will start playing it who never seen it before. Starcraft vs. TA fights would also resume.

The idiots wasting time reverse engineering TA should focus on polishing up their Spring crap and selling the idea as TA2 to ATARI. Otherwise, what really is their point in freeware besides making TA look like a joke to newcomers.

I'm almost always in the Rollercoaster Tycoon forums, but I've played TA two and i'm a huge fan!

Anyway, Atari should be notified of the game's huge cult fan base one way or another, and then they might (just might) consider making a new one. Imagine TA with good graphics!

Total Annihilation is the best RTS game that Atari won't sell. It isn't helping things that Infogrames is swallowing Atari whole at the moment. Blizzard is the best company when it comes to selling RTS games.

This topic may possibly get more attention elsewhere. I have not seen an Atari employee in here for a long time.

Looks as if Atari does know they own the game: http://www.atari.com/us/games/total_annihilation/pc

Quote:
This PC digital download includes the original release Total Annihilation, Total Annihilation: The Core Contingency expansion pack, Total Annihilation: Battle Tactics expansion pack and Total Annihilation 3.1c patch. Critically-acclaimed, Total Annihilation is the first real-time strategy game to feature 3D units and terrain.

Um. There is no TA2.

But did you try their (Infogrames) online buy link? Comes with all three games for $9.99.

Good. Because it's a national treasure and should not be messed with by kids.
