TDU/8800 stuttering issue solved.
For the past few weeks I've been scouring these boards, among others, looking for a solution to the infamous TDU stuttering issue. While there's no shortage of discussions on the topic, I hadn't much luck in finding something that worked. Like many others, I'm using an 8800 series GPU. This seems to be the common thread among those unable to run the game. There is also much mention of the problem possibly stemming from the use of an AMD CPU and/or a G25 wheel. I have all the above.
After much searching I found the answer when I stumbled across a beta version of the nvidia driver, version 177.70. Once I installed this, the game ran beautifully. The look and performance of the game improved even more when I switched AA control over to the nvidia control panel and set it at 4X with supersampling enabled. Since I was seeing some tearing when using a trackir, I enabled vsync as well and that cleared it right up. I've yet to experiment with other settings or even measure frame rates. Frankly I've been too busy playing the game to do so. All I know is that it works and it looks great, finally. I think this driver version is not even an official release yet and I'm sorry to say I don't remember where I got it, but it shouldn't be too hard to find. Prior to this I had tried every suggestion I came across, and a few of my own but had seen no improvement at all. The stuttering was bad enough to make the game utterly unplayable, not to mention headache-inducing. Now however, it is silky smooth at 1440X900 even in the heavily populated areas. Of course all the usual caveats apply. This solution worked brilliantly for me. It may not work for you but I do wish you luck and I hope this helps. No, no mistake. I double-checked and it is 177.70. I also dug around and found a link:
http://www.driverheaven.net/windows-...-download.html You are right in that nvidia is now listing a higher version number as a beta. I hadn't noticed that. For now I think I'll stick with 177.70. I'm too scared to start messing with it again now that it's working. Also I forgot to mention that I'm running XP. |

177.79 whql candidate is giving me more or less the same performance as the other 177.xx drivers -- For 177.79, DV is now working with vista/sli configurations and control panel performance is noticeably faster.
