Icon6 I can't play (ATARI 80 Classic Games in One), need help!

Greetings everyone..!

Well, let me get to the point, I join to chat with new people, but mostly to find out if anyone hear has purchased (ATARI 80 Classic Games in One), installed it on Windows Vista, and had trouble accessing the games on the menu screen. "This is what I'm getting," a black screen with a error message: (Not Responding...Menu exe. failed), does anyone have an idea for solving this problem?

Welcome to Ataricommunity

I have that game on PC, but running on Windows XP, though.
I do get a problem where I click on certain games, but it doesn't run. Shows a black screen only. I click the 'Esc' key and that takes me back to the menu screen. I click the game again and it works fine then.

Have you tried what I've done? If clicking the 'Esc' key and retrying the game doesn't work, then I'm sorry, I can't help you.

Does it support Vista?

Have you tried running in XP compatibility mode?

Have you tried running as administrator?

I found a way to play the (ATARI 80 Classic Games in One)…arcade versions and half the 2600 home games, I had to uninstall the CD ROM, then I had to reinstalled it to run in windows 98 as administrator. Neither Windows 2000 nor the XP service pack-2 would work on the (Game Menu exe.); I think it’s those damn “Vista registry keys!”

Vista sucks, my Picture-It program doesn't work like it use to, it's a Vista registry key issue, with it too!

I am sort of in the same boat. I do get the menus and everything fine, but no matter what game I pick I get <game name>.exe has stopped working.

I am running Vista Ultimate 64. Is there anyone else with this OS that has gotten theirs working?

I came here hoping to fix this very problem. My disc worked perfectly on ME but I got a new computer with Vista and it crashes before I can do anything. I was hoping for a patch or something but it seems that Atari has disavowed any knowledge of their old product on the official site. If anyone comes up with something I'm anxious to keep up my Atariing on the new system.

partial solution to 80-in-1 on Vista

I have had some success by directly executing the games individually, e.g. by double-clicking on C:\Program Files (x86)\Atari\The 80 Classic Games\Asteroids.exe. That works OK, where starting it from the Atari menu program results in a black screen. (Creating an equivalent short cut works too, of course.)

Executing them directly is what I really want, so that I can tie them into my overall "games" menu tree, but it doesn't let you get to the setttings for the game. You *can* use the Atari menu to change the settings, then bail out and run the program directly. Ugh. That's why I say it's a partial solution.

I haven't experimented with the 2600 games.

Ok...so I'm the OPPOSITE of a computer "nerd" (a computer moron, maybe?). How the heck does one make it "run in windows 98 as administrator"? We just bought a new computer and REALLY want this game to run but have NO CLUE what to do.

Stupid Vista.

"ATARI was bought by Microsoft and most of the classic ATARI games won't run well on the VISTA OS., because they weren't desing to do so in the beginning."

How to run...well at leat the arcade games and some of the 2600 home system games: click right on the Atari game menu icon, then click (run as Windows 98, then click apply, exit, click the on Atari icon again, then right click, click (run as administrator) that should do it.

Where'd that come from?

Doesn't sound like a joke to me. Atari (name/properties) is owned by Infogrames. Microsoft never had anything to do with Atari/Infogrames, ever.

Like Duke Nukem 3D. It's working.

Getting the arcade titles to work in Vista wasn't too difficult as you can execute them directly. It seems like launching titles out of the menu screen is the problem. Bad thing is, I can't figure out how to launch the 2600 titles from outside of the menu. They have a 2600 icon, but when you try to launch it in compatability mode with 98/ME or 2000 (or XP), it says that a game has not been selected.

I've poked around in the game files and it looks like the 2600 program is just a customized rom player. The roms are stored in the 2600 program. What we have to figure out is how to get the 2600 program to load with one of those roms. Any ideas for those with this disk and Vista?

Hmm, still having little luck loading the 2600 program without using the menu. I think it should be able to load with a command entry involving the name of the rom, but its beyond me. Anyone else have any better luck?

bump

What are you smoking? According to Wikipedia and other sources, Atari was NEVER owned or even had a relationship with Microsoft. The only thing Atari/Info did was release games on Xbox and Windows

That's it!

And triple posting won't give you a good rep here

I recently bought this title and I had problems running it under Windows XP. I found the following workarounds. [Edit: I just noticed that these workarounds are described in a blog referred to in an earlier post.]

As suggested earlier, you can execute the arcade titles directly (e.g., by navigating to Games folder and double clicking on Pong.exe).

For the 2600 titles, you can navigate to Games\Resources\Atari 2600\ROMs\. There, you can right-click on a binary file (e.g., skydiver.bin), and choose "Open With". Choose "Select the program from a list". Select 2600. The first time you do this, 2600 won't be in the list, so you'll have to use "Browse...", then go to Games folder on the disc and choose 2600.exe. To make this process faster, you can create shortcuts to the binaries of the games you like and do the "Open With" step with the shortcut.

To be safe, I did NOT check off "Always use the selected program to open this kind of file" because there may be binary files that are unrelated to the Atari 2600.

Patch available for Atari 80 Classics in One

Hi, I've only just found this thread, so I apologise for the late follow-up, but thought I should let people know a patch existed for this problem. It was on developer Digital Eclipse's site until the site ceased to be. I now have a copy of the patch on my site. You can get it here: http://www.vavasour.ca/jeff/games.html#atari80
