The Negadon Monster from Mars Movie Discussion Thread

Well some of you may be going to either the Godzilla festival going on starting yesterday in California or heading to G-Fest in Chicago on next week.

In this thread post your impressions and lets discuss what your viewing of Negadon Monster from Mars was like.

Discuss what you like most about it, and what you thought would have been the downside of it.

There are some sources for purchasing the film like Deep Discount DVD, Movies Unlimited and Suncoast. I have pre-ordered mine tonight. The DVD releases on July 11th.

EDIT: Though I didn't include a poll with this thread, do give it a rating on a scale of 1 to 5. With 5 being "A Great film".

EXAMPLE
  1. The film is not very good
  2. The film is okay, but needed more work
  3. The film is average
  4. The film is pretty good.
  5. GREAT MOVIE

This thread is bumped for the returning G-Fest attendees to add their input regarding this film.

Of course the film is released today, July 11th in mass retail.

We appreciate the feedback of the members.

Welcome back!!!

As Chris said, the CG humans are a little off. The film was slow paced at first but picked up at the end with a descent battle scene (which was too short IMHO). I would have to say that the film was okay, but needed a little work. If the pace that was set at the end had been maintained throughout, it would have been easier to watch. Perhaps if actual human actors were used in conjunction with the CGI, it would have been better. When I go to see a kaiju movie, I want to see more action and longer battle scenes. Gamera fit the bill but unfortunately, Negadon did not.

I wouldn't say that the movie is bad because there were some bright spots and the movie did have potential. Perhaps the sequel will tap into that potential and possibly carry kaiju movies in a new direction.

On a side note, I wonder why was it so short a film. I mean, if they want to do something in the spirit of the Showa early era kaiju films, why try to cram it in just a little over 20 minutes?

I read some negative reaction to the movie at Tokyo Monsters where I registered recently. There are several people with the same feeling. The film released yesterday. Ooops, I hope Central Park Media doesn't get too discouraged if the sales aren't good. I like the CGI approach.

Gamera has a WAY bigger budget. Can't really compare Negadon to Godzilla or Gamera. It does deserve every award it gets, I'll say that

While Gamera and Godzilla do have bigger budgets, the fight scenes could have been lengthened without incurring a tremendous cost, especially if some of the slow tempo scenes were deleted. After seeing Negadon, I spoke with Yoshikazu Ishii, spfx director for GFW. When I posed my question about CGI vs props, I was told that CGI is LESS expensive to produce in a movie than the use of props. All I ask is that they show less raindrops and more battle scenes. If they had done that, I would have given 2 thumbs up instead of 1 thumb .

I just watched the DVD. It was pretty good. My only question is if it's 2025, why do they still use Zero jets, normal Toho tanks, and rocket launchers? That was a bit odd.

It was rather short, and ended way before I thought it should. The back of the DVD said 70 minutes (must include the Previews of the DVDs/Manga they are trying to peddle.)

I give it a 2 ( ) out of 5 . The CGI was good looking (but no where near Final Fantasy Advent Children), the story was interesting, but the fight should have been way longer. Was Negadon like a total wimp, cause it did not put up much of a fight. When I first saw it, I thought maybe that it could be a possible Godzilla opponent. Then I watched the rest, and said, nope Godzilla would beat it in 2 seconds flat.

I would like a sequel, that is at least twice as long.

Okay, well one thing I think needs to be mentioned here is that this is a Short Film -- as in the genre "Short Film." It wasn't designed to be full-length. In fact, the movie wouldn't work full-length in my opinion because of the way that Awazu presented his story. Plus for only having a total of 8-10 people working on the project would really mess things around if it was full-length. As near as I can tell, funding for this movie came straight out of Awazu's wallet.

The movie really worked well in my opinion. The battle was interesting, but the main thing going for it was that, in the spirit of a good number of kaiju films, the fight is not what drives the movie, it's the human condition.

The pacing hurts a bit because of the lentgh -- "No, Miroku can't be used as a weapon, or even touched by humans ever again. What, a giant monster? Okay, I'll go get Miroku!" In reality though, there's no real way to fix that, because the movie was designed to run at that length and tampering with the flow to extend the movie would have hurt it more.

A well-done short film all in all, it does what it sets out to do. 4 on a scale of 5.

Well I am getting interesting arguments for and against the film. This is good in the way the thoughts are presented. My interest is perked enough to just get this and see for myself.

When I was getting ready to see the movie, my expectation was that (since the movie was short) it would be packed with action. Not to belabor the point but I was disappointed. However, I would still recommend at least seeing it so that you can form your own opinion. Depending on the price tag, I might rent it instead of buying it(if it becomes available for rent, that is).

@ Anyone who would like to respond
Regarding Military Resistance

Just how much military resistance was there in the film? Was it the defense force battalion or is it primarily linked to the "mech robot"?

Since there is no organized military attack, the robot does the work.
